Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new commentary for today's world, The Story of God Bible Commentary explains and illuminates each passage of Scripture in light of the Bible's grand story. The first commentary series to do so, SGBC offers a clear and compelling exposition of biblical texts, guiding everyday readers in how to creatively and faithfully live out the Bible in their own contexts. Its story-centric approach is ideal for pastors, students, Sunday school teachers, and laypeople alike. Each volume employs three main, easy-to-use sections designed to help readers live out God's story: LISTEN to the Story: Includes complete NIV text with references to other texts at work in each passage, encouraging the reader to hear it within the Bible's grand story. EXPLAIN the Story: Explores and illuminates each text as embedded in its canonical and historical setting. LIVE the Story: Reflects on how each text can be lived today and includes contemporary stories and illustrations to aid preachers, teachers, and students. — Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs— Commentators have derived a range of interpretations of the book of Ecclesiastes. For some, it's wholly in keeping with traditional biblical wisdom, while for others it is a radically unorthodox manifesto. Song of Songs has likewise been subject to a number of interpretations and challenges. Is it an allegory for God's love for his people, or is its intent plainer—an exposition of human love and sexuality? Edited by Scot McKnight and Tremper Longman III, and written by a number of top-notch theologians, The Story of God Bible Commentary series will bring relevant, balanced, and clear-minded theological insight to any biblical education or ministry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kay Arthur, whose books in the New Inductive Study Series have sold more than 1.4 million copies, joins Pete De Lacy in this look at three short, not-to-be-missed gems of the Old Testament: Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, and Lamentations. By learning and practicing the techniques of observation, interpretation, and application, readers will discover for themselves the signs of divine inspiration in these unique books and understand how to walk with God in every season. Digging into Ecclesiastes, readers will wrestle with life’s apparent inconsistencies and futility and find clear pointers to the ultimate meaning of life. Exploring the Song of Solomon, they will determine whether the message pertains mainly to the physical and emotional bonds of marriage, to Israel’s relationship to God, to the church’s relationship to Jesus, or to the individual believer’s relationship to Christ. In Lamentations, readers will see the avoidable tragedies caused by sin and the never-ending covenant love of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NIV Application Commentary Ecclesiastes/Song of Songs. Ecclesiastes and Song of Songs have always presented particular challenges to their readers, especially if those readers are seeking to understand them as part of Christian Scripture. Ecclesiastes regularly challenges the reader as to grammar and syntax. The interpretation even of words which occur frequently in the book is often unclear and a matter of dispute, partly because there is frequent word-play in the course of the argument. The argument is itself complex and sometimes puzzling and has often provoked the charge of inconsistency or outright self-contradiction. When considered in the larger context of the OT, Ecclesiastes stands out as an unusual book, whose connection with the main stream of biblical tradition seems tenuous. We find ourselves apparently reading about the meaninglessness of life and the certainty of death in a universe in which God is certainly present but is distant and somewhat uninvolved. When considered in the context of the NT, the dissonance between Ecclesiastes and its scriptural context seems even greater; for if there is one thing that we do not find in this book, it is the joy of resurrection. Perhaps this is one reason why Ecclesiastes is seldom read or preached on in modern churches. The Song of Songs (also known as the Song of Solomon) has been read, historically, by Christians, in two primary ways---as a text which concerns the love and sexual intimacy of human beings and as a text which uses the language of human love and intimacy to speak of something else---the relationship between Christ and the church. Christians have often felt that they must choose between these options---that a text about human love and sexual intimacy could not be at the same time a spiritual text. It is one of the challenges of reading the Song to explore how far this is necessarily true and how far Christian readers have been influenced in their reading more by Platonism and Gnosticism than by biblical thinking about the nature of the human being and of human sexuality. Another challenge is to discover whether the Song is really one 'song' at all, or simply a haphazard collection of shorter poems cast together because of their common theme of love; and still another is to gain clarity on what, precisely, is the connection between the Song and Solomon. This commentary sets out to wrestle honestly with all the challenges of reading these biblical books---the challenges of reading the texts in themselves, and the challenges of reading them as intrinsic parts of Christian Scripture. Using the standard structure of the NIVAC series, it explores their 'original meaning, ' the 'bridging contexts' that enable their journey to the present, and their 'contemporary significance.' In the course of the exploration, these books are seen to be deeply relevant in what they have to say both to the contemporary church and the contemporary culture.
