When the contest began, Mexico owned the south-western portion of North America as far north as 42 - the northern boundary of California; and Russia owned Alaska and a portion of the mainland, which both Great Britain and the United States in 1824 recognized as extending as far south as 54 40'. Originally, therefore, the contest involved the question as to how the territory west of the Rocky Mountains between Russia on the north and Mexico on the south should be divided between the United States and Great Britain. The entire region was known as The Oregon Country. The area embraced 443,871 square miles of territory, a territory considerably larger than the whole Atlantic Coast east of the Appalachian Mountains, a territory whose climate and whose mineral and agricultural resources make its natural value as great as that of any equal amount of territory in eastern North America or western Europe. Moreover, as this territory lies within the Pacific Basin - the largest and the last great world basin to be developed - probably its political and strategic value eventually will become great, just as coastal lands in the Atlantic Basin and in the Mediterranean Basin are of great importance to-day. The subject is of wide interest; the material is abundant, and it has long been available; for of the great wealth of recently discovered material that compels the rewriting of much of the history of the Far West, little has been added to the early documentation of the Trail. Historical essays, such as Professor F. G. Young's The Oregon Trail, Mr. W. E. Connelley's "National Aspects of the Old Oregon Trail" and H. M. Chittenden's brief and compact sketch in The American Fur Trade of the Far West, have outlined the subject; and more recently has appeared the excellent study of some of its phases, Opening a Highway to the Pacific, 1838- 1846, by Mr. James Christy Bell, Jr.; but the writing of an extended history with the Trail as its central theme has somehow been neglected. In 1848 Francis Parkman published The Oregon and California Trail. It is a book that has had its hundreds of thousands of readers, and doubtless will always be popular. After some hours of descent we came to Martin's rapid, where a Canadian, so called, together with his son, found a watery grave. Its roar is deafening, and the agitation of the water resembles that of a raging sea-storm. The whole bed of the river is here strewed with immense fragments of rocks. Guided by an expert Iroquois pilot, and aided with ten oars, the boat darted over its boisterous surface, dancing-like and leaping from wave to wave, with the rapidity of lightning. At sunset we were at the Dalle of the Dead. (Dalle is an old French word, meaning a trough, and the name is given by the Canadian voya-geurs to all contracted running waters, hemmed in by walls of rocks.) Here, in 1838, twelve unfortunate travellers were buried in the river.
