Book excerpt: Raymond Flower brings the enchanting history of the secluded Italian region Chianti to vivid life. Using meticulous research, Flower presents the engrossing tales of the Etruscans, the Romans, the Lombards, the factions of the Guelphs and the Ghibellines and explores the rise of the communes and the struggles between the Empire and the Papacy. In the late Middle Ages, Chianti was the scene of decisive battles, and many of its medieval buildings were destroyed in the Aragonese invasions of the 15th century. Flower is himself a wine grower, and this dazzling story evokes the beauty of the vintage, which has been a part of the region since Etruscan times.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Village Boy to Global Citizen (Volume 1): The Journey of a Journalist is the first of an autobiographical trilogy that tells the story of a rustic lad born and raised in the southern tip of the British colony of Ceylon (now independent Sri Lanka) but left his country at the age of 26 on a geographical "conquest" of the world that turned him metaphorically into a global citizen. Starting his professional career as a journalist for the Daily News, Ceylon's premier English-language daily, he became a journalism teacher at the age of 32, when he received a doctorate in mass communication. However, he continued practicing journalism as a free-lancer throughout his teaching career in Malaysia, Australia and the United States. Volume 1 unfolds the transition of the author's life from a village kid to a global journalist and educator. It dramatizes the obstacles he had to overcome, as well as the support he received from his benefactors, in the transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There must be a closure to the history of Pulau Pinang (and Kedah). There was no 1786 treaty - no agreement, no document, no signatories. The narrative continues independent of each other, representing an uncomfortable conscience glancing at each as two separate polities of Penang and Kedah, socially and intellectually structured by the year 1786. This book makes a strange revisit to pretension of a fact/event. And it counters the terra nullius doctrine. It also establishes that the lex loci was the Adat Temenggong (customary law) modified by the Qanun (laws) of Kedah. Malay collective memory maintains that Pulau Pinang is integral to the Kedah Sultanate. The island has law, order and society before the presence of the Europeans; not a "band of natives and fishermen" as stereotyped by the colonial narrative, even in the colonial courts. The Malays in Pulau Pinang in recent decades have become 'beggars' to their own history. This book contests that history through moral and legal arguments, as well as raising the themes and issues of representation and redemption.
