Book excerpt: Marshall Hall was trained as a physician in the early nineteenth century, scientifically oriented, University of Edinburgh Medical School. The son of a Methodist cotton manufacturer and bleacher at Nottingham, Hall believed that in science lay the future for progress in medicine. Following early work on diagnosis, on women's disorders and on blood-letting, Hall came to specialise in the nervous system and in particular on the concept of reflex action. For Hall, who proposed a mechanistic explanation of reflex action, Galenic animal spirits and souls in decapitated creatures were out. A superb experimentalist, Hall strove to establish experimental medicine (physiology) as the basis of the medical curriculum instead of anatomy, the long standing domain of the surgeons. They were among the strongest critics of Hall's vivisection procedures, despite his efforts to establish a Code of Practice. Hall was involved in several controversies within and without the Royal Society where he was victimised by its Physiological Committee. He addressed a range of social and public health issues including the abolition of slavery, and devised a new method of resuscitation and a more sensitive physiological test for strychnine detection. He also proposed plans for improving and linking sewage disposal and the transport system of the metropolis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Green, who died in 2004, was for sixty years one of Britain's most active and best-known ghost-hunters. The Daily Telegraph famously christened him 'the Spectre Inspector'. The author of best-sellers such as Our Haunted Kingdom and Ghost Hunting: a Practical Guide, he investigated hundreds of reported hauntings during his career, from famous cases such as 'the poltergeist girl of Battersea' to cases where a client had simply taken the wrong medication before bed. The most important cases from his lifetime of research are collected together in this volume - alongside new research and many reports that have never previously been published. This is an essential guide to the career of Britain's most famous ghost-hunter, and indeed to the paranormal history of ' our haunted kingdom'.

Book excerpt: This antique book contains two written pieces by Washington Irving: 'An Old Christmas' and 'Bracebridge Hall'. 'An Old Christmas' is a charming piece detailing old English Christmas traditions, also beautifully illustrated by the British illustrator, Randolph Caldecott. 'Bracebridge Hall' is a series of character sketches set at Bracebridge Hall, near Birmingham, England. Containing a number of individual plots, this narrative concentrates on the occupants of the English manor: the Bracebridge family. A delightful book that is sure to appeal to fans and collectors of Irving's prolific work, this antique text is well deserving of a place on any bookshelf and is not to be missed. Washington Irving (1783 - 1859) was a nineteenth century, American author, biographer, essayist, historian, and diplomat. Originally published in 1919, we are proud to republish this text, now complete with a new prefatory biography of the author.
