Book excerpt: The Origins of Prebiological Systems and of their Molecular Matrices covers the proceedings of the conference conducted at Wakulla Springs, Florida on 27-30 October 1963 under the Auspices of the Institute for Space Biosciences, the Florida State University, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The publication focuses on the processes, methodologies, and assumptions on the origin of life, as well as evolution, molecular matrices, geochemistry, and hydrogenation. The selection first offers information on random polymers as a matrix for chemical evolution, the folly of probability, and molecular matrices for living systems. Discussions focus on ultraviolet photoproduction of polymers, melanin as a random polymer, and random polymer on the primitive earth. The book then takes a look at the aspects of the geochemistry of amino acids; asymmetric hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds; and stages and mechanisms of prebiological organic synthesis. The publication tackles thermal synthesis of amino acids from a hypothetically primitive terrestrial atmosphere and primordial ultraviolet synthesis of nucleoside phosphates. The text also ponders on the probable synthesis of porphine-like substances during chemical evolution; thermal polycondensation of free amino acids with polyphosphoric acid; and random polycondensation of sugars. The selection is highly recommended for readers interested in the origins of prebiological systems.

Book excerpt: For the first time in human history, developments in many branches of science provide us with an opportunity of formula ting a comprehensive picture of the universe from its beginning to the present time. It is an awesome reflection that the carbon in our bodies is the very carbon which was generated during the birth of a star. There is a perceptible continuum through the billions of years which can be revealed by the study of chemistry. Studies in nucleosynthesis have related the origin of the elements to the life history of the stars. The chemical elements we find on earth, HYdrogen, Carbon, Oxygen, and Nitrogen, were created in astronomical processes that took place in the past, and these elements are not spread throughout space in the form of stars and galaxies. Radioastronomers have discovered a vast array of organic molecules in the interstellar medium which have a bearing on prebiological chemical processes. Many of the molecules found so far contain the four elements, C, N, 0, H. Except for the chem ically unreactive He, these four elements are the most abundant in the galaxy. The origin of polyatomic interstellar molecules is an unresolved problem. While we can explain the formation of some diatomic molecules as due to two atom collisions, it is much more difficult to form polyatomic molecules by collisions between diatomic molecules and atoms. There may be other produc tion mechanisms at work such as reactions taking place on the surface of interstellar dust grains.

Book excerpt: Research of the origins of life in connection with a marine environment started at the end of the seventies, when the `black smokers' in the Pacific were discovered and the Red Sea deep hydrothermal brines were found to be a fruitful environment for abiotic synthesis of life precursors. For a while this research was categorised under the heading `chemistry', but in less than a decade the topic became fully integrated into the science of 'oceanography'. The Scientific Committee on Oceanographic Research (SCOR) initiated Working Group 91: Chemical Evolution and Origin of Life in Marine Hydrothermal Systems'. This volume contains the final report of this working group.

Book excerpt: Market: Those in economics, especially thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, cybernetics, information theory, resource use, and evolutionary economic behavior. This book presents an innovative and challenging look at evolution on several scales, from the earth and its geology and chemistry to living organisms to social and economic systems. Applying the principles of thermodynamics and the concepts of information gathering and self- organization, the author characterizes the direction of evolution in each case as an accumulation of "distinguishability" information--a type of universal knowledge.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life Sciences and Space Research, Volume XVIII is a collection of articles on space biology. The book describes the presence of organic molecules found in interstellar space, comets, and meteorites. The text also addresses the role of comets in giving rise to new studies in cometary chemistry, as the source of plasma, or as supplying the mechanism for the formation of amino acids, glycine, and guanine. One paper addresses the possibility of life on the planet Mars touching on chemical reactions of nutrient compound decay and other physio-chemical changes. The book also notes the contribution of cometary volatiles to the study of the primitive earth plus the possible role of metal ions and clays in prebiotic chemistry. Other papers discuss radiation biology concerning both radiobiological results from experiments done in spaceflight and ground laboratories such as the degeneration of rabbit tissues after heavy irradiation. The book then evaluates gravitational biology, including topics such as physiological reactions during acute adaptation to reduced gravity; land plant evolution and gravity; and the development of Polyporus brumalis basidomycete, a kind of fungi, in conditions of weightlessness. Molecular biologists, space engineers, biologists, meteorologists, and genetic engineers will find this book highly valuable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book surveys the models for the origin of life and presents a new model starting with shaped droplets and ending with life as polygonal Archaea; it collects the most published micrographs of Archaea (discovered only in 1977), which support this conclusion, and thus provides the first visual survey of Archaea. Origin of Life via Archaea’s purpose is to add a new hypothesis on what are called “shaped droplets”, as the starting point, for flat, polygonal Archaea, supporting the Vesicles First hypothesis. The book contains over 6000 distinct references and micrographs of 440 extant species of Archaea, 41% of which exhibit polygonal phenotypes. It surveys the intellectual battleground of the many ideas of the origin of life on earth, chemical equilibrium, autocatalysis, and biotic polymers. This book contains 17 chapters, some coauthored, on a wide range of topics on the origin of life, including Archaea’s origin, patterns, and species. It shows how various aspects of the origin of life may have occurred at chemical equilibrium, not requiring an energy source, contrary to the general assumption. For the reader’s value, its compendium of Archaea micrographs might also serve many other interesting questions about Archaea. One chapter presents a theory for the shape of flat, polygonal Archaea in terms of the energetics at the surface, edges and corners of the S-layer. Another shows how membrane peptides may have originated. The book also includes a large table of most extant Archaea, that is searchable in the electronic version. It ends with a chapter on problems needing further research. Audience This book will be used by astrobiologists, origin of life biologists, physicists of small systems, geologists, biochemists, theoretical and vesicle chemists.
