This anthology of more than 170 short excerpts from fiction, poetry, essays, and memoirs presents fresh and unexpected views of Paris: Franz Kafka on riding the Metro; Truman Capote on visiting Colette in her apartment in the Palais-Royal; Jane Kramer on Parisian style; Claude Debussy on the Luxembourg Gardens; E.B. White on the Liberation; and Maya Angelou on Paris nightlife. With an evocative foreword by Susan Sontag, and atmospheric charcoal drawings by Miles Hyman, this is a treasured volume for anyone who remembers Paris, from literature, or from their own walks along the Seine.

Book excerpt: What leads a young lawyer to change his successful career in Madrid for a life dedicated to others in Ethiopia? For Paco Moreno, author of these moving pages, his future was well established: a graduate in law, he set up his own office and from a very young age enjoyed a privileged economic situation. However, by chance, or perhaps motivated by a need to give something back in exchange for his good fortune, he travelled as a volunteer to Ethiopia and was never the same person again. He observed there that the nomadic tribes of the region do not have enough water and that the girls can not go to school because every day they have to travel a long way along the scorching desert sand to fill their containers. And he saw how those people, babies, children, pregnant mothers and the elderly, died from malnutrition or from diseases that he believed had been totally eradicated. Paco Moreno then insisted on returning more and more frequently, and finally founded an NGO, Amigos de Silva, in Afar, the hottest region in the world. In return, he has found his place in this world. This book, winner of the first edition of the Feel Good Award, is a testimony of what it means to give something back, and it details the reasons why doing so can make us happy.

Book excerpt: We live in a complex world order built with a multitude of competing sovereign nations - countries with varying economic, political and military power - a world structured by international organizations which sometimes work but at other times are bypassed. But the dominant status of the United States is under threat and the institutions that were created more than 50 years ago, are beginning to lose their significance in certain circumstances and redefining their purpose and structure in others. In this new dynamic, India and China are often seen as the next superpowers, with a shift of global influence to Asia and the East. As the economies of Indian and China continue to grow rapidly enhancing the power of these countries, they must now take on an active role in the restructuring of international institutions and the constitution of a new world order. This is far from easy and there are obstacles to overcome, including opposition from entrenched interests, questions about the confidence and ability of these nations to create such strategies, and the sustainability of their economic growth engines which are the driving forces of their influence. A peaceful and orderly restructuring of global Institutions and their objectives, as well as models of governance and the rebalance of world power, should be the strategic objectives of India's foreign policy. This book attempts to collate and analyze the current structure of the world as well as the major events of the past 60 years, primarily through the United Nations as a global institution; the UN Security Council and collective security; international monetary and financial structure through the IMF and World Bank; trade and commerce through the GATT and WTO; and finally the impact of global warming and the international response to it. It also indicates possible directions and options for India in exerting greater influence in the world through these global institutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prof. Kreutz presents a concise geopolitical and historical background of Russia and the major predicaments that currently hamper its full international integration and acceptance. He outlines the negative and potentially dangerous aspects of the existing situation. In the author's view the Russian Federation, which is a successor state of the Soviet Union and the previous Russian Empire, should not now be treated as a defeated nation on probation. Rather, alongside China, it should be acknowledged as a great independent power with its own political traditions and interests. Only such an approach can secure international peace and cooperation in Europe and Asia, which are needed by all countries of the region and even the world at large. The book's approach is mainly historical; nevertheless it focuses on some of the most important and controversial present day international challenges both in Europe and Asia. Its aims to address academics, journalists and other specialists, but also is written for the general public. Its goal is to provide an alternative and unprejudiced view of the "Russian Problem," starting with the recognition that the struggle for survival has been a major challenge in Russia's past and present - a fact that is often seemingly overlooked by those analysts who misconstrue defensive moves as potential aggression. An expert on Eastern Europe and political history, Prof. Kreutz is neither a Russia-sympathizer nor a Russia-basher, but he presents a neutral account of Russia's place in the world. This book fills a gap left by other recent works including the historical monograph by Marshall J. Poe, The Russian Moment in World History, which provides only the introduction and background to the present situations, and Professor Tsygankov's Russia's Foreign Policy: Change and Continuity in National Identity, which is more about various Russian political theories than on the actual socio-political and geopolitical situation of the country. Mankoff's Russian Foreign Policy. The Return of Great Power Politics and Treisman's The Return: Journey from Gorbachev to Medvyedev are focused on the current political issues and make some interesting points; however, they do not seem to perceive the challenges coming to Russia from the neo-capitalist transformations and US imperial expansion in its neighborhood. Dmitri Trenin did not mention much about them either, in Post-Imperium-Eurasian Story. While presenting a rather bleak picture of present-day Russia, he suggests that Moscow should open itself fully to the capitalist modernization and accept US hegemony. His comparisons of the Soviet Union with the former Western colonial empires are not always convincing. Trenin, a former Soviet Colonel and diplomat is apparently influenced by his present employment with the Carnegie Endowment, but his book is nevertheless informative and makes an interesting contribution to the existing literature on the subject.

The pressures for change have come from the most severe global financial crisis ever. The crisis has accelerated China's emergence as a great power. But China and its global partners have yet to think or work through the consequences of its new position for the governance of world affairs. China's New Place in a World in Crisis discusses and provides in-depth analysis of the following questions. How have China's growth prospects been affected by the global crisis? How will the crisis and China's response to it impact China's major domestic issues, such as industrialisation, urbanisation and the reform of the state-owned sector of the economy? How will the crisis and the international community's response to it affect the rapidly emerging new international order? What will be China's, and other major developing countries', new role? Can China and the world find a way of breaking the nexus between economic growth and environmental sustainability - especially on the issue of climate change?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the war in Afghanistan is now in its endgame, the West’s struggle to eliminate the threat from Al Qaeda is far from over. A decade after 9/11, the war on terror has entered a new phase and, it would seem, a new territory. In early 2010, Al Qaeda operatives were reportedly “streaming” out of central Asia toward Somalia and the surrounding region. Somalia, now home to some of the world’s most dangerous terrorists, was already the world’s most failed state. Two decades of anarchy have spawned not just Islamic extremism but piracy, famine, and a seemingly endless clan-based civil war that has killed an estimated 500,000, turned millions into refugees, and caused hundreds of thousands more to flee and settle in Europe and North America. What is now happening in Somalia directly threatens the security of the world, possibly more than any other region on earth. James Fergusson’s book is the first accessible account of how Somalia became the world’s most dangerous place and what we can—and should—do about it.

Indeed, Christianity alone can explain goodness and evil in the world; it alone makes sense of our impulses to love and sacrifice, and our failures to do so.
