Book excerpt: Although over 40 years have passed since Jacobs (1945) convincingly established the basic radial pattern of residual growth stress in growing trees, yet this phenomenon is still not widely appreciated in wood science and technology circles. This is in spite of the fact that the presence of these stresses of sizeable magnitudes has long been recognized as a primary cause of shakes and splits in logs as well as the warping of lumber sawn in the green condition. The presentation of the subject of growth stresses in trees presents some special problems due to the wide range of specialists who potentially might have an interest in the subject. For example, tree physiologists interested in questions such as the relation of mechanical stress to stem taper and the role of reaction wood and gravity forces in determining tree crown form encounter growth stress models. Silvi culturists interested in the relation ofthinning practices to wood quality find that wood properties are correlated with growth stress levels which are in turn significantly changed by cutting practices. Wood techno logists interested in the relation of residual growth stress gradients in green logs to the dimensional quality of sawn and seasoned lumber are forced to take a more quantitative approach to the effect of growth stresses than might have been the case in the past.

Book Synopsis Stability and Vibrations of Thin-Walled Composite Structures by : Haim Abramovich
Download or read book Stability and Vibrations of Thin-Walled Composite Structures written by Haim Abramovich and published by Woodhead Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-29 with total page 772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability and Vibrations of Thin-Walled Composite Structures presents engineering and academic knowledge on the stability (buckling and post buckling) and vibrations of thin walled composite structures like columns, plates, and stringer stiffened plates and shells, which form the basic structures of the aeronautical and space sectors. Currently, this knowledge is dispersed in several books and manuscripts, covering all aspects of composite materials. The book enables both engineers and academics to locate valuable, up-to-date knowledge on buckling and vibrations, be it analytical or experimental, and use it for calculations or comparisons. The book is also useful as a textbook for advanced-level graduate courses. - Presents a unified, systematic, detailed and comprehensive overview of the topic - Contains contributions from leading experts in the field - Includes a dedicated section on testing and experimental results

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers contained herein were presented at the Third International Conference on Composite Structures (ICCS/3) held at Paisley College of Technology, Paisley, Scotland, in September 1985. The Conference was organised and sponsored by Paisley College of Technology. It was co sponsored by the Scottish Development Agency, the National Engineering Laboratory, the USAF European Office of Aerospace Research and Development, and the US Army Research, Development and Standard isation Group-UK. It forms a natural and ongoing progression from the highly successful First and Second International Conferences on Composite Structures (ICCS/l and ICCS/2) held at Paisley in 1981 and 1983, respectively. To label composites as rather specialised, sophisticated, space-age structural materials would be to underestimate greatly their wider industrial potential. It is unquestionably true that they will play an increasingly dominant, if not decisive, role in aerospace engineering. Indeed a future aircraft industry without composites as the prime structural materials is inconceivable. However, in an energy-conscious world the high specific weights and stiffnesses of composites make them an attractive proposition in every sphere of transportation engineering. This fact is soundly underlined in one of the Plenary papers contained herein and in one of the sessions devoted to this subject. I t would also be a considerable mistake to interpret composites as simply lightweight alternatives to conventional metallic structural materials.
Book Synopsis General Instability of Orthotropically Stiffened Cylinders by : Roger Milligan
Download or read book General Instability of Orthotropically Stiffened Cylinders written by Roger Milligan and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general applicability of orthotropic stability theory to aerospace shell structures was examined experimentally. For this purpose a series of careful experiments were performed on orthotropically stiffened cylinders designed to fail in the elastic general instability mode under three separate loading conditions: axial compression, torsion and hydrostatic pressure. Experimental results obtained during the program verified that for all loading conditions considered linear orthotropic theory results in accurate predictions of cylinder strength. As a result of observed discrepancies between experiment and previously existing theory for longitudinally stiffened cylinders under axial compression, theoretical studies were initiated which resulted in the discovery of a new asymmetric failure mode for this cylinder configuration. Based on this new failure mode, good correlation between experiment and theory was obtained except when the longitudinal stiffened cylinder configurations approached that corresponding to an isotropic cylinder. Other theoretical investigations performed during the program established that cylinder boundary conditions have a pronounced effect on the buckling strength of orthotropic cylinders under hydrostatic pressure loading.
Book Synopsis General Instability of Orthotropically Stiffened Cylinders by : C. Lakshmikantham
Download or read book General Instability of Orthotropically Stiffened Cylinders written by C. Lakshmikantham and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of a general program to determine the applicability of linear orthotropic theory to the design of cylindrical shells under various loading conditions, a theoretical and experimental investigation was performed on the general instability of orthotropic cylinders under bending and combined axial compression and bending loading. Based on a simple approximation for the asymmetric buckling pattern, theoretical results suitable for design use were obtained for the buckling of orthotropic cylinders for both bending and combined loading conditions. It was shown that the buckling stress for orthotropic cylinders under bending or axial compression loading are equal which agrees with previous results for isotropic cylinders. Theoretical results were evaluated by means of a series of careful experiments performed on orthotropically stiffened cylinders designed to fail in the elastic general instability mode. For both bending loading and the combined axial and bending loading condition, experimental results were in good agreement with the theory.
