This being the case, it must be granted, that the study of Pindar ought to form an indispensable part of classic education; for, although some of the ancient poets may, perhaps, equal him in sublimity of conception, it cannot be denied, that in the moral tendency of his compositions, and the spirit of devotion, which animates his poems, he soars above all other writers, whether of Greece or of Rome. To render, in some measure, more easy, and, consequently, it is presumed, more general, the reading of this noble poet, is the object of the volumes now offered to the indulgence of the public. - I shall here proceed to make a few observations, explanatory of the means by which it has been proposed to attain this object: most readers will, I hope, be sufficiently candid to give them that fair perusal, which, from the critic, I claim as an indisputable right.
