It is an excellent story, not only of the conflict itself, but also the interplay between the natives, early settlers, missionaries, and army personalities involved. There is a wealth of contemporary documentation available, but modern histories often center on only certain aspects of those conflicts. Many of the tribes on the Washington coast and in the interior had strong ties with one another and the events of the Washington Territory Indian wars in the Puget Sound area and the Inland Empire area are tied to one another. This is not often been brought together in a single work. This is short history of those conflicts, along with an extensive bibliography of references of both contemporary works and original source material. Most of the sites where the major events that occurred during this conflict are marked today, and a guide to those sites is included.

From Neah Bay to Asotin and from Spokane to Grays Harbor, citizen soldiers and airmen have served and sacrificed in both local communities and exotic places: Spokane and Luzon, Whidbey Island and Calexico, American Lake and Bordeaux, Mount St. Helens and Afghanistan. Their story is now brought vividly to life in these photographs and stories. It is offered not only for history buffs but also for the thousands of current and past National Guard members, families, friends, and neighbors touched by their service to state and nation.

The regions contain certain similarities, and during the first half of the nineteenth century they were even grouped together as a distinct political and economic unit, called the "Oregon Country" by Americans and the "Columbia Department" of the Hudson's Bay Company by the British. The essays in this volume -- which grew out of a conference commemorating the Oregon Treaty of 1846 -- view the boundary between Canada and the United States as a dividing line and also as a regional backbone, with people on each side of the border having key experiences and attitudes in common. In their eloquence and scope, they illustrate how historical study of Canadian-American relations in the West calls into question the parameters of the nation-state. The border has not had a single constant meaning; rather, its significance has changed over time and varied from group to group. The essays in Part One concern the movement of peoples and capital across a relatively permeable boundary during the nineteenth century. Many people in this era--especially Natives, miners, immigrants, and capitalists--did not regard the international boundary as particularly important. Part Two considers how the United States and Canada took pains to strengthen and enforce the international boundary during the twentieth century. In this era, the nation-state became more assertive about defining and defending the borderline. Part Three offers considerations of the distinctions, both real and imagined, that emerged during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries between Canada and the United States. Its essays examine different schools of history, divergent ideas toward wilderness, and the influence of anti-Americanism on Canadians' view of national development in North America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Washington State National Guard has a long history, but it has only existed continuously since the 1880s. Until the Spanish-American War, the Guard served as a police force, but under Adjutant General James A. Drain, the focus of the Guard shifted toward a military mission. The periond from 1901 to 1917 was very important in the evolution of the Washington National Guard to a modern force. From 1901 to 1906 Drain initiated reforms at the state level aimed at transforming the Guard into a proficient military force. These reforms preceded action at the national level. When the Dick Act was passed in 1903, the Washington National Guard was already in compliance with federal regulations. The permanence of Drain's reforms was tested during the years 1906 to 1909. The Guard was hurt by Adjutant General Ortis Hamilton's actions--embezzling $37,000. His successor, George Lamping, was unable to control Guard officers and a factional fight erupted. At the same time the Guard expanded, forming coast artillery and naval militia units. An illegal activation occurred in Spokane, a move condemned by Guard leaders which demonstrated their reluctance to become involved in police activities.Between 1911 to 1915 the Guard reached its peak efficiency, despite manpower and fiscal woes. When called upon to mobilize in 1916, it did so at full war strength. The Guard continued to grow, as it met War Department requirements. In 1917 it was federalized, and its units broken up to provide replacements for Guard and regular units in Europe. This book is primarily based on the Governors' Papers housed at the Washington State Archives in Olympia, Washington. It is also based in part on the Records of the Military Department in the State Archives. The Adjutant Generals' Biennial Reports were used extensively, with contemporary newspaper accounts filling in the gaps. Published War and Navy Department reports provided a critical look at the efficiency of the Guard. Secondary sources were used primarily for background information.
