To place the building in a condition to be occupied, and to give the requisite fire-proof accommodation and an auditorium; at least more is needed. Neither the Council nor the Building Committee can be expected to importune the public for this sum. It should be furnished by voluntary subscriptions, and, as the subscriptions already made have come from less than one-half of the members, it is earnestly hoped that all interested will now render what assistance may be convenient to them. For the first time, knowledge of the classics extended beyond aristocratic males to the middle class, women, African Americans, and frontier settlers, but the Civil War led to a radical alteration of the educational system that steadily eroded their preeminence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonel Moses Hazen’s 2nd Canadian Regiment was one of the first “national” regiments in the American army. Created by the Continental Congress, it drew members from Canada, eleven states, and foreign forces. “Congress’s Own” was among the most culturally, ethnically, and regionally diverse of the Continental Army’s regiments—a distinction that makes it an apt reflection of the union that was struggling to create a nation. The 2nd Canadian, like the larger army, represented and pushed the transition from a colonial, continental alliance to a national association. The problems the regiment raised and encountered underscored the complications of managing a confederation of states and troops. In this enterprising study of an intriguing and at times “infernal” regiment, Holly A. Mayer marshals personal and official accounts—from the letters and journals of Continentals and congressmen to the pension applications of veterans and their widows—to reveal what the personal passions, hardships, and accommodations of the 2nd Canadian can tell us about the greater military and civil dynamics of the American Revolution. Congress’s Own follows congressmen, commanders, and soldiers through the Revolutionary War as the regiment’s story shifts from tents and trenches to the halls of power and back. Interweaving insights from borderlands and community studies with military history, Mayer tracks key battles and traces debates that raged within the Revolution’s military and political borderlands wherein subjects became rebels, soldiers, and citizens. Her book offers fresh, vivid accounts of the Revolution that disclose how “Congress’s Own” regiment embodied the dreams, diversity, and divisions within and between the Continental Army, Congress, and the emergent union of states during the War for American Independence.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1923, Vol. 47 Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen - To tell the story of the scientists of Philadelphia would require many hours. I propose therefore to restrict myself to a recital of the work of some of the men who were partial to my science, chemistry, because it is the oldest of the sciences. All other sciences are dependent upon it. In the language of another, it has done more for the comfort, the welfare and the happiness of man than all the others put together. There was a time when chemistry was looked upon as the black art. There was a period in its history when kings and emperors called it to their aid. Ivhen their money coffers were depleted they looked to the devotees of the science to replenish them. That was the period in which chemis try bore the name alchemy, when it was said to be the science or the art of making gold and silver; when through the instrumentality of what was termed the philosopher's stone, base, ignoble metals were trans muted into the precious metals, silver and gold. No one ever dreamed that alchemy was practiced outside of Europe. If five years ago any chemist in any part of the world had been asked whether alchemy was. Book excerpt: A historic and symbolic city on the border between slavery and freedom, antebellum Philadelphia was home to one of the largest and most influential "free" African American communities in the United States. The city was seen by residents and observers as the stage on which the possibilities of freedom would be tested and a post-slavery future would be played out for the nation. Philadelphia's charged setting produced a distinctive literary tradition that confronted issues of race, character, violence, and liberty. Verbal performance and social behavior assumed the weight of race and nation. The city's social experiments would have international consequences. This account of Philadelphia's literary history from 1790 to1860 brings together writers familiar (Charles Brockden Brown, Edgar Allan Poe, John Edgar Wideman), lesser known (Hugh Henry Brackenridge, George Lippard, Frank J. Webb), and obscure (Mathew Carey, Robert Montgomery Bird, William Whipper, Joseph Willson). It draws on a host of diverse, often discounted expressive forms, from fever accounts and metempsychic fiction to caricatures and book covers.Samuel Otter's authoritative study considers the significance of geographical, social, and literary "place." It offers a model for thinking about the relationships between literature and history and among European-American and African-American writers. It challenges conventional narratives of American literary history. And finally, it establishes Philadelphia as fundamental to our understanding of not only the political but also the imaginative life of nineteenth-century America.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, 1885, Vol. 9 In November, 1755, an Act of Parliament had been passed for raising a regiment of four battalions, each of 1000 men, in America. The men were to be drawn from the Swiss and other foreigners settled in the colonies, but principally from the Germans in Pennsylvania, to be strengthened, however, by seven or eight hundred Old soldiers from Germany. Major John Rutherford, to whom the recruit ing of the regiment was committed, writes to Governor Shirley, from Philadelphia, on the 29th of June, 1756. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 28 Rolling Mill at Manchester, in Allegheny County, to make iron rails. Connected with this mill were two coke furnaces, built in 1863. The company operated the works until Sep tember, 186 7, when they were leased by Springer Harbaugh. On January 1, 1870, Harbaugh, Mathias Owens took pos session as owners, and on August 1, 1874, they failed, when the manufacture of rails was abandoned. The works them selves have long been abandoned A few other iron-rail mills in Western Pennsylvania, including those which were equipped for the manufacture only of mine rails and other light rails, need not be mentioned. Of these mills those which made rails of heavy sections never at any time pro duced any considerable tonnage. It is a noteworthy fact that Allegheny County, with all its enterprise in the manufacture of iron and steel, did not begin to make rails of heavy sec tions until the Superior Rolling Mill was built in 1865. Iron rails are not now made in Western Pennsylvania, except occasionally a very few tons of light rails for lum ber and mine roads. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pennsylvania Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 18 The Commodore and many other Gentlemen, who have made it their business to examine the River, say the channel is so narrow that not more than two ships can lye abreast in it. If this be a fact, as I have no reason to doubt, from the concurrent testimony of so many Gentlemen, it will be impossible for the enemy to bring a greater force up the river than there is to Oppose them. How they will be able under these circumstances to remove the Obstruction in the river, when they are constantly annoy'd and threaten'd with the fire rafts, is difficult for me to conceive. However it is proposed in aid to these, to add some fortifications upon the land, one at Billingsport, one at Red Bank, and one at Derby's Creek, the situation Of all which your Excellency had an opportunity to see. I will just examine how far they will add to the security Of the River, and what force it would take to give this aid, and then see wether the security on this side, will not diminish the land force to such a degree as to render the principal Object less secure than without them, not to say any thing about the expence and trouble attending their construction. Book excerpt: With the American revolutionaries in discord following victory at Yorktown and the Paris Peace Treaty of 1783, the proposed federal Constitution of 1787 faced an uncertain future when it was sent to the states for ratification. Sensing an historic moment, three authors--Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and John Jay--circulated 85 essays among their fellow statesmen, arguing for a strong federal union. Next to the Constitution itself, The Federalist papers are the most referenced statement of the Founding Fathers' intentions in forming the U.S. government. This book takes a fresh look at the papers in the context of the times in which they were created.
