Book excerpt: A disagreeable feature of this otherwise satisfactory condition of things was the necessary secrecy: the transfer of the luncheon, for example, had to be made at some distance from the madding crowd, in a wood; and I blush to think of the many other unworthy subterfuges entailed by the situation. As I was (and am) naturally of a frank and open disposition, these became more and more irksome, and but for the reluctance of my parents to renounce the obvious advantages of the new regime I would gladly have reverted to the old. The plan that I finally adopted to free myself from the consequences of my own powers excited a wide and keen interest at the time, and that part of it which consisted in the death of the girl was severely condemned, but it is hardly pertinent to the scope of this narrative....FROM THE BOOKS.

Book excerpt: Having murdered my mother under circumstances of singularatrocity, I was arrested and put upon my trial, which lasted sevenyears. In charging the jury, the judge of the Court of Acquittalremarked that it was one of the most ghastly crimes that he hadever been called upon to explain away.At this, my attorney rose and said: "May it please your Honor, crimes are ghastly or agreeable onlyby comparison. If you were familiar with the details of my client'sprevious murder of his uncle you would discern in his later offense(if offense it may be called) something in the nature of tenderforbearance and filial consideration for the feelings of the victim. The appalling ferocity of the former assassination was indeedinconsistent with any hypothesis but that of gui

Book excerpt: Four grotesque short stories about murder within the family, seen through the gently innocent eyes of family members ... usually the murderer himself. My favorite murder; Oil of Dog; An Imperfect Conflagration; The Hypnotist.Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842 - 1914) was an American editorialist, journalist, short story writ-er, fabulist, and satirist. He wrote the short story "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and compiled a satirical lexicon, The Devil's Dictionary. His vehemence as a crit-ic, his motto "Nothing matters", and the sardonic view of human nature that informed his work, all earned him the nickname "Bitter Bierce". Despite his reputation as a searing critic, Bierce was known to encourage younger writers, including the poets George Sterling and Herman George Scheffauer and the fiction writer W. C. Morrow. Bierce employed a distinctive style of writing, especially in his stories. His style often embraces an abrupt beginning, dark imagery, vague references to time, limited descriptions, impossible events, and the theme of war. In 1913, Bierce traveled to Mexico to gain first-hand experience of the Mexican Revolution. He was rumored to be traveling with rebel troops, and was not seen again.

Book Synopsis The Short Stories of Ambrose Bierce by : Stuart C. Woodruff
Download or read book The Short Stories of Ambrose Bierce written by Stuart C. Woodruff and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 1964-03-15 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most interesting figures to emerge at the turn of the twentieth century was Ambrose Bierce, whose acerbic columns in the San Francisco Examiner spread his fame as America’s most bitter cynic and misanthrope, and whose disappearance into Mexico surrounded his name with an aura of mystery. Although best known during his lifetime for his journalism and always critical of his own writing—“the magnificent intention mocked by the actual achievement”—Bierce’s fiction endures, especially his short stories about the Civil War. Originally published in the 1890s and rediscovered in the 1920s, the Civil War stories are filled with unsparing descriptions of death and suffering, disillusionment and fatalism. They also show a concern for form and craftsmanship, a controlled irony, and an economy of detail that are distinctly modern. In this pioneering study of Bierce’s stories, Stuart Woodruff examines the best and worst of Bierce’s fiction with clarity and excellent critical sense, and he traces the causes of Bierce’s success and failure as a writer, analyzing his inability to reconcile the extremes of temperament and belief that marked his life and give his stories their characteristic form. Among the pieces discussed: “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” “The Mocking-bird,” “One of the Missing,” “Chickamauga,” “Haïta the Shepherd,” “What I Saw at Shiloh,” and excerpts from The Devil’s Dictionary and Tales of Soldiers and Civilians.
Book Synopsis Ambrose Bierce and the Dance of Death by : Sharon Talley
Download or read book Ambrose Bierce and the Dance of Death written by Sharon Talley and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ambrose Bierce and the Dance of Death uses psychoanalytic theory in combination with historical, cultural, and literary contexts to examine the complex motif of death in a full range of Bierce’s writings. Scholarly interest in Bierce, whose work has long been undervalued, has grown significantly in recent years. This new book contributes to the ongoing reassessment by providing new contexts for joining the texts in his canon in meaningful ways. Previous attempts to consider Bierce from a psychological perspective have been superficial, often reductive Freudian readings of individual stories such as “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” and “The Death of Halpin Frayser.” This new volume not only updates these interpretations with insights from post-Freudian theorists but uses contemporary death theory as a framework to analyze the sources and expressions of Bierce’s attitudes about death and dying. This approach makes it possible to discern links among texts that resolve some of the still puzzling ambiguities that have—until now—precluded a fuller understanding of both the man and his writings. Lively and engaging, Ambrose Bierce and the Dance of Death adds valuable new insights not only to the study of Bierce but to that of nineteenth-century American literature in general.
