Book excerpt: For too many years, police firearms training programs have been designed based primarily upon the influence of outside sources: the military, civilian target and competition shooters, and some of the self-proclaimed ?gun gurus? who often have a personal and financial stake in promoting their own style of pistolcraft. Now, for the first time, a firearms training program built specifically to meet the unique needs of the modern law enforcement officer has been developed. The New Paradigm Program is designed to help ensure that our police officers are as well prepared as possible?mentally, physically, and emotionally?to employ their duty pistols safely, efficiently, and effectively when the need arises. In POLICE PISTOLCRAFT you will learn: ? Why the majority of police firearms training programs in use today do not satisfy the legal, moral, and ethical requirements that the courts have identified and professionalism demands. ? How the successful ?New Paradigm? Police Firearms Training Program was developed and implemented specifically to satisfy these requirements as well as ensure the greatest chances of officer survival.? About the unique experiment that produced the program as well as detailed information documenting the positive results seen to date.? How to easily create a New Paradigm-based firearms training program for your own department, agency, or unit.

Book excerpt: Veteran police officer Michael Conti presents the first complete coverage of chemical agents and equipment from the perspective of a street cop. In one comprehensive volume, readers can quickly and easily find pertinent information about modern chemical agents, how they are deployed, their effects and state-of-the-art protective gear. It includes the most common chemical agent weapons (from OC spray to gas launchers to thermal fogging systems), specialty impact munitions and military-class chemical agent weapons (from blood and blister agents to deadly nerve agents), as well as a concise history of their development and use. This allows the reader to better understand the role these devices have played in the past and the role they may play in the coming years, both by law enforcement agencies and terrorist organizations. This is a must-read for law enforcement, military and security personnel, or anyone with a responsibility for, or concern about, the use of chemical agents. Especially timely now is the section on how to ensure personal safety in the event of a chemical attack.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collection of research results providing police officials and officers with comparative technical information on various types and models of handguns and ammunition. Prior to standardization which occurred within police departments in the 1930's, officers were usually expected to furnish their equipment, including weapons and ammunition. Two factors, a high-degree of accuracy in the .38 S & W special revolver cartridge and the convenience of police exchanging a standard ammunition, led to the adoption of the S & W .38 by most large departments. However, researchers since 1900 have presented evidence that this accepted police handgun cartridge should be reevaluated in terms of effectiveness. Professor Bristow offers a review of some of that research in this collection of agency evaluations, factory ballistic test reports, excerpted government documents, and other materials which present alternatives to the .38 special as the standard police handgun. Wound ballistics, considerations of velocity and shock, and technical concerns over accuracy versus recoil are detailed in both descriptive and statistical terms. The pros and cons of high-velocity expanding bullets are presented, as are the implications of using large caliber revolvers and semi-automatic pistols. These subjects are also discussed in the context of such larger problems as the cost-risk of change and community relations versus officer protection. The material is intended to aid law enforcement officials and officers who have the responsibility of choosing and justifying a handgun for their agency or themselves.

The goal of this unique book is to increase officers' awareness that training in low-light and no-light conditions is necessary in order for them to prevail in such situations, to help facilitate correct decision making under these conditions, and to help them understand the use of a myriad of illumination tools available for professional use today. Major topics include: (1) dim-light and no-light doctrine, including navigation techniques, threat location, threat acquisition, and threat identification; (2) flashlight doctrine, including many examples of engaging a threat using a flashlight; (3) low-light weapon sighting systems; (4) techniques used for signalling during dim-light and no-light conditions; and (5) illumination technologies supporting tactical and emergency operations, including infrared systems, thermal imagers, night vision systems, strobe lights, and lasers. Through the use of the techniques described throughout this unique and comprehensive book, the skill, professionalism, and ability of police officers to operate and survive in dim-light, no-light, and artificial light conditions will be enhanced
