Book excerpt: A study of the basic science and clinical applications of the parahippocampal region, taken from the proceedings of a New York Academy of Sciences conference held in September 1999. Neuroscience research in this region suggests that its neuropathy contributes directly to the progression of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, schizophrenia, and epilepsy. These papers and posters integrate gains in our knowledge of the structure and function of the parahippocampus into diagnostic and intervention pathways to treatment of these debilitating diseases. The studies provide a survey of research on parahippocampal anatomy, biochemistry and physiology and its interaction with other structures, including the amygdala and the hippocampal regions. The book offers views of the hippocampus, drawn both from laboratory animal research and from human subjects, and suggests ways of continuing the most promising areas with imaging and modelling techniques.
