Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the result of a study begun in 1995 of the panel paintings of Masolino and Masaccio. A team from the Opificio delle Pietre Dure, Italy, joined by colleagues from the National Gallery in London and the Philadelphia Museum of Art visited museums in Europe and the United States that own paintings by these two Renaissance masters. This research, supported by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, investigated the painting technique of the artists in ways that even a few years before would not have been possible. The study has led to a greater understanding of the nature of the collaboration of the two artists and the chronology of their work. Fine examples of Masaccio underdrawing have been revealed, as well as Masolino's innovative use of oil mediums. The Panel Paintings of Masolino and Masaccio includes an introduction by Carl Brandon Strelke summarising the results and reviewing the usefulness of laboratory research for art history. A major essay by Roberto Bellucci and Cecilia Frosinini int

Book excerpt: Ranked by many scholars as the greatest master of early Italian Renaissance painting, Masaccio (1401-1428) was the first artist to use effects of light to create three-dimensional images on a two-dimensional plane. This achievement, revolutionary in Masaccio's day, is one of the painter's significant contributions to art history. This book explores Masaccio's accomplishment as epitomized by the multipaneled painting of which theSaint Andrewpanel is thought to have once formed a part: the Pisa Altarpiece, one of the truly great polyptychs in the history of Italian Renaissance art, produced in 1426 for a chapel in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine, Pisa. The text discusses Masaccio's short life and illustrious career; the commission for the altarpiece; its patron and program; the painting's original location; and the role that the church friars played in the actual commission. Finally, after examining the polyptych's individual panels, the book traces their subsequent history and recounts how art historians came to identify them.

Book excerpt: The first great artist of the Quattrocento period of the Italian Renaissance, Masaccio would have an incredible impact on the course of Western art, in spite of his untimely death at the age of twenty-six. He is noted for his skill in imitating nature, recreating lifelike figures and his unprecedented use of chiaroscuro and three-dimensionality. Preparing the way for Leonardo and Michelangelo, Masaccio transformed the direction of Italian painting, moving it away from the idealisations of Gothic art and favouring the depiction of a more profound, natural and humanist world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masolino da Panicale is a study of the life and works of the early fifteenth-century Florentine artist (active 1423-35), who is best known for his collaboration with Masaccio on the frescos of the Brancacci Chapel of Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence, restored to their original brilliance in 1983-88. This book fills a serious gap in the literature on Italian Renaissance art. Although there have been numerous, recent contributions to the study of Masolino, a detailed monograph has been lacking. Perri Lee Roberts discusses the nature of Masolino's and Masaccio's collaboration, and their styles. She includes up-to-date information about the newly-cleaned frescos in the Brancacci Chapel and other works by Masolino, a detailed analysis of his works in chronological order, a discussion of his patrons, and an evaluation of his place in the history of Early Renaissance painting. Two appendices contain all the known documents concerning Masolino, and a catalogue raisonne of his accepted, related, and rejected works.

Book excerpt: An exploration of ways of looking in Renaissance Florence, where works of art were part of a complex process of social exchange Renaissance Florence, of endless fascination for the beauty of its art and architecture, is no less intriguing for its dynamic political, economic, and social life. In this book Patricia Lee Rubin crosses the boundaries of all these areas to arrive at an original and comprehensive view of the place of images in Florentine society. The author asks an array of questions: Why were works of art made? Who were the artists who made them, and who commissioned them? How did they look, and how were they looked at? She demonstrates that the answers to such questions illuminate the contexts in which works of art were created, and how they were valued and viewed. Rubin seeks out the meeting places of meaning in churches, in palaces, in piazzas--places of exchange where identities were taken on and transformed, often with the mediation of images. She concentrates on questions of vision and visuality, on "seeing and being seen." With a blend of exceptional illustrations; close analyses of sacred and secular paintings by artists including Fra Angelico, Fra Filippo Lippi, Filippino Lippi, and Botticelli; and wide-ranging bibliographic essays, the book shines new light on fifteenth-century Florence, a special place that made beauty one of its defining features.

Book excerpt: Andrew Ladis is Franklin Professor of Art History at the University of Georgia. Over the course of the last twenty years he has written extensively on Italian art. In addition to books on Taddeo Gaddi and on the Brancacci Chapel, he has made notable contributions to the study of early Italian painting and sculpture with essays on such figures as Giovanni Pisano, Giotto, Jacopo del Casentino, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, and Niccolo di Tommaso. But the range of his interests, made apparent by this collection, extends far beyond fourteenth-century Florence and Siena to encompass Tuscan painting of the fifteenth century, Renaissance maiolica, the writings of Giorgio Vasari, biography, and modern historiography. Further, the assembled essays and book reviews embrace a wide array of art historical problems, such as connoisseurship, patronage, workshop procedure, and the relationship between form and meaning. Of particular note is a major interpretive essay on one of the key monuments of the Renaissance, the mural decoration of the Brancacci Chapel painted by Masaccio, Masolino, and Filippino Lippi. Appearing here in revised form, this study is newly accompanied by a copious number of illustrations, including some never before published.
