Book excerpt: Pretty Penny is a story of self-identification and discovery of self-worth as told by a newly minted penny. In the process of comparing itself to other coins, in humorous rhyme, it explores the issues of its own value, purpose, and usefulness in society. As it overhears a conversation between a father and son, it gains knowledge and self-confidence about its role and the service that it would provide. The story should serve as a metaphor for our own voyages of discovery from childhood to maturity and the contribution we each can make to the world around us.

Book excerpt: The sequel to the award-winning, historical romance novel Shaman is here: The Passage Picking up the story where Shaman ended, The Passage continues the saga of Dr. Matt Tyler and Degan, the Seneca woman whose life he saved. In the spring of 1869, Dr. Matt Tyler has returned to his home in Washington from the Allegheny Reservation with Degan and their young son, Adam, to begin their life together as a family. But Matt soon discovers a long-held family secret that upends his world and threatens the Tyler family legacy. As Degan tries to adjust to her new life in the affluent surroundings of the well-to-do of the Victorian Era, her bond with Matt is tested again and again through struggle and unspeakable tragedy. In rich detail from new settings across the globe, new characters — as well as familiar and beloved characters from Shaman — all play against the backdrop of the epic love story of Matt and Degan. From Washington, the seat of power in America, to the wealthy neighborhoods of London, to the tropical shores of Cape Palmas in West Africa, The Passage continues the poignant and inspiring story of great love that transcends cultural differences and intolerance.

Three of them crash, and two are killed. In early December 1940, Brad Harper, now a member of a jazz group, embarks on a steamship in Philadelphia for a two week working cruise, promising his family to be home for Christmas. When the ship docks in San Francisco, he unexpectedly encounters his uncle Jack, who is traveling to China to help operate a flying school. Jack tries to entice Brad into joining him, but Brad declines. However, while disembarking the ship, he meets a young doctor, Dorothy Lee Devereux (Dolly) and, like Jack, she is also traveling to the orient. It's love at first sight for both and Brad follows her to China. As luck would have it, both she and Jack are traveling to the same city. Arriving in Kunming, Brad's airmail experience puts him in good stead at the flying school and he soon becomes a flight instructor while Dolly works at Kunming General Hospital. With war looming, he is reluctantly drawn into Clare Chennault's Flying Tigers and becomes a squadron commander. As the war unfolds, he flies several missions against the Japanese, extracts vengeance when he murders a treacherous Chinese colonel, is involved in a midair collision, and faces courts-martial for a mercy killing. Soon after, he and Dolly marry, he is injured and they return home with an adopted daughter. Recovered, he is assigned to deliver aircraft to operational squadrons. On one such trip to England, he is Shanghaied into the Eight Air Force and detailed to a fighter squadron. On one mission he so distinguishes himself, he comes to the attention of General Doolittle, and is awarded a very high honor. Reluctant to return home, he convinces General Doolittle to allow him to remain in theater and is given positions of increasing responsibility. Meanwhile, his wife remains with his family in a small sea shore town to practice medicine. When the underworld attempts to take over the fishing industry, she is raped by gangsters. Before long an opportunity presents itself, and she extracts a brutal revenge. Discovered to have euthanized a patient, she finds others share her values. Returning home at war's end, circumstances have Brad departing the Newark, NJ airport in a P-51 fighter with no parachute. The plane, having been serviced from an old gas truck, has been contaminated.

Book excerpt: Set in the heyday of the 1960s Civil Rights Movement and Vietnam War era, Right of Passage explores the social change and conflict involved in that period. The emotional development of Chris, a middle-class black man, is explored-being black in white society, conflicting cultural allegiances and the contradictions of his inner life. Chris meets Miriam, a white fellow academic, an irresistible mutual attraction complicated by fear and self-doubt, and the resistance of their families. Against a background of racial conflict, interwoven with day-to-day scenes of black middle-class life, this is a picture of the inexplicable and transforming power of love, and the irony, humor, and pain involved in measuring up to self-professed humane ideals.
