August 2004) was not a theologian but an industrialist. Within the framework of his commitment to the Fellowship of Reconciliation, he also lectured on theological topics. He is mainly known for his contribution to the humanization of work but he was much concerned with philosophical and religious issues. He was very much influenced by the teachings of the bible scholar and Messianist Hugh J. Schonfield and convinced that a Servant Nation was the only way to solve the fundamental problems of mankind. He not only founded the leading flexible working hours and security equipment company, Interflex, but also was instrumental in innovative social projects. An unbelievable entrepreneur (most of his initiatives are still operating today), he was a gentle approachable person and father of four children. This book is a collection of his essays on a variety of subjects from his theological, political and economics perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic justice is the core of the biblical tradition. In this innovative volume, Horsley takes the reader deep in examining how Jesus' economic project was shaped in opposition to the Roman imperial order and how Paul's development of communities around the Mediterranean was part of creating an alternative society among those subject to Rome. This analysis sets in the foreground the fundamental issues of food security, access to resources, and liberation. These movements emerged in opposition to Roman violence, political oppression, and economic extraction. This ultimately leads the author to consider how these issues are more relevant than ever in confronting the most recent form of empire in global capitalism. While we are not living in a Roman imperial world, we must strategize to confront the ways in which the new empire uses violence, oppression, and extraction to the detriment of the vast majority in the world, but especially those who are most vulnerable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his revolutionary book, Neither Sword nor Scepter, Wilhelm Haller (1935-2004) discusses justice in our economic system and in our society. In doing so, he brings into play quite original approaches to solutions based on an almost completely forgotten idea. Known as the inventor of flexitime and as the author of several books and numerous articles on management, economics and theological topics, he saw himself as a student of Martin Büber and Hugh J. Schonfield. But he also speaks from a rich life experience as entrepreneur and founder of several social projects. This book has hitherto only been published in German. This English interpretation now makes it available to a wider range of readers. Although written in the 1990s, its message is just as relevant and pertinent today. It is of interest not only to the manager and business leader but also to politicians and all those who have an interest in the why’s and wherefore’s of our society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Jesus and the Politics of Mammon, Phelps uses contemporary critical theory, continental philosophy, and theology to develop a radical reading of Jesus. Phelps argues that theological traditions have on the whole blunted Jesus' teachings, particularly in regard to money and related concerns of political economy. Focusing on the distinction between God and Mammon, Phelps suggests instead that Jesus' teachings result in a politics that is anti-money, anti-work, and anti-family. Although Jesus does not provide a specific program for this politics, his teachings incite readers to think otherwise with respect to these institutions.

Book excerpt: This collection of all new essays by leading historians offers a close look at the connections between American Protestants and money in the Antebellum period. During the first decades of the new American nation, money was everywhere on the minds of church leaders and many of their followers. Economic questions figured regularly in preaching and pamphleteering, and they contributed greatly to perceptions of morality both public and private. In fact, money was always a religious question. For this reason, argue the authors of these essays, it is impossible to understand broader cultural developments of the period--including political developments--without considering religion and economics together. In God and Mammon, several essays examine the ways in which the churches raised money after the end of establishment put a stop to state funding, such as the collection of pew rents, lotteries, and free-will offerings, which only came later and at first were used only for benevolent purposes. Other essays look at the role of money and markets in the rise of Christian voluntary societies. Still others examine the inter-denominational strife, documenting frequent accusations that theological error led to the misuse of money and the arrogance of wealth. Taken together, the essays provide essential background to an issue that continues to loom large and generate controversy in the Protestant community in America.

Written by scholars from within and outside of Yoder's own Mennonite community, these essays engage the most significant aspects of Yoder's thought -- from his landmark analysis of the politics of Jesus to his defense of Christian pacifism. A fitting tribute to Yoder's work, this book will be useful to readers from a wide range of disciplines.

Book excerpt: Printed in Partnership with The Center and Library for the Bible and Social Justice Can an economic system receive a response informed by biblical and theological ethics? This collection of five essays, first published in 1991, provides a solid yes to the way ""prophetic criticism,"" rooted in the Hebrew tradition of social justice, can assess the state of today's market economy. In strong contrast to the conservative and Religious Right orientations of the 1980s, the writers of this book ""crack the hegemony of neoconservatives in theology."" They also provide strong arguments for what H. Richard Niebuhr called a transformational ethic. Norman Gottwald discusses the rise of the Hebrew prophets and their call for economic justice. William Tabb evaluates contemporary political economies in light of the prophetic tradition. Beverly Harrison develops a prophetic approach to current socio-economic troubles of the middle class. Gregory Baum reviews Catholic perspectives on international economic arrangements and trends. And finally, Dorothee Soelle describes the economic and political implications of the Hebrew concepts of the Sabbath and the Year of the Jubilee. ""I welcome the reissue of this theological critique, written during the first flush of post-Cold War capitalist triumphalism in the early 1990s. These essays remain relevant for a new generation of faith communities awakening to the challenge of social and economic justice."" --Ched Myers, Activist Theologian ""Justice is at the heart of theological ethics and it can only be measured by the yardstick of the poor, these essays insist. Long after the historical situation described in these essays has changed, this prophetic perspective will endure."" --J. Mark Thomas, from the Introduction Vernon Visick was a campus minister at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Director of New College-Madison, ""an experiment in prophetic inquiry."" He holds a PhD in Ethics and Society from the University of Chicago, with a special interest in the ethics of the research university. J. Mark Thomas taught sociology, ethics, and leadership at Madison College and was chair of the sociology department. He holds a PhD in Ethics and Society from the University of Chicago and has written widely in the areas of ethics and technology, including the book Ethics and Technoculture. Both editors helped found the Agenda for a Prophetic Faith lecture series of Madison, Wisconsin, one of the longest-running lecture series on religion and politics in the United States. The chapters in this book were originally given as lectures in this series in 1987.
