Book Synopsis Enabling the Elderly by : Sheldon S. Tobin
Download or read book Enabling the Elderly written by Sheldon S. Tobin and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here three gerontological professionals have combined their diverse backgrounds in a timely and urgently needed study of how religious institutions interact with their communities to provide care for the elderly. In an easily accessible and well-written text, actual and potential services are described, and ways of enhancing religious/agency collaboration are suggested. Data are presented from studies in four communities and in a variety of provider settings. The book begins with an overview of aging in modern society, followed by a discussion of the vital importance of spiritual well-being for elderly women and men today. The authors show how church and synagogue can provide services for elderly persons, highlighting ways in which intentions can be translated into programs. A second section identifies diverse categories of elderly persons in the community and their physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs. It suggests opportunities for religious organizations to address these needs, particularly through collaboration with service agencies. Programs currently provided by synagogues and churches are detailed. A final section examines the benefits of institutions working together with service agencies on potential problem areas. It provides ways to enhance the partnership--from simple communication, to cooperation, coordination, collaboration, and even confederation. The book concludes with a useful model, developed from the authors' original research, that can enhance interaction between churches and synagogues, and service agencies.

Download or read book Ministering to Older Adults written by Donald Koepke and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-18 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn how to focus your ministry’s programs and services on the elderly By 2030, 20% of the people living in the United States will be age 65 or older, with unique spiritual needs that can affect their physical and mental well-being. Ministering to Older Adults answers the critical need for a ministry that doesn’t center primarily on youth and families in its outreach, instead presenting a step-by-step guide to developing a ministry for the aged that is focused on the needs and resources of each congregation. This program has been used effectively with nearly 50 congregations, both large and small, to create a focused older adult ministry. No two congregations are alike. The resources, perspectives, and skills of each congregation are different, as are the needs of its members. Ministering to Older Adults provides a framework for use by planning groups within communities of any religious tradition. The book presents a process that includes essential questions that allow planning groups to develop answers that fit the needs, cultural, history, and structure of their individual congregations. Ministering to Older Adults is divided into three sections: The Fundamentalsdefining your audience, your mission, and the skills and existing programs that can be brought to the planning process Programming Possibilitiesspiritual needs based on the aging process, continued learning for older adults, opportunities to serve and be served, providing quality pastoral care, and community building Putting it All Togetherdeciding on a direction, using desired outcomes for evaluation, establishing target dates, and ongoing evaluation Ministering to Older Adults also includes forms and charts to help in the planning process. The book is an invaluable resource for clergy, ministry committees and planning groups, and staff persons responsible for older adult ministries.
Book Synopsis Growing Old in Christ by : Stanley Hauerwas
Download or read book Growing Old in Christ written by Stanley Hauerwas and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2003-06-20 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the hallmarks of contemporary culture is its attitude toward aging and the elderly. Youth and productivity are celebrated in today's society, while the elderly are increasingly marginalized. This not only poses difficulties for old people but is also a loss for the young and middle-agers, who could learn much from the elderly, including what it means to grow old (and die) "in Christ." Growing Old in Christ presents the first serious theological reflection ever on what it means to grow old, particularly in our culture and particularly as a Christian. In a full-orbed discussion of the subject, eighteen first-rate Christian thinkers survey biblical and historical perspectives on aging, look at aging in the modern world, and describe the "Christian practice of growing old." Along the way they address many timely issues, including the medicalization of aging, the debate over physician-assisted suicide, and the importance of friendships both among the elderly and between the elderly and the young. Weighty enough to instruct theologians, ethicists, and professional caregivers yet accessible enough for pastors and general readers, this book will benefit anyone seeking faith-based insight into growing old. Book excerpt: Evangelicals, Simon Chan argues, are confused about the meaning and purpose of the church in part because they have an inadequate understanding of Christian worship. He calls evangelicals to develop a theology of worship that is grounded in a theology of the church. He guides the reader through worship practices and their significance for theology, spirituality and the renewal of evangelicalism in the postmodern era.

Book Synopsis The Role of the Church in Aging by : Michael C. Hendrickson
Download or read book The Role of the Church in Aging written by Michael C. Hendrickson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1987 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this motivating book, professionals explore an array of programs for the elderly--all sponsored by religious organizations--that have been successfully implemented in communities throughout the United States. Their common goal is to meet the social, emotional, religious, and health needs of the elderly. Religious organizations constitute by far the largest single network of voluntary community organizations serving the needs of elderly in American society. Experts thoroughly examine the programs, including potential residents, services provided, and financial resources. Topics include geriatric health clinics in the community, day centers for older adults, share-a-home, legal guardianship, congregate housing, retirement homes, long-term care facilities, and more.

Book Synopsis Does God Need the Church? by : Gerhard Lohfink
Download or read book Does God Need the Church? written by Gerhard Lohfink and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2014-12-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are not all religions equally close to and equally far from God? Why, then, the Church? Gerhard Lohfink poses these questions with scholarly reliability and on the basis of his own experience of community in Does God Need the Church? In 1982 Father Lohfink wrote Wie hat Jesus Gemeinde gewollt? (translated into English as Jesus and Community) to show, on the basis of the New Testament, that faith is founded in a community that distinguishes itself in clear contours from the rest of society. In that book he also described a sequence of events that moved directly from commonality to a community that was readily accessible to every group of people and was made legitimate by Jesus himself. Only later did Father Lohfink learn, within a new horizon of experience, that such a description is not the way to community. The story of the gathering of the people of God, from Abraham until today, never took place according to such a model. Today Father Lohfink states that he would not write Wie hat Jesus Gemeinde gewollt? the same way. The situation of belief and believers has undergone a shift: the question of the Church has become much more urgent. Church life is declining and the religions are returning, often in new guises. In light of these shifts and the change in his own view of community, Father Lohfink inquires in Does God Need the Church? of Israel's theology, Jesus' praxis, the experiences of the early Christian communities, and of what is appearing in the Church today. These inquiries lead to an amazing history involving God and the world - a history that God presses forward with the aid of a single people and that always turns out differently from what they think and plan.
