Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oregon Missions, the Story of How the Line Was Run Between, Canada and the United States The aim of this book is to portray the deeds which determined the boundary line between Great Britain and the United States from the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean. When the contest began, Mexico owned the south-western portion of North America as far north as 42 - the northern boundary of California; and Russia owned Alaska and a portion of the mainland, which both Great Britain and the United States in 1824 recognized as extending as far south as 54 40'. Originally, therefore, the contest involved the question as to how the territory west of the Rocky Mountains between Russia on the north and Mexico on the south should be divided between the United States and Great Britain. The entire region was known as The Oregon Country. The area embraced 443,871 square miles of territory, a territory considerably larger than the whole Atlantic Coast east of the Appalachian Mountains, a territory whose climate and whose mineral and agricultural resources make its natural value as great as that of any equal amount of territory in eastern North America or western Europe. Moreover, as this territory lies within the Pacific Basin - the largest and the last great world basin to be developed - probably its political and strategic value eventually will become great, just as coastal lands in the Atlantic Basin and in the Mediterranean Basin are of great importance to-day. Book excerpt: Four newlywed couples, along with one single man, were sent to Oregon in 1838 to reinforce the two-year-old mission established by Marcus Whitman and Henry Spalding. These reinforcements were to become legendary in the history of the Pacific Northwest for the incessant bickering and petty jealousies that eventually caused the deaths of Marcus and Narcissa Whitman and forced the abandonment of the mission effort. ø Uncertainty and conflict as well as willpower and endurance mark the story of the Oregon Mission and its charismatic, though contentious, missionaries. Simply getting to Oregon in the 1830s was a feat. Once they arrived, their efforts were doomed by their inability to agree on strategies for converting the Nez Percä and Spokane Indians. ø This Bison Books edition contains the very personal diary of Sarah Smith, ?the weeping one? as the Indians remembered her. When read in chronological sequence with the nearly one hundred letters written by her husband, Asa, a compelling picture of their journey to Oregon and subsequent life at the mission emerges. Other letters, documents, and biographical sketches enhance the volume.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this dissertation is to present the story of the Catholic Church in the Oregon territory from the foundation of the first missions in 1838 until the formal organization of the country into the ecclesiastical province of Oregon City, which was completed ten years later when the first provincial council was held at St. Paul, Oregon, in February 1848. The pioneer priests, Francis Norbert Blanchet and Modeste Demers, had been but a few months in the Pacific Northwest when they realized the advantages that might result to their work from the presence of a bishop in Oregon. They sent, in 1839, the first of a series of petitions to the bishop of Quebec, asking that steps be taken thus to assist them but it was not until 1842, when Father De Smet, the Jesuit missionary, added his pleadings to theirs, that the project was given serious consideration. The following year, after recommendations from Quebec and Baltimore, the Holy See established the vicariate apostolic of Oregon and appointed Father Blanchet, first vicar apostolic. Three years later, in 1846, due to representations which Blanchet made at Rome, the province of Oregon City was erected. The Holy See elevated Blanchet to the metropolitan see and named as his suffragans, his brother, Augustine Magloire Blanchet, Bishop of Walla Walla, and Modeste Demers, Bishop of Vancouver Island. Archbishop Blanchet returned to Oregon in 1847 and several months later convened the first provincial council, which studied and legislated for the needs of the new province. It is this period of early foundations and development which is discussed in these pages. ‑From the Preface
