Book Synopsis Statistical Methods in Biology by : S.J. Welham
Download or read book Statistical Methods in Biology written by S.J. Welham and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-08-22 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in simple language with relevant examples, Statistical Methods in Biology: Design and Analysis of Experiments and Regression is a practical and illustrative guide to the design of experiments and data analysis in the biological and agricultural sciences. The book presents statistical ideas in the context of biological and agricultural sciences to which they are being applied, drawing on relevant examples from the authors’ experience. Taking a practical and intuitive approach, the book only uses mathematical formulae to formalize the methods where necessary and appropriate. The text features extended discussions of examples that include real data sets arising from research. The authors analyze data in detail to illustrate the use of basic formulae for simple examples while using the GenStat® statistical package for more complex examples. Each chapter offers instructions on how to obtain the example analyses in GenStat and R. By the time you reach the end of the book (and online material) you will have gained: A clear appreciation of the importance of a statistical approach to the design of your experiments, A sound understanding of the statistical methods used to analyse data obtained from designed experiments and of the regression approaches used to construct simple models to describe the observed response as a function of explanatory variables, Sufficient knowledge of how to use one or more statistical packages to analyse data using the approaches described, and most importantly, An appreciation of how to interpret the results of these statistical analyses in the context of the biological or agricultural science within which you are working. The book concludes with a guide to practical design and data analysis. It gives you the understanding to better interact with consultant statisticians and to identify statistical approaches to add value to your scientific research.

Download or read book Chemometrics written by S.N. Deming and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1988-02-01 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most chemists, whether they are biochemists, organic, analytical, pharmaceutical or clinical chemists and many pharmacists and biologists need to perform chemical analysis. Consequently, they are not only confronted with carrying out the actual analysis, but also with problems such as method selection, experimental design, optimization, calibration, data acquisition and handling, and statistics in order to obtain maximum relevant chemical information. In other words: they are confronted with chemometrics. This book on chemometrics, written by some of the leaders in the field, aims to provide a thorough, up-to-date introduction to this subject. The reader is given the opportunity to acquaint himself with the tools used in this discipline and the way in which they are applied. Some practical examples are given and the reader is shown how to select the appropriate tools in a given situation. As such the book provides the means to approach and solve analytical problems strategically and systematically, without the need for the reader to become a fully-fledged chemometrician. The authors' aim was to write a tutorial book which would be useful to readers at every level in this field.

The reader is assumed to know calculus and a little fuzzy set theory. The conventional knowledge of probability and statistics is required. Key Features: Includes example in Mathematica and MATLAB. Contains theoretical and applied exercises for each section. Presents various popular methods for analyzing fuzzy data. The book is suitable for students and researchers in statistics, social science, engineering, and economics, and it can be used at graduate and P.h.D level.
Book Synopsis Multivariate Reduced-Rank Regression by : Raja Velu
Download or read book Multivariate Reduced-Rank Regression written by Raja Velu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the area of multivariate analysis, there are two broad themes that have emerged over time. The analysis typically involves exploring the variations in a set of interrelated variables or investigating the simultaneous relation ships between two or more sets of variables. In either case, the themes involve explicit modeling of the relationships or dimension-reduction of the sets of variables. The multivariate regression methodology and its variants are the preferred tools for the parametric modeling and descriptive tools such as principal components or canonical correlations are the tools used for addressing the dimension-reduction issues. Both act as complementary to each other and data analysts typically want to make use of these tools for a thorough analysis of multivariate data. A technique that combines the two broad themes in a natural fashion is the method of reduced-rank regres sion. This method starts with the classical multivariate regression model framework but recognizes the possibility for the reduction in the number of parameters through a restrietion on the rank of the regression coefficient matrix. This feature is attractive because regression methods, whether they are in the context of a single response variable or in the context of several response variables, are popular statistical tools. The technique of reduced rank regression and its encompassing features are the primary focus of this book. The book develops the method of reduced-rank regression starting from the classical multivariate linear regression model.

Book Synopsis Ranking of Multivariate Populations by : Livio Corain
Download or read book Ranking of Multivariate Populations written by Livio Corain and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ranking of Multivariate Populations: A Permutation Approach with Applications presents a novel permutation-based nonparametric approach for ranking several multivariate populations. Using data collected from both experimental and observation studies, it covers some of the most useful designs widely applied in research and industry investigations, such as multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and multivariate randomized complete block (MRCB) designs. The first section of the book introduces the topic of ranking multivariate populations by presenting the main theoretical ideas and an in-depth literature review. The second section discusses a large number of real case studies from four specific research areas: new product development in industry, perceived quality of the indoor environment, customer satisfaction, and cytological and histological analysis by image processing. A web-based nonparametric combination global ranking software is also described. Designed for practitioners and postgraduate students in statistics and the applied sciences, this application-oriented book offers a practical guide to the reliable global ranking of multivariate items, such as products, processes, and services, in terms of the performance of all investigated products/prototypes.
