Book excerpt: Exegesis from the year 2020 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, grade: 95, Nations University, language: English, abstract: The problem facing the modern student of the New Testament is that of application. One of the most difficult questions is how to understand the original intention of the New Testament for current human history when the material is two thousand years old. Most often students wonder whether all people are accountable to the teachings of the gospel, the New Testament in general. However, the New Testament possesses several evidences that some passages have specific application because their original audience and intended purposes are known. In this piece of work, we will highlight some ideas.

Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2020 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, grade: 95, Nations University, course: Critical Introduction to the New Testament, language: English, abstract: This paper discusses the application of the New Testament in contemporary life, with particular attention to how to distinguish the universal and limited or specific application of the texts, as well as to provide a solution that reiterates the meaning and the means of salvation. Christians often read the Bible a few verses or a single chapter at a time. As a result, they may overlook the context and draw unwarranted conclusions. The critic, on the other hand, looks for the inconsistencies that inevitably throws him on the track. In this paper, the problem of proving the continuity of the New Testament is approached in a way that ties it together by means of a theme or connectivity. Moreover, since the material is now two thousand years old, modern New Testament students are faced with the problem of application, especially how to understand the original intention behind the New Testament for current human history. However, Jews and Muslims, for their part, are challenged by the question of biblical authority, a problem that confuses many people but presents them with difficulties. In other words, the two overriding questions are what Christians mean by New and Old Testaments and the relationship between them. This problem is compounded by the fact that Jews do not accept the New Testament while Muslims accept both, in theory. However, the common Messianic theme of the two covenants ties them together, so that the evidence points to the meaning of New Testament continuity and integration.

Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2020 in the subject Theology - Biblical Theology, , language: English, abstract: This essay depicts the common problem to be facing the modern student of the New Testament, which is the conformity to the standard of the current world. To address this problem, the author of Roman 12 is pointing us, to the life of transformation as a specific application. The New Testament being a document, which has been in existence universally, contains this call for transformation in the renewed heart. We realized that the conformity and transformation do not exit together; one has to make a decision to transform in order to remain relevant in the renewed heart. To further maintain within the transformed mind, one has to respond to God by a way of confession, repentance and being baptized. This action will humble one to remain within the transformed life in the renewal of their mind.

Book excerpt: While it is true that today's civilization presents all sorts of questions about which the Bible had nothing to say directly, in many instances there are passages which, when properly understood, can lead us toward the right answer for modern Christians. And in many instances the Bible addresses itself explicitly to moral and spiritual concerns that are just as relevant today as they were thousands of years ago. But discerning the true intent of the scriptures is not as simple as many people have tried to make it. There are seeming (and sometimes actual) contradictions to be reconciled, there is the cloud of historical context to be clarified, the inaccuracies of translators, the findings of modern biblical criticism, research and archaeological discoveries to be considered. Expert guidance is indeed required. Father McKenzie tackles death, marriage, divorce, suffering, sexual morality, life after death, violence, love of neighbor, faith, the institutional church, prejudice and bigotry, prayer and personal holiness, the role of women in the church, priesthood and varieties of ministry, sin and radical evil. Chapters on these subjects are thought provoking, and readers will appreciate their journey through the scriptures with McKenzie as their perfect guide.

Book excerpt: The parable is the most well-known literary form presented in the gospels. And since narrative or story sermons are such a prominent element in the contemporary pulpit, pastors are preaching on the parable texts more frequently than ever. Richard Gribble thoroughly examines each of the parables appearing in Cycle C of the Revised Common Lectionary. Each analysis includes: - discussion of the theme - spiritual food for the journey - application of the parable to contemporary life - openings for preaching - points of challenge and questions to ponder - exegesis and explanation of the parable - context of the parable These studies will be a classic resource for preaching... or useful for Bible study and inspiration. The author of eight books and over 100 articles, Richard Gribble, CSC, is the acting superior at Moreau Seminary at the University of Notre Dame. Father Gribble earned his Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America and has also earned degrees from the United States Naval Academy, the University of Southern California, and the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley.

Book excerpt: The Jefferson Bible, or The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth as it is formally titled, was a book constructed by Thomas Jefferson in the latter years of his life by cutting and pasting numerous sections from various Bibles as extractions of the doctrine of Jesus. Jefferson's composition excluded sections of the New Testament containing supernatural aspects as well as perceived misinterpretations he believed had been added by the Four Evangelists. In 1895, the Smithsonian Institution under the leadership of librarian Cyrus Adler purchased the original Jefferson Bible from Jefferson's great-granddaughter Carolina Randolph for $400. A conservation effort commencing in 2009, in partnership with the museum's Political History department, allowed for a public unveiling in an exhibit open from November 11, 2011, through May 28, 2012, at the National Museum of American History.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A leading expert in New Testament ethics discovers in the biblical witness a unified ethical vision -- centered in the themes of community, cross and new creation -- that has profound relevance in today's world. Richard Hays shows how the New Testament provides moral guidance on the most troubling ethical issues of our time, including violence, divorce, homosexuality and abortion. "Hays' passionately written book, with its bold agenda, has neither peer nor rival." --Leander E. Keck, Winkley Professor of Biblical Theology, Yale Divinity School "There are few people I would rather read for the actual exposition of the New Testament than Richard Hays. This book is filled with wonderful readings that not only inform us about how to think better about the so-called 'problem of the relation between the New Testament and ethics' but, even more, speak of how our lives should be lived in the light of Christ's cross. -Stanley Hauerwas, Gilbert T. Rowe Professor of Theological Studies, Duke University Divinity School "Richard Hays has succeeded brilliantly in bringing New Testament studies, contemporary theology, and ethics into a deeply reflective conversation... Hays' point is that the New Testament norms the Christian life, and, with the help of imagination and metaphor, can address the moral conflicts of our time." --Ellen T. Charry, Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University "This book isn't just a breath of fresh air. It's a hurricane, blowing away the fog of half-understood pseudo-morality and fashionable compromise, and revealing instead the early Christian vision of true humanness and genuine holiness. If this isn't a book for our time, I don't know what is." --N. T. Wright, author of The New Testament and the People of God

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A crucial responsibility for Christian interpreters of Scripture today, Richard Bauckham insists, is to seek to understand our contemporary context and to explore the Bible's relevance to it in ways that reflect serious critical engagement with that context. In The Bible in the Contemporary World Bauckham models how this task can be carried out. Bauckham calls for our reading of Scripture to lead us into increased engagement with the important issues of today's world, including globalization, environmental degradation, and widespread poverty. He works to bring biblical texts into relationship with these contemporary realities by means of the Bible's metanarrative of God and the world, in which God's purpose takes effect in the salvation and fulfilment of the world as his cherished creation.

Why do 80-90% of those making decisions for Christ fall away from the faith? For decades, the world's most popular gospel message has been drawing the lost by promising God's wonderful plan for their life. But behind the facade of the "wonderful plan" message is the reality of the trials, temptation, and persecution that Jesus promised. How can we reconcile the two? In this life-changing book, best-selling author Ray Comfort explores whether this common gospel approach aligns with real life--and with Scripture. The vital biblical principles he reveals will force you to reexamine your ideas about the gospel--and will teach you how to reach unbelievers the way God intended. A must-read for all who care about the lost. Over a quarter million copies in print!
