Book excerpt: A potential target for future unconventional hydrocarbon exploration including enhanced recovery of natural gas and CO2 sequestration, the lower Huron Shale Member of the Ohio Shale (Devonian) (`lower Huron’) is one of the most regionally extensive Devonian mudrocks in the Appalachian Basin. Understanding the paleodepositional conditions that aided in the preservation of organic matter in this unit is critical for assessing its viability as a potential hydrocarbon play. Multiple analyses were conducted on representative lithologies at a sampling frequency (n=16) of approximately every 7.8 ft (2.4 m) from a core located in Green Township, Scioto County, Ohio. Measurements include a high-resolution spectral gamma core scan of the entire lower Huron interval, and transmitted and reflected light and SEM imagery of thin sections. 13C values of the organic carbon and total organic carbon (TOC) measurements were taken on core subsamples (n=13), whereas powdered sample splits were utilized to determine mineral weight percent (from XRD measurements) and major and minor trace elements (from XRF/ICP-MS measurements). Mercury intrusion capillary pressure porosimetry was also used to determine porosity from whole-rock core fragments (n=7). Based on previously published data, 13Corganic values average -29.9 ± 1.13 and are indicative of distal marine facies. Lithologies are dominated by organic-rich laminated shale, and are composed predominantly of quartz, illite, mica, and significant amounts of preserved organic material inferred to have been derived from terrestrial plants and varied marine prokaryotes and eukaryotes. TOC and porosity average 6.7 ± 1.25 and 2.7 ± 0.69 percent, respectively, across the 124 ft (38 m) lower Huron interval. Chem-stratigraphy of trace-element redox proxies (V/V+Ni, V/Cr, Ni/Co) of both the study core and additional published datasets suggest sediment accumulation occurred under a range of oxic to dysoxic and even euxinic conditions in the regional study area, and across several mineralogically distinct lithotypes. Furthermore, significant trends in the relative degree of anoxia are positively correlated to existing published data acquired from equivalent strata located 50 mi (80 km) from the studied core, located in modern-day north central Kentucky and Washington, Ross, and Lorain Counties in Ohio. Organic matter deposition was influenced by fluctuations in siliciclastic flux caused by falling seal-level during regressive episodes and migrating depocenters, and by times of high productivity fueled by increased nutrient-rich terrigenous influx. Rapidly deposited material and subsequent O2 depletion appear to be the main drivers of organic matter preservation, which occurred primarily under alternating sub-oxic to euxinic conditions.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Despite the interest in organic-rich sediments (ORS), few studies have focused on the details of the transition between environments of low ORS to high ORS. This study focused on the transition between the Devonian non-organic-rich Olentangy Shale to the overlying organic-rich Ohio Shale in the northern Appalachian Basin. This study consisted of two parts, an in-depth lithofacies analysis and geochemical analysis on a core (2739) located in Erie County in northcentral Ohio. A total of 11 lithofacies and five lithofacies assemblages were identified in the Olentangy Shale and Ohio Shale. Event layers, such as hyperpycnites, are common in the dark colored Huron Shale Member and Cleveland Shale Member of the Ohio Shale. Turbidites are found throughout the Ohio Shale and tempestites are found at the base of the Cleveland Shale Member. A total of 30 samples were collected from the core, 10 of which were used to create thin sections to aid in interpreting the environmental changes between the Olentangy Shale and Ohio Shale. Thin section analysis showed small-scale features, such as basal erosion, inverse and normal grading, and mineral replacement. Samples collected for geochemical analysis were studied for total organic carbon (TOC), mineralogy by X-ray diffraction (XRD), element concentrations by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and trace elements by inductively-coupled plasma emission spectrometry-mass spectrometry (ICPES-MS). In the transition from the gray Olentangy Shale to black Huron Shale Member, bottom waters became anoxic, TOC increased, and hyperpycnites increased. In the transition from the black Huron Shale Member to the gray Chagrin Shale Member, bottom waters became oxic, TOC decreased, and hyperpycnites decreased. In the transition between the gray Chagrin Shale Member and black Cleveland Shale Member, bottom waters became anoxic, TOC increased, and hyperpycnites increased. In summary, the data suggests that the gray shales were deposited under oxic bottom waters and the black shales were deposited under anoxic bottom waters. In addition, the organic matter in the Devonian Shales is terrestrial sourced. One way of reconciling these observations is to attribute sediment TOC values to sediment dynamics (distributary lobe avulsion) of the Catskill Delta. Time intervals of increased terrestrial organic matter input would result both in high input rates and water column oxygen stress, similar to the "dead zones" of many modern deltas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shales and mudstones are the most poorly understood sedimentary rock type. They comprise approximately two thirds of the stratigraphic column and contain the bulk of recorded earth history. In the future, understanding shales will be crucial for a wide variety of studies. Yet, getting a balanced perspective of research on these fascinating rocks is difficult because it is dispersed over so many subdisciplines. The two volumes of this book present up to date research on a wide range of topics in shale geology, and were assembled with the goal to ease access to this engaging field of research. Chapter introductions were written by experts in their field, and are intended to define the state of the art, to provide access to pertinent literature, and to set the stage for the corresponding research papers. Volume I covers basin-scale analysis, sedimentology and paleontology of shales. Volume II supplements this perspective with detailed treatments of petrography, burial history, petrophysics, geochemistry, and economic aspects of shales. The broad coverage of topics should make this book a valuable source of information for those that want to keep informed about current developments in shale research, and a source of inspiration for those interested to enter this exciting field of study.
