Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Paris Exhibition, 1900, Vol. 2 The little girl is in white with her skirts gathered round her waist and a kerchief around her shoulders. She is standing on the summit of a hill, where flowers grow at her feet. This kind of picture gave great pleasure to Sir Joshua to paint, and one can see how lovingly he lingered over it. Another of Sir Charles Tennant's fine pictures is the beautiful portrait of Miss Ridge, daughter of Counsellor Ridge, of the Irish Bar, who was a great personal friend of Sir Joshua. This was painted in December, 1773. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Exposition Universelle, 1900: Chefs-D'oeuvre And yet, in these very wide domains how many corners have been explored, how many delicate phases of extreme beauty and grace, which should have sufficed to open the spiritual eyes of the dullest observer, have thus been presented by this extraordinary art. There seems to be no spiritual message of the beauty of the physical world which the astonished pigments, dull and opaque as they are, have not been com pelled by this magic into portraying, at one time or another, by some of the more modern landscape-painters, - impalpable and flitting visions of glory on land and sea done into permanence by the painters for the good of their fellows. There are charmingly subtle graces of form and movement, momentary, the touch of a second, the glance of an eye, a little feminine mannerism, a little air of the eighteenth century, which French sculptors have known how to seize and to perpetuate in sense less calcareous stone. By the side of the most brutal, of the most vivid rendering of the most violent expression - and not infrequently by the same artist - may be seen these marvels of lightness wrought by one of the most artistic temperaments and by one of the most perfect techniques of the world. About Art everything has already been said, and constant repetition leads to triteness. One of these trite observations is that the impor tance which, it has been agreed, shall be attached to the artist's work is due to the quality of the ideas with which he meddles and to his faculty as a creating agent. Out of nothing palpable he makes. Some thing; out of the intangible which pervades space around us he congeals definite images in form and color. He is able to evoke, and to evoke in the precise, as has been said. The historical painters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2019-10-29 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How W.E.B. Du Bois combined photographs and infographics to communicate the everyday realities of Black lives and the inequities of race in America At the 1900 Paris Exposition the pioneering sociologist and activist W.E.B. Du Bois presented an exhibit representing the progress of African Americans since the abolition of slavery. In striking graphic visualisations and photographs (taken by mostly anonymous photographers) he showed the changing status of a newly emancipated people across America and specifically in Georgia, the state with the largest Black population. This beautifully designed book reproduces the photographs alongside the revolutionary graphic works for the first time, and includes a marvelous essay by two celebrated art historians, Jacqueline Francis and Stephen G. Hall. Du Bois' hand-drawn charts, maps and graphs represented the achievements and economic conditions of African Americans in radically inventive forms, long before such data visualization was commonly used in social research. Their clarity and simplicity seems to anticipate the abstract art of the Russian constructivists and other modernist painters to come. The photographs were drawn from African American communities across the United States. Both the photographers and subjects are mostly anonymous. They show people engaged in various occupations or posing formally for group and studio portraits. Elegant and dignified, they refute the degrading stereotypes of Black people then prevalent in white America. Du Bois' exhibit at the Paris Exposition continues to resonate as a powerful affirmation of the equal rights of Black Americans to lives of freedom and fulfilment. Black Lives 1900 captures this singular work. American sociologist, historian, author, editor and activist W.E.B. Du Bois (1868-1963) was the most influential Black civil rights activist of the first half of the 20th century. He was a protagonist in the founding of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909, and his 1903 bookThe Souls of Black Folk remains a classic and a landmark of African American literature.
