Although her grandfather is a good man, he is preoccupied with keeping Nell away from her brother Fred and his gambling obsession. To that end, he recklessly borrows money so that he can gamble more and to supplement his income. But Nell's grandfather never pays his money back, which attracts the attention of a young man named Daniel Quilp, who continues to lend Nell's grandfather money despite knowing that he would not be able to pay it back. After all, he wants to marry Nell and he thinks that lending her grandfather money will help him do that. After Nell refuses to marry Quilp, Quilp and Nell's grandfather's other creditors go on the offensive. They start to hound her grandfather for their money, which causes Nell and her grandfather to go on the run. Book excerpt: A whole generation, on either side of the Atlantic, used to fall sobbing at the name of Little Nell, which will hardly bring tears to the eyes of any one now, though it is still apparent that the child was imagined with real feelings, and her sad little melodrama was staged with sympathetic skill. When all is said against the lapses of taste and truth, the notion of the young girl wandering up and down the country with her demented grandfather, and meeting good and evil fortune with the same devotion, till death overtakes her, is something that must always touch the heart. It is preposterously overdone, yes, and the author himself falls into pages of hysterical rhythm, which once moved people, when he ought to have been writing plain, straight prose; yet there is in all a sense of the divinity in common and humble lives, which is the most precious quality of literature, as it is almost the rarest, and it is this which moves and consoles. It is this quality in Dickens which Tolstoy prizes and accepts as proof of his great art, and which the true critic must always set above any effect of literary mastery. "The Old Curiosity Shop" makes strong appeal to a youthful imagination, and contains little that is beyond its scope. Dickens's sentiment, however it may distress the mature mind of our later day, is not unwholesome, and, at all events in this story, addresses itself naturally enough to feelings unsubdued by criticism. His quality of picturesqueness is here seen at its best, with little or nothing of that melodrama which makes the alloy of "Nicholas Nickleby" and "Oliver Twist" —to speak only of the early books.

Book excerpt: Little Nell Trent lives alone with her aged grandfather, who runs an old curiosity shop. The grandfather, Little Nell's mother's father, has two obsessions. One is keeping Little Nell away from her brother, Fred, a drunken profligate. The other is a burning desire to gamble. Hoping to provide a fortune for the little girl, the old man gambles away every penny he can get. Not content with using the income of the curiosity shop, the old man borrows money recklessly. One of the old man's creditors is an ugly, misshapen, cruel dwarf named Quilp. The husband of a pretty but browbeaten young woman, Quilp plots to ruin the old man and someday marry Little Nell, who is only fourteen years old. Having discovered the old man's passion for gambling by forcing his wife to spy on Little Nell, Quilp is soon able to take over the old curiosity shop by due process of law. Little Nell and her grandfather leave during the night and start an aimless journey from London to western England.

The Old Curiosity Shop follows Little Nell Trent, who lives with his grandfather in - as the title suggests - an old curiosity shop. However, their life already isn't easy and is being made harder by a man named Daniel Quilp, who is breathing down their necks and making them feel unsafe, forcing them to flee to safety. When it was released, The Old Curiosity Shop received incredibly positive reviews. Among the novels many admirers was Queen Victoria, who remarked that the book was "very interesting and cleverly written." In their review, a prominent book blogger remarked that Dickens is "an extraordinary novelist" and that this novel is extraordinary and incredibly interesting - mostly because of the book's structure.

Book excerpt: The Old Curiosity Shop:Annotated by Charles Dickens Charles Dickens's The Old Curiosity Store, the archetypal Victorian melodrama, is edited with notes and an introduction by Norman Web page in Penguin Classics. Small Nell Trent lives in the peaceful gloom of the run-down curiosity shop with her ailing grandfather, for whom she cares selflessly. However, when they cannot repay their debts to the stunted, passionate, and demonic money-loan provider Daniel Quilp, the store is seized. They are forced to flee, thrusting them into a shadowy world where there appears to be no haven. Dickens's portrayal of the innocent, tragic Nell made The Aged Curiosity Shop an immediate bestseller that captured the hearts of the country, even though statistics such as Oscar Wilde criticized it for its sentimentality. However, along with the story's pathos are some of Dickens's most memorable comic and grotesque creations: the ne'er-do-well Dick Swiveller, the mannish lawyer Sally Brass, the half-starved Marchioness,' and the lustful, loathsome Quilp himself. This book includes an author biography as well as a table of contents that is linked to each chapter (Kindle edition). We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high-quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
