Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Public Health: The New Public Health and Tuberculosis To abolish any one race of disease germs is far easier than to destroy some much larger things. Thus to abolish flies means not only kill ing all flies, indoors in all houses everywhere. In all stables everywhere, in and around all dwell ings everywhere, but also throughout all fields and forests. Mountains and valleys everywhere. Because flies are hardy outdoor beings as well as indoor beings. They can breed and flourish al most anywhere. Where any kind of food, even in vanishing quantity, is to be had. Moreover, they can move of their own volition with promptness and despatch. Have quick eyes and quicker wings to escape designing enemies. And in a thousand ways can take care of themselves. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Health Nursing Revision at first seemed a simple matter, a question principally of amplification and correction. In proceeding, however, it became evident that something far more radical was necessary if true expression was to be given to modern trends of thought. Though eight years ago the public health nursing movement had emerged from its pioneer stage of development and was at a point where rapid growth was to be expected, the war, bringing as it did new knowledge of actual health conditions through the draft figures, and a new conception of the importance of national health, greatly accelerated the speed of normal growth and at the same time changed the emphasis on many points. It is this change of emphasis that has made a mere revision of the earlier book impossible, and has necessitated a complete rewriting. Mankind has gradually understood and recognised the importance of air, water, food, Shelter, and clothing, sufficient in quantity and pure in quality, and, in various ways, has made collective efforts to secure them. Out of these efforts have grown the mass of legislation, network of authorities, army of Officials, and the numerous and costly engineering works which to-day exist in all civilised States for the purpose of securing and maintaining the public health. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Public Health and Preventive Medicine Taking into consideration the main object of the volume, and in the endeavour to secure the utmost compression, it has been decided to exclude what would be a very lengthy bibliography, though the names of authorities are frequently quoted. N o attempt has been made to deal fully with laboratory work, but as some reference to it was absolutely necessary, the rationale of the various processes has in each instance been given, and, we believe, will be found useful by the student in the way of recalling his practical work and refreshing his memory. Our thanks are due to all those whose writings have aided us, and also to those who in other ways have rendered us assistance. We are specially indebted to Dr. Harvey Littlejohn for much kind advice, criticism, and the loan of literature on various branches. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bacteriology and the Public Health Though nominally a third edition of Bacteria in Relation to the Economy of Nature, Industrial Processes, and the Public Health, this is, speaking generally, a new book. Several new chapters have been added, and the whole has been enlarged and revised. The book is an attempt to set forth a simple general statement of our present knowledge of bacteria, especially as they are related to the public health. Theoretical and practical text-books of bacteriology abound, but as a rule they deal largely, and rightly so, with laboratory methods and technique. The general student of hygiene and the medical officer of health require, however, an elementary book in which, whilst ample laboratory facts are recorded, the subject is viewed broadly and particularly as it concerns the practical everyday problems of health and preventive medicine. This book is aimed to meet that requirement. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
