In ancient times every master of an art or artistic industry was accus temed to impart the secrets of his craft to a number of pupils, who in return gave him such help as they could, working upon his master pieces and learning by practice, under his super vision, his particular methods as well as the established traditions of the craft. In the Mid (lle Ages this system of teaching by apprentice ship was highly developed by the guilds, which controlled all the arts and trades, particularly in Florence and North Italy, in Germany, and Flanders, and to a considerable extent also in France and England. The governing councils of these guilds regulated the terms of apprentice ship and the course of instruction, prescribed the tests for promotion from one grade to another, and instituted prize competitions to stimulate proficiency. It was under this system that Florence attained that extraordinary primacy in the arts of design in the thirteenth century which she held until the close of the fourteenth. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New International Encyclopedia, Vol. 1 HE work which is now given to the public after years of diligent preparation is not a new T edition or revision of the International Cyclopedia. It is not based (ipon that or upon any other publication. The comparatively small portion of text which has been retained unaltered from the International Cyclopedia and incorporated in these volumes has been so retained because it has successfully stood the test of searching criticism, and because the Editors regard it as satisfying the most exacting requirements. This, however, is the full extent of the new Encyclopaedia's obligation to the Old. The present work has been planned and executed as a wholly independent and original undertaking. It represents the practical knowledge gained from an editorial experience of many years. It embodies the results derived from a critical study of all the most famous works of refer enee which have at any time appeared in Europe or in the United States. Under the 'old and Middle em pires (down to about 1900 the wars of Egypt were comparatively unimportant. During this period a sort of feudal system prevailed, and the main strength of the army was furnished by the militia of the nomes, commanded by the monarchs or their deputies, together with the contingents of the great temple estates and of the royal domains. In addition, a certain number of mercenary tr00ps were drawn from the tribes of northern Nubia. Under the twelfth dynasty, and perhaps earlier, there was also a permanent corps, the Retainers of the King, which seems to have filled the place of a standing army. No cavalry or chariot force existed, as the horse does not appear to have been introduced into Egypt until about 1600. On the uplan s there is a cover ing of bowlder clay in which coarse stony ma terisi, derived from ledges of granite and gneiss, is abundant. Even in districts remote from outcrops of granite and gneiss, the particles which compose the soil are generally coarse and sandy rather than fine and argillaceous, because of the prevalence of quartzose rocks instead of shales, slates, and limestones. In the valleys extensive flood plains or intervales of gravel and silt afi'ord fertile ground. Along the Mer rimac glacial river deposits, and along the Con necticut old lake floor silts of great depth and extent have been terraced by the modern rivers and are highly productive. Bakers - winding, steep-sided ridges of gravel which mark the beds of old glacial rivers - and kames of less definite form are common in the valleys. In the low southern part, particularly near the coast. Elliptical hills of bowlder clay known as drumlins are numerous. Machine-made iron chains are of two kinds, known as welded chains and weldless chains. In making welded chains by machine the rod of iron is first mm through a machine called a winder, which winds it round a mandrel and turns it out in the form of a long spiral spring. This rod is then cut by a machine so that each twist or spiral is severed from the next and the stock is in the form of rings whose Open ends only need to be welded together to form complete closed links. The welding is done by heating the ring and placing it in dies, which, under the blows of a trip hammer operated by the workman's foot, form it into shape and weld together the open ends.
