Download or read book Jailcare written by Carolyn Sufrin and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of pregnant women pass through our nation’s jails every year. What happens to them as they gestate their pregnancies in a space of punishment? Using her ethnographic fieldwork and clinical work as an Ob/Gyn in a women’s jail, Carolyn Sufrin explores how, in this time when the public safety net is frayed and incarceration has become a central and racialized strategy for managing the poor, jail has, paradoxically, become a place where women can find care. Focusing on the experiences of pregnant, incarcerated women as well as on the practices of the jail guards and health providers who care for them, Jailcare describes the contradictory ways that care and maternal identity emerge within a punitive space presumed to be devoid of care. Sufrin argues that jail is not simply a disciplinary institution that serves to punish. Rather, when understood in the context of the poverty, addiction, violence, and racial oppression that characterize these women’s lives and their reproduction, jail can become a safety net for women on the margins of society.

Book excerpt: In the heart of southern hospitality and generosity lies a county stained by the breath and blood of corruption. Dylan, a product of small-town country living, embarks on a harrowing journey to confront his dark past of degrading abuse and seeks redemption through peer acceptance, social fame, and self-worth. But as he navigates the storms of reality, he discovers that his path to salvation leads him behind the walls of jail. Imprisoned within the confines of a corrupt and unjust system, Dylan is confronted with a web of avarice, hypocrisy, and moral decay. Surrounded by self-proclaimed judges and jurors who manipulate power to validate their ethical transgressions, he grapples with the twisted perceptions of criminal behavior, due process, and the human soul. Alongside fellow inmates and sympathetic deputies, Dylan engages in an emotional struggle for inner peace, hope, and redemption. Together, they must confront their demons while challenging the very foundations of the legal empire that engulfs them.

Download or read book From Light into the Abyss written by Jim Jacobs and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We've ushered in a new era of the outlaw duo Bonnie and Clyde. There are no pistols or shotguns visible, no banks involved, and few if any wanted posters displayed in your local Post Office. The weapon of choice has become the keyboard and laptop computer. It has become a merging bacteria spreading like wildfire perilously and dangerously close to imploding on God's moral laws and His judgment upon this Nation. Call it scams, live sex cams, or our youth behaving badly, its tentacles reach all socioeconomic households in this country. Adding to this mix of immorality we have prostitution, illegal drug smuggling and its use, human slave trafficking, domestic abuse, abortion, same sex marriage, political chicanery, etc. You've just created a cocktail of criminal behavior as in the days of Sodom and Gomorrah. The question then arises out of this storm of immorality is not if; but when God will exact His wrath upon this Nation.

Book Synopsis American Silhouettes by : Christian Beres Calmejane
Download or read book American Silhouettes written by Christian Beres Calmejane and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-04-21 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Volume I of two volumes. American Silhouettes is primarily a study in human character in its dealing with the adversity of life. The setting is America during the last quarter of the twentieth century. More specifically it focuses on the struggle of two generations of a small African American family whose destiny encounters more than its share of horrific tribulations. It is a window on life, love, happiness, suffering, and death of the members of this small vulnerable resilient family from the South, that moves to Washington, D.C. for a better life, only to find a very short interlude of happiness, followed by a deep plunge into another cycle of trauma and despair; not death though, that would be too easy; and when death finally does come, it is a liberation of the body and soul. The saga continues with the cycle of misfortune repeating itself in a new age, a new generation with the same finality as if their destiny had been wickedly predefined. From Bridgeville SC to Washington DC, and from Rome to Dakar, their saga brings to light the evil and virtuousness of man in its most natural occurrence, as a part of daily life. The story brings together various individuals of different and sometimes opposite background and describes either the passions of their encounters or the clashes resulting from their conflicts. It analyses the most wonderful passions of love, beauty and happiness, and juxtaposes the horrible ugliness of hate and abuse. It incorporates the duty and responsibility of man within the context of our society and dwells into the aberrations of its marginal sector. It is an interweaved matrix of emotional extremes. It demonstrates that evil has no color, no race, no religion, and that it transcends the social fabric of our society.
