Younger met up with Jesse James in 1866. The James and Younger families cooperated in a series of bank and train robberies over the next decade that led to a feeling of invincibility. Cole and his younger brothers were captured, tried, and sentenced to life in the Minnesota State Penitentiary. But even a life sentence could not keep Younger in prison. Despite a career that included thirty wounds, battles with Pinkerton detectives and Yankees, an affair with outlaw Belle Starr, and a near-fatal confrontation with Jesse James, Cole Younger survived to become a living legend in his home state of Missouri. He died peacefully, a free man.

It is therefore my purpose to give an authentic and absolutely correct history of the lives of the "Younger Brothers," in order that I may, if possible, counteract in some measure at least, the harm that has been done my brothers and myself, by the blood and thunder accounts of misdeeds, with which relentless sensationalists have charged us, but which have not even the suggestion of truth about them, though doubtless they have had everything to do with coloring public opinion. In this account I propose to set out the little good that was in my life, at the same time not withholding in any way the bad, with the hope of setting right before the world a family name once honored, but which has suffered disgrace by being charged with more evil deeds than were ever its rightful share.

As a youth, we played cowboys and Indians and took turns being Wyatt Earp chasing Jesse James. I never outgrew my love of westerns and the allure of cowboys and outlaws. Not that many years removed from the era of the western outlaw, I allowed my imagination to bring me to the banks and hideouts of men who were merely opponents of the sheriff's. That imagination put me in Thomas Coleman Younger's place as he opposed lawmen and lawbreakers. General Order No. 11, the Drake Constitution, and the assimilation of the Confederate soldier and Bushwhacker during reconstruction in Missouri was very unpleasant for the vanquished. Some of these laws were designed to punish the opponents of the Union and not to reunite the nation. I have an opinion, but it is up to you to decide whether Cole Younger was an unwiting or willing outlaw.
