Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jewish Year Book While the present issue of the jewish year book contains no absolutely new features, it diflers in many details from previous publications, and though in the number of its pages it does not exceed last year's volume, it will be found to, contain a great deal of additional matter. This has been rendered possible by means of compression both as to literary form and the style of printing. We five long passed the halcyon days when the year book could be printed with wide interspaces. Every inch of room saved is now a matter of importance, and is utilised by the many new institutions that have to be noticed. The number of persons noted in Who's Who amounts to 494, as against 473 last year and already 20 fresh items have been noted for the next issue for which no space could be found in the present volume. The regular reader will also not fail to notice many improvements in the arrangement of the matter. It will be observed that the Jewish Calendar is for fifteen months, and extends from the approaching New Year, 5658, to December 31st, 1908. In, future issues the jewish year book will be published, in conformity with most other annuals, at the end of the civil year - the present. Arrangement of issuing the book in September having proved in many respects exceedingly inconvenient. The usual Tables 'of Statistics on Alien Immigration are omitted, as the new form of Government returns gives no satisfactory basis of comparison with previous years. Fraenkel was a world-renowned mathematician in pre–Second World War Germany, whose work on set theory was fundamental to the development of modern mathematics. A friend of Albert Einstein, he knew many of the era’s acclaimed mathematicians personally. He moved to Israel (then Palestine under the British Mandate) in the early 1930s. In his autobiography Fraenkel describes his early years growing up as an Orthodox Jew in Germany and his development as a mathematician at the beginning of the twentieth century. This memoir, originally written in German in the 1960s, has now been translated into English, with an additional chapter covering the period from 1933 until his death in 1965 written by the editor, Jiska Cohen-Mansfield. Fraenkel describes the world of mathematics in Germany in the first half of the twentieth century, its origins and development, the systems influencing it, and its demise. He also paints a unique picture of the complex struggles within the world of Orthodox Jewry in Germany.
