Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Present-day Orissa is a unique blend of the ancient and the modern. Alluring images of elegant Odissi dancers in all their bejewelled finery, sparkling silver filigree ornaments, suave Sambalpuri sarees, colourful applique wall-hangings, the breathtakingly beautiful beaches and coastline, the flora and fauna, fairs and festivals, and above all, the temple art and architecture, have all contributed to the state's reputation as a tourists' paradise, besides its image as an important pilgrimage centre. Of late, the commercial and industrialization processes initiated in this state have been welcomed by investors from other parts of the country and abroad. The culinary tradition of Orissa, its unique vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisine, the rice preparations and the sweets, is the subject of this compilation. The authors have painstakingly chronicled the variety that the different regions in the state boast of, with their own distinct tastes. Although the tasty and nutritious Oriya cuisine still retains its traditional flavours, it has also moved with the times. Cross-cultural influences have seeped in, and in the modern Oriya kitchen, the mortar and pestle co-exist with the mixi and the microwave oven. This presentation of the culinary wonders from Orissa is enriched with numerous nuggets encapsulating the state's rich cultural heritage.

Book excerpt: What makes Darjeeling tea, Pashmina shawl, Monsooned Malabar Arabica coffee and Chanderi saree special? Why is it that some goods derive their uniqueness through their inherent linkage to a place? In a pioneering study, this book explores this intriguing question in the Indian context across 199 registered goods with geographical indications, linked with their place of origin. It argues that the origin of these goods is attributed to a distinctive ecology that brews in a particular place. The attributes of their origin further endorse their unique geographical indications through legal channels. Drawing from a variety of disciplines including geography, history, sociology, handicrafts, paintings, and textiles, the author also examines the Geographical Indications Act of 1999, and shows how it has created a scope to identify, register and protect those goods, be they natural, agricultural, or manufactured. The work presents a new perspective on the indigenous diversities and offers an original understanding of the geography and history of India. Lucid and accessible, with several illustrative maps, this book will be useful to scholars and researchers in the social sciences, environmental studies, development studies, law, trade and history.

Book Synopsis Indian Ikat Textiles by : Rosemary Crill
Download or read book Indian Ikat Textiles written by Rosemary Crill and published by V&a Publications. This book was released on 1998 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals in depth with Indian textiles in the ikat technique. It is based on the Victoria and Albert Museum's collection of ikats from all over India, many of which date from the mid-19th century, and represent aspects of weaving and dyeing that no longer survive in their places of origin. A complex form of resist-dyeing in which threads are patterned before weaving, ikat has been used in India since at least the early centuries AD. Over 100 pieces are discussed and illustrated, from the satin-weave mashurs of South India and the silk patola from Gujarat, to simple cotton saris from Orissa and Tamil Nadu and subtly-coloured rumals from Andhra Pradesh. Further sections explore the influence of Indian ikat on the textile traditions of other areas, including South-East Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
