Download or read book Old English Prose written by Paul E. Szarmach and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-13 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2001. With the decline of formalism and its predilection for Old English poetry, Old English prose is leaving the periphery and moving into the center of literary and cultural discussion. The extensive corpus of Old English prose lends many texts of various kinds to the current debates over literary theory and its multiple manifestations. The purpose of this collection is to assist the growing interest in Old English prose by providing essays that help establish the foundations for considered study and offer models and examples of special studies. Both retrospective and current in its examples, this collection can serve as a "first book" for an introduction to study, particularly suitable for courses that seek to entertain such issues as authorship, texts and textuality, source criticism, genre, and forms of historical criticism as a significant part of a broad, cultural teaching (and research) plan.

Book Synopsis Reading Old English Texts by : Katherine O'Brien O'Keeffe
Download or read book Reading Old English Texts written by Katherine O'Brien O'Keeffe and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-08-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Old English Texts, first published in 1997, focuses on the critical methods being used and developed for reading and analysing writings in Old English. The collection is timely, given the explosion of interest in the theory, method, and practice of critical reading. Each chapter engages with work on Old English texts from a particular methodological stance. The authors are all experts in the field, but are also concerned to explain their method and its application to a broad undergraduate and graduate readership. The chapters include a brief historical background to the approach; a definition of the field or method under consideration; a discussion of some exemplary criticism (with a balance of prose and verse passages); an illustration of the ways in which texts are read through this approach, and some suggestions for future work.
Book Synopsis Old English Prose and Verse by : Roger Fowler
Download or read book Old English Prose and Verse written by Roger Fowler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-23 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1966, this book provides students of the earliest stage of our literature with a selection of texts for a complete introductory course. All the principal poems and prose works in this literature are represented, including more generous extracts from Beowulf than are common in anthologies of this type. By omitting texts of primarily philological and historical interest it has been possible to include enough literary texts to satisfy all but the advanced student, who will follow this volume with the specialised editions available. A departure from the traditional design of Old English anthologies is the provision of full critical and annotative apparatus. In the past it has been necessary for students to go beyond their Readers, to specialised editions or to learned articles, in order to discover even the most basic information about the extracts or their content. Here each text is accompanied by an introduction which gives brief details of (where known) date, authorship, manuscript situation, character and critical interest. Line-by-line explanatory notes are also provided, and a bibliography of books and articles for further study. The glossary aims to be more explicit about form and meaning, and easier to use than those of earlier selections.

Book Synopsis The Narrative Unity of the Cursor Mundi by : Ernest Mardon
Download or read book The Narrative Unity of the Cursor Mundi written by Ernest Mardon and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cursor Mundi is a long religious epic of 25 000 lines, a survey of man's view of the world as it appeared to an anonymous cleric living in the fourteenth century. The poem is unique in that it is the first work of this kind written in the English language since the Norman Conquest. It is also the most comprehensive treatment in the vernacular during the Middle Ages, of all the most important events in the religious history of the world. The purpose of Dr. Mardon's study is to show the artistic unity, achieved by skillful blending of prophecy and legend, of one of the most remarkable pieces of medieval literature. The book provides an eminently readable and interesting introduction to the longer poem, the author quoting generously from the original Early English text. A useful addition to the book list of the student dealing with the literature of this important period.

Book Synopsis Helena of Britain in Medieval Legend by : Antonina Harbus
Download or read book Helena of Britain in Medieval Legend written by Antonina Harbus and published by DS Brewer. This book was released on 2002 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St Helena, mother of Constantine the Great and legendary finder of the True Cross, was appropriated in the middle ages as a British saint. The rise and persistence of this legend harnessed Helena's imperial and sacred status to portray her as a romance heroine, source of national pride, and a legitimising link to imperial Rome. This study is the first to examine the origins, development, political exploitation and decline of this legend, tracing its momentum and adaptive power from Anglo-Saxon England to the twentieth century. Using Latin, English, and Welsh texts, as well as church dedications and visual arts, the author examines the positive effect of the British legend on the cult of St Helena and the reasons for its wide appeal and durability in both secular and religious contexts. Two previously unpublished vitae of St Helena are included in the volume: a Middle English verse vita from the South English Legendary, and a Latin prose vita by the twelfth-century hagiographer, Jocelin of Furness. Antonina Harbus is Professor in the Department of English at Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.
Book Synopsis Mulieres suadentes - Persuasive Women by : Martin Homza
Download or read book Mulieres suadentes - Persuasive Women written by Martin Homza and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mulieres suadentes - Persuasive Women, Martin Homza scrutinises the genesis of ruler ideology among the most prominent East Central and Eastern European dynasties from the early and later Middle Ages. At the center of attention are the Přemyslids, the Piasts, the Rurikids, and the Árpáds, but also the main dynasties of the Balkans, namely the Trpimirović and the Nemanjić dynasties, as well as the House of Bogdan, and the Moldova dynasty of the Muṣatins. Unlike previous work, which has focused on narrative sources of male ruler hagiography, Homza studies texts concerning female royal figures. More broadly, this book also attempts to bridge the artificial gap between West and East in Europe.
Book Synopsis Anglo-Saxon Manuscripts and their Heritage by : Phillip Pulsiano
Download or read book Anglo-Saxon Manuscripts and their Heritage written by Phillip Pulsiano and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-13 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume brings together some of the best recent work on the period before and after the Norman Conquest and makes an irresistible case for a number of fundamental revisions in our understanding of the culture of Anglo-Saxon and Norman England. Combining the use of novel techniques such as digital image processing with the best current practice in textual and iconographic study, this volume broadens the scope and applicability of manuscript studies, showing, for example, the falsity of prevailing notions of the vitality and status of the native English tongue after the Conquest. The essays combine to make a coherent and persuasive demonstration of the benefits of not remaining bound to the physical artifact but rather connecting codicology with practical and theoretical applications within manuscript studies and other historical disciplines.
