It gave ex pression to thoughts which burdened the mind of Jesus throughout His ministry. On the day He uttered it, he had left the house and was sitting by the sea-side, and there were gathered unto Him great multitudes. He had no difficulty in finding an audience. It is one of the greatest pleasures to listen to a good speaker. It is a pleasure which attracts young and old, rich and poor, educated and uneducated. A good speaker is always sure of an audience, and especially where he has not to encounter the rivalry of books. But as Jesus watched the crowd assembling, and perceived the various dispositions with which the people came, He could not but reflect how much of what He had to say must certainly be lost on many. He knew He had that to tell men which. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of the Old Testament F the matter contained in these pages, a small portion has already been published in a series of articles in the Quiver; the greater part is new. It will be seen at once that the work has no claim to originality or independent research or to that wealth of imagination and learning which has made Trench's Notes on the Parables of the New Testament one of the most valuable books of our generation. It addresses itself to simple readers; and is merely a help to Bible reading. Its object is to group together in right connexion and gradation all the phases of parabolic teaching by comparison which present themselves in the Old Testament; to suggest the study of certain striking passages, which are usually too apt to be overlooked and to bring out - what in these days it is especially meces sary to dwell upon - the preparatory character (in this respect as in others) of the teaching of the older Scriptures, leading up to the perfect-revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of Jesus The mode of teaching by parables is one of great antiquity. It was, as we have already seen, practiced under the Old Testament dispensation, and appears to have been very generally afterward adopted by the rabbis even down to the time of Christ. Its advantages are obvious. Experience has demonstrated that this sort of composition is better calculated to command attention, to captivate the imagination, to affect the heart, and to make deep and lasting impressions on the memory, than the most ingenious and most elegant discourses. Besides, the very obscurity in which para bles are sometimes involved has the effect of exciting a greater degree of curiosity and interest, and of urging the mind to a more vigorous exertion of its powers, than any other mode of instruction. There is some thing for the understanding to work upon, and when the concealed meaning is at length elicited, we are apt to value ourselves on the discovery, as the effect of our own penetration and discernment, and for that very rea son to pay more regard to the moral it conveys. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables: Read in the Light of the Present Day Dr. Guthrie was born at Brechin, in Forfarshire, July 12, 1803, and was a younger son of the late Mr. David Guthrie, merchant and banker in that ancient city. The family was one of great respectability and considerable antiquity, having been connected with Brechin for more than two hundred years. With one or two short intervals the office of Provost has been held in succession by five members of the family, the present occupant being John Guthrie, M.D., Dr. Guthrie's nephew. It is probable, but not certain, that Dr. Guthrie was a lineal descendant of the well-known Rev. William Guthrie, author of the "Trial of a Saving Interest in Christ," who was cousin of James Guthrie, the martyr. At the very least he was a kinsman of both, and Dr. Guthrie used to refer with pride to his connection with the martyr, who was not only, like himself, a Forfarshire man, but connected with the town of Brechin, having been owner of a small estate in its immediate neighbourhood. Alexander, one of Dr. Guthrie's elder brothers, was a medical man, who enjoyed a large practice and no small local reputation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Parables IN the following pages an attempt is made to present a faithful exposition and interpretation of what I regard as the Old Testament Parables. The first chapter explains how the list of Parables has been compiled. At no stage of the study are their possibilities of Gospel interpretation or evangelical application overlooked. Not enough is it for us to know their meaning in their own day; we must ask what message, if any, they had for Jesus in whose hands even the dross of the Old Testament was, as Harnack says, changed into gold; its hidden treasures were brought forth but most of all, we must learn their possible value to ourselves in an age when the Old Testament begins to live anew and with an ever-increasing appeal. Acknowledgment of quotations and references has been rendered in the text, but upon a subject whose literature is distinguished by its paucity I have been a grateful gleaner in many fields of Whatever seemed apposite and illuminating. The translations which preface each parable have been construed from a careful reading and com parison of the Septuagint, the Massoretic Hebrew Text and various English translations. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of Jesus: A Methodical Exposition Accordingly, the idea of the parable may in the first instance be generally defined to this effect: A narrative moving within the sphere of physical or human life, not professing to communicate an event which really tools place, but expressly imagined for the purpose of representing in pictorial figure a truth belonging to the sphere of religion, and therefore referring to the relation of man or mankind to God. Their own history showed that He was not the God of the Hebrews only but the God of the Gentiles also; and the King dom which their prophets foretold was not a Hebrew Kingdom only but a world Kingdom. And all they in the Synagogue says the sacred historian, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath, and rose up and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him'down headlong, but he passing through the midst of them went his way. Ever after Jesus spoke of the Kingdom of God in parables that seeing they might see and not perceive. He veiled the truth which unveiled had been rejected with such wrath, and he did so that they might listen to him without perceiving the truth to which they would refuse to listen if they did perceive it, and that so he might conduct them to his predetermined destination while they did not even know that they were on the jour. To the writer of this volume, as the land of his birth and residence during youth, such aspects of the Parables naturally would be quite familiar. This fact accounts for the personal style adopted in the composition of these pages, as affording the simplest method in demonstrating the frequent relations of the Parables to the scenes and surroundings in which they were first delivered. It was intended to dedicate this volume to the writer's father, the Rev. William McClure Thomson, D.D., author of "The Land and the Book," a work widely known to the religious public, but before it was completed he was called this year to his rest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Parables of Safed the Sage The brief chapters which make up this book have appeared in successive issues of the advance during recent months. They are a literary recreation, and something more; for they have a serious purpose. They were begun with little thought that they would be continued more than a few weeks, but as readers of the advance appeared to like them, and other papers copied them, they have continued to appear. The first one was written while the writer, accompanied by his wife, was making a tour of the Mississippi River in the spring of 1915. The manner in which the mate of the boat addressed the col ored deckhands afforded some food for thought. The parable does not reproduce the mate's language precisely, but the meaning and intent are preserved. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For in neither is it God who speaks, nor yet messengers of his, delivering his counsel; but men, and from an earthly standing-point, not a heavenly. Jotham will teach the men of Shechem their folly, not their sin, in making Abimelech king over them; the fable never lifting itself to the rebuke of sin, as it is sin - this lesson lies outside of its sphere - but only in so far as it is also folly. And Jehoash, in the same way, would make Amaziah see his presumption and pride, in challenging a mightier to the con ict; not thereby teaching him any moral lesson, but Only giving evidence in the fable which he uttered, that his own pride was ofiended by the challenge of the Jewish king.
