The body about which this book treats always calls itself the Orthodox Eastern Church, and in the East we call them Orthodox and they call us Catholics (unless when they mean to be rude), and no one thinks for a moment that either uses these names except as technical terms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organization of the Orthodox Eastern Churches The object of this pamphlet is to provide a convenient outline, for reference purposes, of the Constitutions of the various autonomous Churches which are included in the Holy Orthodox Eastern Church. No attempt has been made to give any historical account of these Churches, but a few general remarks may not be out of place here. The order of precedence at present observed amongst them is as follows: 1, Constantinople; 2, Alexandria; 3, Antioch; 4, Jerusalem; 5, Russia; 6, Cyprus; 7, Karlowitz; 8, Sinai; 9, Montenegro; 10, Greece; 11, Hermannstadt; 12, Bukowina and Dalmatia; 13, Servia; 14, Roumania; 15, Bulgaria. But in any General Council the heads of each of these Churches would have an equal vote. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mother of All Churches: A Brief and Comprehensive Handbook of the Holy Eastern Orthodox Church If we wish to have a true view of Church history and doctrine, that we may see things in their true pro portion and perspective, we must not overlook the Mother of all the Churches. And if this be true of any student of Christianity, it is still more important that an English Churchman, who would see the origins and trace the growth of his own branch Of the Church, should have some knowledge of the Eastern Church. This friendly guide provides a comprehensive introduction to Orthodoxy, but with a twist: readers learn by making a series of visits to a fictitious church, and get to know the faith as new Christians did for most of history, by immersion. Mathews-Green provides commentary and explanations on everything from how to “venerate” an icon, the Orthodox understanding of the atonement, to the Lenten significance of tofu. It’s the perfect book for inquirers and newcomers, but even readers who have been Orthodox all their lives say they learned things they never knew before. Enjoyable, easy-to-read, and leavened with humor, Welcome to the Orthodox Church is a gracious guide to the ancient faith of the Christian East.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of the Eastern Church: With an Introduction on the Study of Ecclesiastical HistoryInregardto therelationof Christianitytotheother mhgionsoftheeastwhichmustbeconsidcredasone of the most important branches of the subject in connec tion with the fortunes of Eastern Christendom, I have been restrained, by my personal ignorance of the languages and customs of most of those countries, from offering more than a few general remarks on the one most directly connected with the Christian Church and the Eastern branch of it, nan'rely, Mahometanism. But, if I may be permitted to refer to the labours of the eminent scholar who has already done so much for elucidating in this country the nature of Oriental religions, it is to be hoped that Professor Max Muller may be induced to give us the benefit of his genius and learning in drawing forth the mutual relations of the religionsofasiaandthechristianfaithtoeachother, in meir past history and in their future prospects.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the History of the Eastern Church In February 1856, when Arthur Penrhyn Stanley had been Canon of Canterbury for nearly five years, he had published his Memorials of Canterbury (1854), a Commentary on the Epistles to the Corinthians (1855), and had just completed his Sinai and Palestine, the fruit of his travels in those regions in 1852-53. And accordingly we find him writing to his friend Hugh Pearson to say that the remaining work of his life would be either a history of the chosen people, or a history of early Christianity, beginning from the earliest times and continuing as late as possible. He was enabled to carry out both these projects in a way which he could not have foreseen at the time of writing; for in December of the same year he was appointed Regius Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Oxford. His biographer tells us that on the morning after he had accepted the appointment he burst into his mother's room exclaiming, "I have settled my first course. I shall begin with Abraham; he is the true beginning of ecclesiastical history." A few days later he is writing again to Pearson outlining the plan that was afterwards matured in the Lectures on the Eastern Church. In February 1857, he delivered, with striking success, as his inaugural course, the lectures comprised under the title "Introduction" in this volume. They deal respectively with the "province," the "methods," and the "advantages" of the study of Church History, and there can be no better introduction to the subject for any student than these three discourses taken together with Bishop Collins's little hand-book, and an article by Dr. Harnack in The Contemporary Review for August 1886. We shall see also that these lectures are no less significant of Stanley himself than helpful to his readers. In the long vacation of 1857 - just fifty years ago - Stanley set out from Canterbury (where he continued to reside until a death in February 1858 placed at his disposal a canonry in Christ Church, Oxford), together with two young comrades and a courier named Djarlieb, whose performance did not equal his promise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Eastern Empire IT has Often been said that the Eastern Church has no history independently Of the: State; and this is so far true, that during long periods the annals of that Com munion have little else to show than lists of patriarchs. At the same time, at certain intervals episodes of great interest and importance occur, and from first to last the influence of the Church on the social and religious life of the Eastern Empire is a subject well worthy of study. TO relate, however briefly, those episodes, and to trace the working of that influence, is the object of the pre sent volume. The early period, that Of the first four General Councils, belongs. To the history of the Church at large, and therefore is only touched upon here as far as subsequent events depended upon it; it is the later, or Byzantine, age of the Eastern Church which we have especially to consider.
