Book excerpt: She doesn’t want him. He doesn’t need her. Like hell... An FBI Psychics Novella Destin Mortin’s psychic gift comes with an ugly twist—she excels at tracking down violent rapists. But it’s rough on relationships. Once, her partner Caleb was her everything: filter, shield, rescuer, lover. The only man who didn’t think her a freak. Then he walked away. Destin turned her back on the FBI to work for a private agency, but now a particularly horrendous case has come up, and her boss wants her paired with only the best. For Caleb Durand, leaving Destin was an act of self-preservation. Every time she flung herself headlong into dangerous situations, every time he nursed her through soul-crushing visions, he’d died a little more inside. Now they are forced to work together one last time. Tragedy has changed them both, but Caleb knows if he lowers his shields for an instant, he won’t have an icicle’s chance in hell of resisting the temptation to lose himself in her wild power. But to catch the rapist, it’s exactly what he’ll have to do. Warning: Contains tortured souls who have lost love and pined for their missing half, a woman who can see evil, and a hot FBI agent.

Book excerpt: Through visiting the game’s players and veterans of all ages and skill levels, a writer chronicles the state of baseball in the summer of 1976. For one full baseball season in 1976, Roger Kahn returned to his favorite sport to see how it was doing and find out whether it still had the same old magic. His search led him from small college teams in rural Arkansas, whose every member hopes to make the Majors, to Houston for a look at the financial disaster of the Astros and the Astrodome, and to Los Angeles to explore the modern miracle of Walter O’Malley’s Dodgers. It brought him interviews with old friends like restaurateur Stan Musial, boat salesman Early Wynn, and the courageous baseball maverick Bill Veeck, now owner of the Chicago White Sox. He was able to observe a superb New England Class A team that plays to empty stands because of TV, and the phenomenon of baseball enthusiasm on Roberto Clemente’s Caribbean island. Finally, it gave him the chance to get to know the incomparable Johnny Bench and to spend part of the 1976 Yankees-Reds World Series in the company of the Series’ most valuable player. More than a book about baseball, A Season in the Sun, like Kahn’s classic The Boys of Summer, is a warm and affectionate evocation of small-town and big-city America. Praise for Roger Kahn “He can epitomize a player with a single swing of the pen.”—TimeMagazine “Kahn is the best baseball writer in the business.”—Stephen Jay Gould, New York Review of Books “Kahn has the almost unfair gift of easy, graceful writing.”—Boston Herald

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s a band of smart and able young men, some still in their twenties, helped Franklin D. Roosevelt transform an American nation in crisis. They were the junior officers of the New Deal. Thomas G. Corcoran, Benjamin V. Cohen, William O. Douglas, Abe Fortas, and James Rowe helped FDR build the modern Democratic Party into a progressive coalition whose command over power and ideas during the next three decades seemed politically invincible. This is the first book about this group of Rooseveltians and their linkage to Lyndon Johnson's Great Society and the Vietnam War debacle. Michael Janeway grew up inside this world. His father, Eliot Janeway, business editor of Time and a star writer for Fortune and Life magazines, was part of this circle, strategizing and practicing politics as well as reporting on these men. Drawing on his intimate knowledge of events and previously unavailable private letters and other documents, Janeway crafts a riveting account of the exercise of power during the New Deal and its aftermath. He shows how these men were at the nexus of reform impulses at the electoral level with reform thinking in the social sciences and the law and explains how this potent fusion helped build the contemporary American state. Since that time efforts to reinvent government by "brains trust" have largely failed in the U.S. In the last quarter of the twentieth century American politics ceased to function as a blend of broad coalition building and reform agenda setting, rooted in a consensus of belief in the efficacy of modern government. Can a progressive coalition of ideas and power come together again? The Fall of the House of Roosevelt makes such a prospect both alluring and daunting.

Book excerpt: In I Never Wanted to Be a Princess - Good Thing or How I lost 380 Pounds without Diet or Exercise, the events are true life experiences, including the issues with the chocolate syrup can. It is a love story, in a sense, sometimes sad, sometimes angry, more times humorous, with a little sarcasm and inspiration thrown in for good measure. The intent-to inspire others to keep up the good fight. Punching a forty-pound long bag helps. We all have storms in our lives, and many have had more "him-a-canes" and "her-a-canes" than me, but with perseverance, you can turn the page on a new chapter of your life. Even when things go . . . not so much as planned. My situation is not uncommon but is one of the hardest things I have dealt with. Writing this book has given me the insight and desire to go on and want a better life and "find myself" as they say. By doing so, I have gained a healthier, happier, and more successful life. I managed to get through life's trials and tribulations, even when I ran out of chocolate chips. A sense of humor helps to get through. I prefer jeans and a T-shirt over formal attire but can clean up when needed. I think tomboys have more fun. I can't really judge because I have never been a princess and, most likely, never will be. I begin a diet on Monday and usually quit Monday night or early Tuesday. I rather laugh than cry. I have a deep faith and not going to second-guess that there is a man or woman above that helps us through life with our best interests at heart. I did have a painful weight loss. Tipping the scales broke my heart, but this is not a diet book. Seeing me, you would know I am not a diet expert. From these pages, I hope you are encouraged, get plenty of laughs, and gain a deeper understanding of what it is like to sit on the cold hard toilet seat of life.

Book excerpt: Kristine McKenna's work as a journalist began in the late 1970s, when she covered the Los Angeles punk scene for various domestic and international publications. During the '80s and '90s she wrote art, film and music criticism, and profiled directors, musicians and visual artists for a variety of publications including Artforum, Playboy, Rolling Stone, The Los Angeles Times and New York Rocker. Talk to Her is McKenna's second collection (the first was 1999's Book of Changes) of favorite interviews culled from McKenna's files, and the book reveal's McKenna's highly intimate technique as an interviewer. That she manages to get such candor out of her subjects is remarkable. The stunning list of interview subjects includes: Filmmaker Robert Altman; Jackie Onassis's cousin Edie Beale; punk rocker and poet Exene Cervenka; the musician Elvis Costello; surf guitar legend Dick Dale; the postmodern critic Jacques Derrida; Beat poet Allen Ginsberg; Television's Richard Hell and Tom Verlaine; art curator Walter Hopps; Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde; country music legend Rickie Lee Jones; the Sex Pistols' John Lydon (a.k.a. Johnny Rotten); singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell; the Rabbi Jonathan Omer-Man; punk rock legend Joey Ramone; New York rock legend Lou Reed; the actress Eva Marie Saint; and the recently-departed Joe Strummer of the Clash. Also included are brief oral histories of Andy Warhol and Orson Welles.
