The execution rate of this implementation of the PMM is at about 1.7 Gflops/sec for a particle- processor-ratio of 10 or greater. A further speed improvement is possible by an improved use of the memory hierarchy associated with each floating- point unit in the system."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The foundations of parallel computation, especially the efficiency of computation, are the concern of this book. Distinguished international researchers have contributed fifteen chapters which together form a coherent stream taking the reader who has little prior knowledge of the field to a position of being familiar with leading edge issues. The book may also function as a source of teaching material and reference for researchers. The first part is devoted to the Parallel Random Access Machine (P-RAM) model of parallel computation. The initial chapters justify and define the model, which is then used for the development of algorithm design in a variety of application areas such as deterministic algorithms, randomisation and algorithm resilience. The second part deals with distributed memory models of computation. The question of efficiently implementing P-RAM algorithms within these models is addressed as are the immensely interesting prospects for general purpose parallel computation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of the Third DIMACS Implementation Challenge that was conducted as part of the 1993-94 Special year on Parallel Algorithms. The Implementation Challenge was formulated in order to provide a forum for a concerted effort to study effective algorithms for combinatorial problems and to investigate opportunities for massive speed-ups on parallel computers. The challenge invluded two problem areas for research study: tree searching, algorithms, used in game search and combinatorial optimization, for example, and algorithms for sparse graphs. Participants at sites in the US and Europe undertook projects from November 1993 through October 1994. The workshop was held at DIMACS in November 1994. Participants were encouraged to share test results, to rework their implementations considering feedback at the workshop, and to submit a final report for the proceedings. Nine papers were selected for this volume.

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were selected for presentation at the Fourth Annual International Computing and Combinatorics Conference (COCOON’98), held on August 12–14, 1998, in Taipei. The topics cover most aspects of theoretical computer science and combinatorics related to computing. Submissions to the conference this year was only conducted electronically. Thanks to the excellent software developed by the system team of the Institute of Information Science, we were able to make virtually all communications through the World Wide Web. A total of 69 papers was submitted in time to be considered, of which 36 papers were accepted for presentation at the conference. In addition to these contributed papers, the conference also included four invited presentations by Christo Papadimitriou, Michael Fishcher, Fan Chung Graham and Rao Kosaraju. It is expected that most of the accepted papers will appear in a more complete form in scienti?c journals. Moreover, selected papers will appear in a special issue of Theoretical Computer Science. We thank all program committee members, their support sta? and referees for excellent work within demanding time constraints. We thank all authors who submitted papers for consideration. We are especially grateful to our colleagues who worked hard and o?ered widely di?ering talents to make the conference both possible and enjoyable. Book excerpt: The aim of this NATO ASI has been to present an up-to-date overview of current areas of interest in amorphous materials. In order to limit the material to a manageable amount, the meeting was concerned exclusively with insulating and semiconducting materials. The lectures and seminars fill the gap between graduate courses and research seminars. The lecturers and seminar speakers were chosen as experts in their respective areas and the lectures and seminars that were given are presented in this volume. During the first week of the meeting. an emphasis was placed on introductory lectures, mainly associated with questions relating to the glass-formation and the structure of glasses. The second week focused more on research seminars. Each day of the meeting. about four posters were presented during the coffee breaks, and these formed an important focus for discussions. The posters are not reproduced in this volume as the editors wanted to have only larger contributions to make this volume more coherent. This volume is organized into four sections, starting with general considerations of the glass forming ability and techniques for the preparation of different kinds of glasses.

Book excerpt: This work is a needed reference for widely used techniques and methods of computer simulation in physics and other disciplines, such as materials science. Molecular dynamics computes a molecule's reactions and dynamics based on physical models; Monte Carlo uses random numbers to image a system's behaviour when there are different possible outcomes with related probabilities. The work conveys both the theoretical foundations as well as applications and "tricks of the trade", that often are scattered across various papers. Thus it will meet a need and fill a gap for every scientist who needs computer simulations for his/her task at hand. In addition to being a reference, case studies and exercises for use as course reading are included.

The FMM is a recently developed scheme for the evaluation of the potential and force fields in systems of particles whose interactions are Coulombic or gravitational in nature. The sequential method requires O(N) operations to obtain the fields due to N charges at N points, rather than the O(N Squared) operations required by the direct calculation. Here, we describe the modifications necessary for implementation of the method on parallel architectures and show that the expected time requirements grow as log N when using N processors. Numerical results are given for a shared memory machine (the Encore Multimax 320). (kr).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parallelizing the Adaptive Fast Multipole Method on a Shared Memory MIMD Machine Hence the multipole method can be viewed as a fast algorithm for applying a Hilbert matrix to an arbitrary vector. In this form, the problem has been studied by several others but the multipole algorithm appears to be the most practical computational approach. The multipole algorithm makes use of a multipole expansion to compute forces between groups of particles that are well-separated in the plane. It is based on the following theorem, a proof of which can be found in [7. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications ALGORITHMS FOR PARALLEL PROCESSING is based on the proceedings of a workshop that was an integral part of the 1996-97 IMA program on "MATHEMATICS IN HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING. " The workshop brought together algorithm developers from theory, combinatorics, and scientific computing. The topics ranged over models, linear algebra, sorting, randomization, and graph algorithms and their analysis. We thank Michael T. Heath of University of lllinois at Urbana (Com puter Science), Abhiram Ranade of the Indian Institute of Technology (Computer Science and Engineering), and Robert S. Schreiber of Hewlett Packard Laboratories for their excellent work in organizing the workshop and editing the proceedings. We also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Founda tion (NSF) and the Army Research Office (ARO), whose financial support made the workshop possible. A vner Friedman Robert Gulliver v PREFACE The Workshop on Algorithms for Parallel Processing was held at the IMA September 16 - 20, 1996; it was the first workshop of the IMA year dedicated to the mathematics of high performance computing. The work shop organizers were Abhiram Ranade of The Indian Institute of Tech nology, Bombay, Michael Heath of the University of Illinois, and Robert Schreiber of Hewlett Packard Laboratories. Our idea was to bring together researchers who do innovative, exciting, parallel algorithms research on a wide range of topics, and by sharing insights, problems, tools, and methods to learn something of value from one another.
