Book excerpt: More than 600 years ago, John Wycliffe was the first to set aside Latin as the language of the Scriptures and to reach the English people in their own tongue. Working from contemporary manuscripts of the Latin Vulgate, he sought "no strange English" but only the easiest, most common-albeit the most Latin-like-language possible. His work was used by the Lollards, a group of itinerant preachers ("poor priests") who went about preaching, reading, and teaching from the English Bible. Following Wycliffe's lead, we are once again bringing the first translation of the English Bible to life in this modern adaptation of his original work. This years-long endeavor is the outcome of painstaking care in translating and editing the original Middle English text, making every effort to honor his original efforts while bearing a responsibility to the very Word of God. The result is an academic, yet readable, edition of the New Testament in Modern English that all book- and Bible-lovers are sure to appreciate and enjoy!

Book excerpt: In making this edition of Wycliffe's monumental work the Publisher has had to make a number of decisions that affect the final outcome of the work. Some of these decisions may be welcomed by the reading public and some perhaps not. All of the decisions were made with the reader in mind. Our intention was to produce an edition of Wycliffe's Bible translation that was reasonably priced and to do this it must be in one volume. This has meant choosing a large paper format. Other smaller sized editions are over 800 pages. We chose a larger paper size that results in around 250 pages less. We chose a font that is recognized as easily readable at smaller sizes. Adobe Garamond, 10 pt. was selected. We have tested it and have not found it to be an uncomfortable reading size. If you have reasonable eyesight, you will not need a magnifying glass, as has been reportedly needed for other modern reprints. We hope you like it. Some will complain that we have not inserted indents and paragraphing. Again, this is a massive volume and we have tried to produce a book that is within one volume so that it is commercially viable for us and you the reader. It has also meant not including any of the introductions by Wycliffe, Jerome and others, or notes that were a part of the original. Hence the subtitle "Text Edition". We understand this will not be to everyone's liking, but we are limited, by the printer, to how many pages our books can be. At the size we chose we are almost at capacity. At a smaller size we could have done over 800 pages, but we still would have had to cram the same amount of text in. So the problem would be the same. The only way around this problem would have been to produce two large volumes and at this time we do question the viability of such an undertaking. However, if it is clear that there is a great demand for it, we may bring out a new two volume edition with that additional text. This may also enable us to insert indents and paragraphing. This work was first produced in the late Middle Ages. The language is therefore extremely archaic. So much so that some of the letters have evolved and changed since then. This edition contains all modern letters, but does not contain modern spelling. It is therefore, not a "Modern Edition" in this sense. The yogh for example has been replaced as necessary. Purists will complain, but we hope for the average reader this will not present much of a problem. It will hopefully give the reader a text as close to the original yet still possible to be read and, with a little work, understood.
Book Synopsis The Holy Bible - Vol. 5 - The New Testament by : John Wycliffe

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late Fourteenth Century, John Wycliffe and his followers, at great peril to themselves, became the first to translate the complete text of the Bible into English. This "Beggars Bible" became a key event in the subsequent Protestant movement because it allowed, not just Books of Hours and other fragments of the Biblical text, but the entire Bible to be placed into the hands of the common people for the first time. Now persons other than clergy could study the entire scriptures first hand. Unavailable since the late 1800s, this text-only edition of The New Testament is based upon the extremely rare first complete printing of the John Wycliffe Middle English translation of The Holy Bible (Oxford: University Press, 1850). This Volume contains all the Books of the recognized New Testament Canon and includes the rare Apocryphal Letter of St. Paul to the Laodiceans. While Middle English spelling of words has been retained, alphabetic and runic symbols which are no longer in current usage have been replaced by their modern equivalents. This gives the modern reader the opportunity to experience the vigorous and idiomatic language of the first great English-language Bible first-hand, and to discover the sense of wonder its first readers must have felt. Four companion volumes of The Old Testament are also currently available. EACH VOLUME IS NEWLY AND CAREFULLY EDITED WITH A COMPLETE RESETTING OF ALL TYPE. THESE EDITIONS ARE NOT FACSIMILES, PHOTOCOPIES OR HASTILY ASSEMBLED SCANS.
