Book excerpt: Find Your Fit: A Guide Through The College Athletics Recruiting Process was written by Augie Heath while he was still in college playing football on full scholarship for Sacramento State. Augie wrote Find Your Fit to serve as the book he wishes he had after going through the recruiting process himself twice (once as a high school recruit, and later as a junior college student-athlete). In Find Your Fit, Augie writes about how he put himself in a position to earn a full Division I athletic scholarship, what it is like to go through the college athletics recruiting process, how he would guide current student-athletes through their own athletic recruitment, as well as what it is really like to be a Division I student-athlete. During his recruitment, Augie received scholarship offers from Division I-FCS, Division II, and Division III schools. He received Preferred Walk-On offers from multiple Division I-FBS universities, took multiple official visits, negotiated scholarship amounts face-to-face with multiple college coaches, and ultimately fulfilled his dream of playing Division I football on a full ride scholarship. Find Your Fit is different than any other recruiting guide out there in the respect that it was written by a college student-athlete who actually went through the recruiting process. Augie writes about his own athletic recruitment, what he did right, what he did wrong, and the mind games he saw coaches play with recruits and walk-on teammates. In the book, you will see that Augie gives clear thoughts on how to get noticed by college coaches, the most effective things you can do to take control of your own recruitment, how to find the school that is the right fit for you, and how to put yourself in position to get the most scholarship money possible. Getting a sports scholarship is a realistic and achievable goal. Find Your Fit is an easy read that makes sense and helps you take the right steps towards getting your college education paid for!

Book excerpt: "One of the most insightful books ever written about college football." —The New York Times Now revised and updated by the author, MEAT MARKET proves that in college football, the game off the field is more brutal than the one on the field. In this shattering expose, Bruce Feldman goes into the war rooms to show who stands to profit when champions get built, and at what cost. A college football program can become a multi-million dollar industry for its school, but only if that program wins. The quest for excellence goes beyond the guts and the glory of the gridiron—it goes into the war rooms where recruiters size up every metric to determine which high-school phenom they want to recruit to the university. Bruce Feldman—FOX Sports College Football Insider—rips the cover off the game’s frenzied pursuit of raw talent, taking you deep inside the SEC war room of recruiting legend Ed Orgeron, the combustible Cajun who helped build national championship teams at the University of Miami and at USC. In a stunning, blow-by-blow account of the year leading up to National Signing Day 2007, the award-winning journalist shadows Orgeron and his Ole Miss assistants as they set about hunting high school students, pleading, plotting, and inventing ways to lure them to their sleepy Oxford campus. Packed with candid confessions and outrageous off-the-field action, Meat Market makes what happens on the field seem almost tame by comparison. MEAT MARKET is a must-read for all college football fans, an eye-opening discovery of what it takes to put their favorite team on the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College athletics are now at their most popular and most competitive levels due to ever-growing numbers of reputable athletic programs and talented student athletes. The recruiting process, however, can be a nightmare not only because there are a multitude of steps required to complete the process but also because of the inconvenient time in which the process takes place: those busy high school years. Getting Recruited: A Strategic Look into the Collegiate Athletic Recruitment Process aims to make sense of the recruiting process as well as to help athletes maximize their chances of being recruited to the college of their choice. It is an informal yet thorough guide that covers important concepts ranging from timing strategies to communication with coaches, and is relevant to all recruited sports in American colleges and universities. An alumnus of Choate Rosemary Hall Preparatory High School and a graduate of Middlebury College, Jeff Ferraro was a regionally and nationally-recognized soccer defender who was decorated with multiple All-State and All-WNEPSSA honors in high school. He went through the recruiting process for Division 1 and 3 universities, including schools in the Ivy League, NESCAC, ACC, and Patriot League. Through his recruiting experiences during one of the most competitive recruiting years in history, Jeff saw firsthand how cutthroat the process can be and learned the ins and outs of what it takes to have a successful recruiting experience, regardless of what high school you come from or what sport you play.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have been written on the evils of commercialism in college sport, and the hypocrisy of payments to athletes from alumni and other sources outside the university. Almost no attention, however, has been given to the way that the National Collegiate Athletic Association has embraced professionalism through its athletic scholarship policy. Because of this gap in the historical record, the NCAA is often cast as an embattled defender of amateurism, rather than as the architect of a nationwide money-laundering scheme. Sack and Staurowsky show that the NCAA formally abandoned amateurism in the 1950s and passed rules in subsequent years that literally transformed scholarship athletes into university employees. In addition, by purposefully fashioning an amateur mythology to mask the reality of this employer-employee relationship, the NCAA has done a disservice to student-athletes and to higher education. A major subtheme is that women, such as those who created the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW), opposed this hypocrisy, but lacked the power to sustain an alternative model. After tracing the evolution of college athletes into professional entertainers, and the harmful effects it has caused, the authors propose an alternative approach that places college sport on a firm educational foundation and defend the rights of both male and female college athletes. This is a provocative analysis for anyone interested in college sports in America and its subversion of traditional educational and amateur principles.
