Book excerpt: In one high school, an advisory program was put into place to promote students' sense of belonging as a main goal. However, the effectiveness of this program had not been evaluated, and research was needed for a better understanding of program outcomes. The purpose of this mixed methods case study was to evaluate one high school advisory program with a special focus on the program's effect on the students' sense of belonging. Tinto's model of student retention provided the theoretical foundation for this study. The research questions focused on perceptions of the process and outcomes of the advisory program from the perspectives of 9th and 10th grade advisees, 12th grade assistant advisors, and teacher-advisors. Two hundred fourteen 9th and 10th grade advisees, 41 12th grade assistant advisors, and 14 teacher advisors completed surveys. Responses to the qualitative open-ended questions on the survey were analyzed using typological analysis, including both predetermined and inductive categories. Findings indicated that the advisees benefited from the interaction with advisors, wanted more time for advisory, and were concerned about academics. Assistant advisors requested larger roles in the program. Advisors felt that the advisees benefited from the interaction of being part of a group and recommended that the curriculum needed continuous improvement. Responses to the quantitative Likert style questions on the survey rating program goals were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results indicated that advisees agreed that all goals were being met. Recommendations include giving the 12th grade assistant advisors larger roles, providing more frequent or longer advisory meetings, and engagement in continuous revision of the curriculum. Social change implications are effective advisory programs may lead to better overall success in high school, thus decreasing dropout rates.

The research findings indicated there is variability among the advisory structures, role of school counselors, and professional development training and resources of advisory programs in secondary schools as largely influenced by the bureaucracy of school systems. Advisory programs have produced both positive and negative outcomes for school communities in fostering the social emotional development of adolescents, building staff/student relationships/connections, and developing a positive school culture and climate. This research study suggests secondary schools model advisory organizational structures based on the social emotional learning framework to produce more positive academic and social emotional outcomes for adolescents and school communities in shaping a positive school climate.

The findings of this study recommend that though students and teachers feel they have enough time to work in advisory, they still do not feel that they are making the connections that are the primary goal of the advisory program. They feel the need for more focus on post-secondary preparation in advisory as well. This study will delve deeper into these questions and attempt to create a plan to help create an advisory that will be beneficial to all involved.

Book excerpt: This study examines the influences on and outcomes of relationships between approximately 600 grade 10 and 11 students and 55 faculty members in an advisory program at a medium-sized high school in suburban New England. Using embedded mixed methods, surveys containing closed-ended and open-ended questions were administered to students and faculty to examine advisory typology characteristics as well as the level and type of social support received by students through the advisory program. Analysis of the quantitative findings indicated students received social support from both faculty advisors and advisory classmates. Emotional support was perceived most often from both faculty advisor and student advisee perspectives. A variety of advisory typology characteristics were reported in each advisory groups. Characteristics associated with skill and advocacy typologies were most prevalent. Statistically significant correlations were found between advisory typologies and social support constructs. Advisory typology characteristics were found to predict certain social supports with statistical significance in multiple regression analyses. Confounding variables identified through qualitative analyses such as program logistics and group dynamics should be examined in future research. The findings can be used to inform the development of innovative advisory programs that provide specific social support to students through the cultivation of positive student-teacher and student-student relationships.

Book excerpt: The roles and responsibilities of school counselors across the United States are often misinterpreted amongst various stakeholders, individual state requirements for educational initiatives, and often among practicing counselors' own perceptions and view of professional identity. While the American School Counselor Association (ASCA, 2003; 2005) strives to provide ethical standards and practices to solidify the professional identity of school counselors and acquire the qualifications and skills to address all students' academic, personal/social and career development needs, a clear defined definition and perception of the school counselor continues to become solidified. Perhaps this is due to the changing educational horizon, communities, administration, and federal influences of policies and procedures on schools and school districts (Bain, 2012). Whatever the reason, school counselors are faced with a myriad of challenges that make it difficult in today's educational society to adhere to the social/emotional, post-secondary/career, and academic needs of all students. The American School Counselor Association (ASCA, 2003;2005) has developed the ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs which establishes a structure for effective school counseling programs; however, school counseling programs, credentials, and educational initiatives can be different from state to state. This study examined high school counselors (9th-12th grade) in Pennsylvania, suburban, public high Schools, specifically in Bucks and Montgomery Counties. A quasi-mixed methods, exploratory research approach was used. Nonparametric statistics were run to determine if a significant impact of demographic variables yielded a difference in school counselors' self-efficacy. Additionally, school counselors were randomly selected to participate in semi-structured, open-ended interviews, examining high school counselors' perceptions and self-efficacy regarding their roles and responsibilities pertaining to students' mental health issues. Results indicated that gender, one's undergraduate degree of education, and years of experience have significant impact on school counselors' self-efficacy, specifically related to certain items on the Counselor Activity Self-Efficacy Scales (Lent, et al., 2003). After content analysis coding, it was also found that school counselors feel high efficacy beliefs associated with specific roles and responsibilities and that self-efficacy beliefs change if counselors perceive a lack of stakeholder support or do not feel they are valued. Some implications for future research might be a longitudinal study of school counselors' self-efficacy over a given period of time and a larger sample size. It might also be helpful to combine elements of the CASES Scales with other school counselor based scales to form a more unified measurement that speaks to school counselors' roles and responsibilities that have been identified within this study and expand to specific mental health diagnosis, disorders, and behaviors. I examine, in rich detail, a suburban high school which implemented Rachel's Challenge and the research thoroughly formulates a description of the school prior to the implementation of the program and following the implementation of the program to determine the impact of the character education initiative on the school's culture, the resilience development of the school community members, and the sense of community within the institution. I collected the data in a suburban high school located in a Mid-Atlantic state. Limiting my study to one school provided me the necessary and advantageous opportunity to gain a rich description of the possible impacts of the program while also allowing me to deeply immerse myself into the realities of the participants. In-depth interviews were carried out with students, parents, counselors, administrators, and teachers to gain a rich understanding of any need for and value of the program and of any impacts of the program on the school's culture, the development of resilience, and a sense of connection and community. Constructs of Turbulence Theory are used to dissect the value of the character education program; I examined what need induced the implementation of the program in the school community and any positive impacts of the program on the school culture, resilience development, and sense of connection and community. Constructs of Resilience Theory are used, as it has been applied to individuals and organizations, to analyze the possible impact of the character education program on the resilience levels within the school community. Interviews were carried out with the various key-players within the high school who offered a wide interpretation of the effects of the character education program on the overall school culture and the level of resilience within the school community. A thorough document review was also carried out to further explore any impacts of the program on school culture, resilience development, and sense of community to clarify and further add to the interviews. The data provide educational leaders with a practical understanding of the impact of character education, namely the Rachel's Challenge program, on school culture and the development of resilience within a school community to help leaders formulate a value of its implementation in their schools. The research provides evidence that the Rachel's Challenge program did improve school culture in this particular school by encouraging a community built on acceptance, inclusion, kindness, respect, and compassion. The program encouraged pro-social behavioral changes within the school as well as promoted an anti-bullying message to the members of the school community. The research also provides evidence that the Rachel's Challenge program did promote the development of individual and community resilience at this particular school as demonstrated by an enhanced ability to stand up against peer pressure as well as the promotion of strength in the face of adversity and a sense of connection and unity within the school community.
