Book Synopsis Towards a Dialogic Anglistics by : Werner Delanoy
Download or read book Towards a Dialogic Anglistics written by Werner Delanoy and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2007 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When one looks at the history of English Studies there has been a noticeable proliferation of research interests since the 1970s. As a result of such development, attempts have been made to create a new basis for communication and cooperation inside Anglistics and across disciplines. Making a case for a Dialogic Anglistics is such an attempt. A Dialogic Anglistics is based on a normative concept of dialogue aiming for egalitarian forms of cooperation both inside, between and across disciplines leading to the redefinition of old and creation of manifold new directions for English Studies. In the nineteen articles presented in this volume dialogic encounters are encouraged both within and between different fields within Anglistics. Furthermore, dialogic links are created with colleagues from other academic disciplines.
Book Synopsis Current Trends in Pragmatics by : Piotr Cap
Download or read book Current Trends in Pragmatics written by Piotr Cap and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume brings together twenty articles written by established linguists, language philosophers, sociologists and psychologists, sharing their academic interest in a broad and interdisciplinary field of linguistic pragmatics. The collection consists of four thematic parts: “Pragmatics and Cognition,” “The Semantics-Pragmatics Interface,” “Conversational and Text Analysis” and “Pragmatics, Social Research and Didactics.” It aims to contribute to the debate on the present-day status of pragmatics, by examining three fundamental issues. The first involves the question of the current explanatory power of pragmatics, namely, how successful is the existing apparatus of pragmatics and the basic-level parameters (theories of speech acts, relevance, implicature, presupposition, deixis, politeness, etc.) in the elucidation of various aspects of meaning. The second issue involves the methodological assistance that pragmatics might need in order to enhance its explanatory power. The third has to do with the fuzzily defined boundaries of the discipline of pragmatics and the resulting temptation for analysts to concentrate solely on its fragmented sub-domains. As the collection unfolds, these issues form a continuum which, it seems, is often a process that a linguist goes through as his or her methodological awareness deepens. Thus, the orientation of the volume towards the analyst and the analytic mind-set, as well as the attempted balance in presentation of the alternative approaches, seem the major theoretical characteristic of the book.
Download or read book Integrating Gestures written by Gale Stam and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gestures are ubiquitous and natural in our everyday life. They convey information about culture, discourse, thought, intentionality, emotion, intersubjectivity, cognition, and first and second language acquisition. Additionally, they are used by non-human primates to communicate with their peers and with humans. Consequently, the modern field of gesture studies has attracted researchers from a number of different disciplines such as anthropology, cognitive science, communication, neuroscience, psycholinguistics, primatology, psychology, robotics, sociology and semiotics. This volume presents an overview of the depth and breadth of current research in gesture. Its focus is on the interdisciplinary nature of gesture. The twenty-six chapters included in the volume are divided into six sections or themes: the nature and functions of gesture, first language development and gesture, second language effects on gesture, gesture in the classroom and in problem solving, gesture aspects of discourse and interaction, and gestural analysis of music and dance.

Book Synopsis Conceptualizations of Time by : Barbara Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk
Download or read book Conceptualizations of Time written by Barbara Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As time cannot be observed directly, it must be analyzed in terms of mental categories, which manifest themselves on various linguistic levels. In this interdisciplinary volume, novel approaches to time are proposed that consider temporality without time, on the one hand, and the coding of time in language, including sign language, and gestures, on the other. The contributions of the volume demonstrate that time is conceptualized not only in terms of space but in terms of other domains of human experience as well. Renowned specialists in the study of time, the authors of this volume investigate this fascinating topic from a variety of perspectives – philosophical, linguistic, anthropological, (neuro)psychological, and computational – demonstrating a familiarity with both classical and recent approaches to the study of time and including up-to-date corpus-based methods of study. The volume will be of interest to philosophers, linguists (including specialists in cognitive linguistics, corpus linguistics, and computational linguistics), anthropologists, (neuro)psychologists, translators, language teachers, and graduate students.

Book Synopsis A Dialogical Approach to Creativity by : Mônica Souza Neves-Pereira
Download or read book A Dialogical Approach to Creativity written by Mônica Souza Neves-Pereira and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes an epistemological and theoretical stance in investigating the phenomenon of creativity and its processes. Creativity is analyzed through the lens of cultural psychology, in which psychological processes emerge over the course of life, and can only be understood in relation to the subject’s history and life experiences. Dialogism is presented as central for the constitutive dynamics of the developing subject and the emergence of creative actions through the expression of human agency. The authors highlight Bakhtinian dialogism and its developments in the scientific field of psychology and related areas to shed new light on creativity and its processes. The authors argue this will enable a better understanding of creativity in its development and emergence, and its impact on individuals and society.
Book Synopsis I Activate You To Affect Me by : Carlos Cornejo
Download or read book I Activate You To Affect Me written by Carlos Cornejo and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of Annals of Cultural Psychology is dedicated to the affective nature of human social relationships with the environment. The chapters here included explore the historical, theoretical and practical dimensions of the concept of affectivating originally introduced by one of us (Valsiner, 1999), as a potential tool of inquiry into the affective-sensitive dimension of psychological life within a cultural-psychological framework. The concept of affectivating involves two psychological dimensions often undervalued or even obliterated from contemporary cultural psychology, namely the affective involvement and the agentivity of people in their social encounters. Through several examples --‘feeling-at-home’, silence spaces and rituals, memorials, music and poetry, among others-- we show individual’s concrete actions in mundane everyday life aim to give an affective personal sense to the world around. This focuses on the primary affective nature of human meaning construction that guides the person in one’s continuing feeling-into-the-world. At a theoretical level the notion of affectivation challenges contemporary Cultural Psychology to rescue subjectivity, not only symbolism. Affectivation propounds a return to the long, but partially forgotten, organismic tradition, represented in the history by thinkers like Wilhelm Dilthey, Jakob von Uexküll and Kurt Goldstein. Cultural psychology has to bring semiosis back to the vital background of human experience.

Book Synopsis Motion Metaphors in Music Criticism by : Nina Julich-Warpakowski
Download or read book Motion Metaphors in Music Criticism written by Nina Julich-Warpakowski and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores (1) the motivation of motion expressions in Western classical music criticism in terms of conceptual metaphors (Lakoff & Johnson, 1980, 1999) in two corpus studies, and (2) their perceived degree of metaphoricity among musicians and non-musicians in a rating study. The results show that while fundamental embodied conceptual metaphors like TIME IS MOTION certainly play a part in explaining why we speak of Western classical music as motion, it is the specific communicative setting of music criticism that determines the particular use of motion metaphors. Furthermore, the perceived metaphoricity of musical motion metaphors varies with participants’ musical background: musicians perceive musical motion expressions as more literal compared to non-musicians, showing that there are individual differences in the perception of metaphoricity.

Book Synopsis Language from the Body by : Sarah F. Taub
Download or read book Language from the Body written by Sarah F. Taub and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-26 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the role of meaning in linguistic theory? Generative linguists have severely limited the influence of meaning, claiming that language is not affected by other cognitive processes and that semantics does not influence linguistic form. Conversely, cognitivist and functionalist linguists believe that meaning pervades and motivates all levels of linguistic structure. This dispute can be resolved conclusively by evidence from signed languages. Signed languages are full of iconic linguistic items: words, inflections, and even syntactic constructions with structural similarities between their physical form and their referents' form. Iconic items can have concrete meanings and also abstract meanings through conceptual metaphors. Language from the Body rebuts the generativist linguistic theories which separate form and meaning and asserts that iconicity can only be described in a cognitivist framework where meaning can influence form.
