Book excerpt: He boldly compares the conservative intellectual movement to the radical Utopians among the New Left of the 1960s; and he explains how conservatism has ingested central features of American culture, including a distrust of sophistication and intellectualism and a love of popular culture, sensation, shock, and celebrity." "Both a work of history and political criticism, Rebels All! shows how the conservative mind made itself appealing but also points to its inherent problems."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis Magic Songs of the West Finns: The Pre and Proto Historic Finns (Complete) by : John Abercromby
Download or read book Magic Songs of the West Finns: The Pre and Proto Historic Finns (Complete) written by John Abercromby and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this country the term Finn is generally restricted to the natives of Finland, with perhaps those of Esthonia thrown in. But besides these Western Finns there are other small nationalities in Central and Northern Russia, such as the Erza and Mok_a Mordvins, the _eremis, Votiaks, Permians, and Z_rians, to whom the term is very properly applied, though with the qualifying adjectiveÑEastern. Except by Folklorists, little attention is paid in Great Britain to these peoples, and much that is written of them abroad finds no response here, the 'silver streak' acting, it would seem, as a non-conductor to such unsensational and feeble vibrations. Although the languages of the Eastern and Western Finns differ as much perhaps among themselves as the various members of the Aryan group, the craniological and physical differences between any two Finnish groups is very much less than between the Latin and the Teutonic groups, for instance. All the Finns live nearly under the same latitudes, and in pre- and proto-historic times, which are not so very remote, the differences in customs, religious and other beliefs, could not have been very great. This is important; it allows us to supplement what is missing or defective in one Finnish group by what is more complete in another, with far greater certainty than when dealing under similar circumstances with the Aryan-speaking groups. In the first five chapters of the first volume I have tried, with the combined aid of craniology, arch¾ology, ethnography, and philology, brought up to date, to sketch as succinctly as possible the pre- and proto-historic history of the Eastern and Western Finns, showing the various stages of civilisation to which they successively advanced after contact with higher civilisations, at different periods of their evolution from neolithic times to the middle ages. Chapters six and seven contain an analysis of the beliefs of the Western Finns, so far as they can be gathered from the text of the Magic Songs in the second volume; and a perusal of them will facilitate the comprehension of the Magic Songs themselves. The second volume, containing 639 magic songs, some of considerable length, classed under 233 headings, is a translation of a very large portion of the Suomen kansan muinaisia Loitsurunoja, edited and published by the late Dr. Lšnnrot in 1880. As the translation was made for Folklorists it is as literal as possible, without additions, without subtractions, and the vocabulary employed is in conformity with the subject, with the humble social status and homely surroundings of the original composers. The metre of the original is the same as in the Kalevala, which cannot be reproduced in a language like English, where the ictus of the metre has to coincide with the natural stress-accent of the words. But where it could be done without loss of exactness a certain rhythm, generally three beats to a line, is given in the translation, though to save space the lines are printed in prose form.

Download or read book My Wild Garden written by Meir Shalev and published by Schocken. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A colorfully illustrated round of the season in the garden of the best-selling novelist, memoirist, and champion putterer with a wheelbarrow On the perimeter of Israel’s Jezreel Valley, with the Carmel mountains rising up in the west, Meir Shalev has a beloved garden, “neither neatly organized nor well kept,” as he cheerfully explains. Often covered in mud and scrapes, Shalev cultivates both nomadic plants and “house dwellers,” using his own quirky techniques. He extolls the virtues of the lemon tree, rescues a precious variety of purple snapdragon from the Jerusalem–Tel Aviv highway, and does battle with a saboteur mole rat. He even gives us his superior private recipe for curing olives. Informed by Shalev’s literary sensibility, his sometime riotous humor, and his deep curiosity about the land, My Wild Garden abounds with appreciation for the joy of living, quite literally, on Earth. Our borrowed time on any particular patch of it is enhanced, the author reminds us, by our honest, respectful dealings with all manner of beings who inhabit it with us.
Book Synopsis Newer Paths in Muslim-Christian Understanding by : Ron George
Download or read book Newer Paths in Muslim-Christian Understanding written by Ron George and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2007-10 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tries to outline (most inadequately) the conclusion that God is not limited by man's ways and wants all men to come to know the truth - Christ himself. A man can be a Messianic Jew, a Hindu Sadhu - as was Sadhu Sundar Singh - or a Messianic Muslim. So often our faith is culture bound; we have often interpreted the Bible from a cultural perspective and not seen the God who relates to all men. He does not want a Western form of Christianity to be imposed upon others. In Genesis 2 v 18-20 we have the cultural mandate that man was to rule over the earth and create his own society. Most Muslim converts go back into Islam, not because of a failure to be enamored by Christ but because of a loss of their identity and unacceptance by the Christian community. Few understand the forces that are at play within all of us. Ron George has been involved in missions in the Islamic world for over 44 years. He has written widely on the subject, traveled to over 30 lands and met with Muslim leaders to try to understand their points of view. His views come out of a serious study of the Islamic peoples and the Qur'an, a love for those peoples and an appreciation of their roots. He takes what well-known missiologists present and brings them to their logical conclusion in evaluating Muslim-Christian understandings. He feels that only the eyes of love can fully appreciate the task of communicating Christ to Islamic peoples, building upon what they have and not destroying what God has already started. He sees that in trying to understand others leads to better understanding our own faith. This is a book about new beginnings in understanding Muslims and adds to that process.
