Book Synopsis U.S. Automotive Industry by : Stephen Cooney
Download or read book U.S. Automotive Industry written by Stephen Cooney and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2007 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over one million Americans are employed in manufacturing motor vehicles, equipment and parts. But the industry has changed dramatically since the U.S. "Big Three" motor vehicle corporations (General Motors, Ford and Chrysler) produced the overwhelming majority of cars and light trucks sold in the United States, and directly employed many people themselves. By 2003, most passenger cars sold in the U.S. market were either imported or manufactured by foreign-based producers at new North American plants (so-called "transplant" facilities). The Big Three now dominate only in light trucks, and are also now being challenged there by the foreign brands. The Big Three have shed about 600,000 U.S. jobs since 1980, while about one-quarter of Americans employed in automotive manufacturing (nearly 300,000) work for the foreign-owned companies. It is clear that the U.S. automotive industry has undergone many drastic changes that have had a net adverse effect on American interests. This book examines the causes of these changes. Congressional acts, increasingly stringent emission laws, the effects of NAFTA, labour unions and globalisation are all within the scope of this book.

Book excerpt: Today, the Multinational Enterprise (MNE) is seen as a leading agent in the process of globalization. As they adopt global strategies, MNE's are seen to be creating stronger, deeper and more lasting links amongst countries, thus shifting the balance of power inexorably in their favour, to the detriment of the state. This book interrogates this idea by undertaking a historical analysis of the global strategies of Ford.

Download or read book The NAFTA's Automotive Provisions written by Lorraine Eden and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document analyzes the automotive provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), suggests how they differ from those of the Free Trade Agreement, and speculates on their implications for the Canadian auto industry. Overall, it argues that trade and investment in this industry have been managed by governments for nearly three decades in a manner that accommodates their own economic interests and those of their major producers. To place the NAFTA in its historical context, it briefly reviews the four state policies that currently structure trade and investment in the auto industry. It reviews the positions taken in the NAFTA talks by the various industry stakeholders.

Book excerpt: This book discusses the development of Canadian political economy through the legacy of Stephen Clarkson, who for over 40 years analyzed the challenges that economic changes brought to the economic governance of Canada, North America, and the world. Tracing the main themes of Clarkson scholarship, it explores in four sections how changes in the global economy, such as regional and inter-regional trade agreements, impact the political economy of Canada and North America, the focus of most of Clarkson’s works, without leaving aside the rest of the world. The book is divided in four main sections that correspond to Clarkson’s scholarly contributions. The epilogue takes a personal tone and presents how the legacy of Stephen Clarkson serves as an inspiration for scholars facing a different world.
