Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An up-to-date guide for commercial and residential peach growers . . . With an estimated one million trees producing almost fifty million pounds of fruit per year, Texas is a leading producer of peaches, and several popular seasonal festivals highlight the widespread enjoyment of and interest in this delicious, versatile fruit. In addition, a recent rise of interest in edible gardens and home fruit production has led more people to think about planting a peach tree in the yard—or paying closer attention to the one they already have. Jim Kamas and Larry Stein, drawing from their many years of experience and the best current research, provide authoritative advice for those who want to improve peach production, whether in a large commercial orchard or on a single tree in the back yard. With discussions ranging from site selection to marketing ideas, Texas Peach Handbook covers the basics of peach cultivation—planting, pruning, fertilizing, watering, protecting, thinning, harvesting—and gives both instruction on disease and insect control and advice on the financial aspects of the peach business. The authors also direct readers to other, more detailed or technical sources, for those who want to learn more about a given topic. For its useful information and expert guidance, this how-to handbook will prove indispensable for anyone who grows, or wants to grow, peaches.

Book excerpt: Developed especially for use by backyard orchardists, rare fruit growers, and small-scale growers, The Home Orchard offers a comprehensive look at standard growing methods, as well as some innovative practices that enthusiasts have developed in recent years, some of which are uniquely suited to the small-scale grower. You will learn how trees grow, which species grow best in the different regions and soils, varieties from which to select, preparing the soil, planting, watering and fertilizing, pruning and grafting, thinning the fruit, diagnosing problems, controlling pests, and harvesting. You'll also find special attention given to organic and non-toxic pest management and fertilization methods. Key pests and diseases are identified and natural control methods are emphasized. Irrigation methods for the backyard grower are discussed and the difficult task of how often and how much water to apply is simplified. The focus is on giving the trees enough water but doing so in an efficient, water-saving manner. Included are hundreds of photographs and diagrams that clearly show how to produce the best crops. Photos of several practices, such as key budding and grafting methods, are depicted in step-by-step photos. No other publication provides this breadth and depth of coverage --

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term "peach growing" is used to describe the process of tending to peach trees in order to harvest the fruit. To ensure a healthy and abundant yield, peach trees require a number of specific care and cultivation techniques. The following are examples of such methods: 1. Successful peach cultivation requires careful site selection, including consideration of factors such as soil drainage, exposure to sunlight, and shelter from wind. 2. Variety Selection: There are several peach varieties, each with varied qualities like as flavor, size, and cold resistance. Depending on the growing conditions and consumer preferences, farmers choose which types to cultivate. 3. Peach trees should be planted at the appropriate depth and spaced apart. Correct spacing allows for healthy air flow, which plays a role in disease avoidance. 4. Regular pruning is necessary to maintain the tree's shape, stimulate the most fruit growth, and get rid of any unhealthy or dead branches. 5. Fertilization: Giving the tree what it needs to thrive, including nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, is crucial for producing quality fruit. 6. Common pests like aphids and illnesses like brown rot must be controlled if the peach crop is to be protected. 7. Drought stress can be avoided with regular and sufficient irrigation, which is especially important during dry years. 8. Peach trees need to be thinned during the growth season so that the surviving fruit has room to grow and adequate nutrition. 9. Peaches should be collected when they are ripe but not overripe, therefore it's crucial to know at the right time to harvest them. Peaches are ripe when they are firm but give just a little when gently pressed. 10. After picking, peaches should be handled gently to prevent bruising; from there, they can be kept, sold, or processed into things like jams, pies, and canned peaches. To achieve a fruitful and high-quality harvest, peach growers must pay close attention to detail and have a solid grasp on the special requirements of peach trees. Climate, soil, and the individual tastes of the producer all have an impact on the methods used.

Book excerpt: The Peach Tree Project began 25 years ago with The Peach Tree newsletter. This was just a simple rag sheet of what little I had learned about my research of Peach genealogy. I had no intention of this newsletter going anywhere but to the 24 people who first received it. It was an innocent attempt to try to make contact with others whom I thought might be interested in this subject. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine how this would become a lifetime project and touch the homes of thousands of Peach descendants all over the world. Now 25 years later, the 150th Issue of The Peach Tree newsletter has become a reality. This book is about our Peach Heroes. Originally, all I could think about when I thought of heroes were those who had engaged in the military service of our country. Therefore, this book begins with our dedicated Peach war veterans. However, after completing the rough draft of the book, I felt there was a gaping hole in the book that had to be filled. I struggled for months to find things to fill this emptiness. As I wrestled with this, I had no solution for my consuming problem. Then came the 10th National Peach Reunion in Chattanooga, Tennessee. While I was standing before those who came from twelve different states and from as far away as California, Maine and Minnesota, I was struck with the awesome reality that I was looking at my Peach heroes. Most of these had spent all or a major part of the past 25 years with me helping to sustain and grow this Peach Tree Project.
