Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ore Deposits of the United States and Canada The following pages presuppose for their apprehension some acquaintance with geology and mineralogy. The materials for them have been collected and arranged in connection with lectures on economic geology, first at Cornell University and later at the School of Mines, Columbia College. To the descriptions of others the author has endeavored to add, as far as possible, observations made by himself in travel during the last ten years. The purpose of the book is twofold, and this fact has been conscientiously kept in view. It is, on the one hand, intended to supply a condensed account of the metalliferous resources of the country, which will be readable and serviceable as a text-book and work of reference. For this reason every effort has been put forth to make the bibliography complete, so that, in cases where fuller accounts of a region are desired, the original sources may be made available in any good library. But, on the other hand, it has also been the hope and ambition of the author to treat the subject in such a way as to stimulate investigation and study of these interesting phenomena. If, by giving an extended view over the field, and by making clear what our best workers have done in late years toward explaining the puzzling yet vastly important questions of origin and formation, some encouragement may be afforded those in a position to observe and ponder, the second aim will be fulfilled. In carrying out this purpose, the best work of recent investigators on the origin and changes of rocks, especially as brought out by microscopic study, has been kept constantly in mind, and likewise in the artificial production of the ore and gangue minerals. So much unsound and foolish theorizing has been uttered and believed about ores, that too much care cannot be exercised in basing explanations on reasonable and right foundations. Book Synopsis Geology of Colorado Ore Deposits (Classic Reprint) by : Arthur Lakes
Download or read book Geology of Colorado Ore Deposits (Classic Reprint) written by Arthur Lakes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of Colorado Ore Deposits This treatise contains the substance of a series of elementary lectures delivered by the author to the students of the Colorado State School of Mines. It is published with a view of meeting some of the needs of the general public, of the ordinary miner, and of the unscientific many, rather than with any idea of offer ing original matter for the discussion of the scientific few. The materials are derived partly from the writer's own researches, and largely from the most reliable resources available to him, such as the standard text-books and the valuable published reports of the United States Geological Survey. The writer having for a time been connected with that survey, knows full well how high a value is to be attached to those reports, which must remain for all time as a standard of reference for those interested in the geological relations of the mines of Colorado. The first part of the work contains a rough sketch of general Geology, for the benefit of those who are not familiar with the terms used in this science. The sketch is further applied to the local geology of Colorado. The second part refers to the phe domena of veins and ores, and their surroundings, as illustrated by Colorado. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology of Western Ore Deposits The first and most ancient rock series, which underlies all others, and may be called the bedrock of the world, is the granitic. This is commonly assumed to be of Archean age, or to have been formed and up heaved in the earliest period of the world's existence of which we have any cognizance. This is doubtless true in the majority of cases, but there is evidence that some granites, such as those of Pike's Peak and the Cripple Creek region, were upheaved or erupted at a later date.
