Book excerpt: Hardly any other scripture from the time of the Roman Empire of about two thousand years ago has stirred up so much excited attention as the "Germania" of Tacitus. Only from this ethnographic essay do we know the name Nerthus, a goddess who should have been venerated by seven smaller Germanic tribes. Much of what the "Germania" tells us is meanwhile highly doubted. The 1st century original no longer exists; the intact copies were on their part copied from older "Germania" texts, which were also just copies. The existing copies are not identical to each other. That causes many question marks, which also concern this goddess Nerthus. This book is an attempt to place some exclamation marks in front of that, and is sometimes deliberately provocative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three parts of the book are separated fields and deal with different facets of the runes. Part 1 gives, among other things, a fair summarizing historical overview, whereby corresponding finds and their possible interpretations are not left out. Part 2 offers many passages in related mythology and the Norse sagas where runes occur, the corresponding quotes are included. These two parts form an important foundation for the third part, which deals with the use of runes in modern magical-practical usage. After decades of study of various western streams and schools of magic and a thorough study of the runes, the author has managed to combine both. The result is a unique modern rune magic, which is presented in the third part of the book.

Book excerpt: The Goths-a rumored people first known by history around the river Vistula in present Poland-was the people that more than other contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire. It was however also the Goths who preserved the Roman culture against other Germanic tribes. Earlier it has been generally assumed the Goths originated in Scandinavia but during the 20th c. many scholars have grown skeptical. The author has, using both Classical and Nordic sources and supplementary sciences, made probable there is an intimate connection between the Goths and the Nordic countries. Consequently it is quite possible that at least part of the Goths have a Nordic origin. The book rests on the basic hypothesis that the Goths are not a people but a number of tribes and peoples united through a common religious/cultic origin. The old dispute concerning the relationship between Svear and Gautar also gets quite a new meaning. The book is interdisciplinary and embraces history, religion, arts, linguistics and archaeology. In 1999 Ingemar Nordgren received his Ph.D. at Odense University, Denmark The book builds to a considerable extent on his dissertation but has been updated and partly rewritten with brand new material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a history of the early European middle ages through the eyes of women, combining the rich literature of women's history with original research in the context of mainstream history and traditional chronology. The book begins at the end of the Roman empire and ends with the start of the long eleventh century, when women and men set out to test the old frontiers of Europe. The book recreates the lives of ordinary women but also tells personal stories of individuals. Each chapter also questions an assumption of medieval historiography, and uses the few documents produced by women themselves, along with archaeological evidence, art, and the written records of medieval men, to tell of women, their experiences and ideas, and their relations with men. It covers the continent and its exotic edges, such as Iceland, Ireland, and Iberia; looking at women Christian and non-Christian alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about how I see Asatru. It is my personal view and a story about how I do things. This is not meant as an Asatru textbook. In my opinion, such a textbook cannot be written at all. Asatru is very individual, and you must form your own opinions and attitudes and find out, what feels right to me, otherwise it will not work. I do not think that, in this faith, you can just take over someone elses opinions. But I love to give other people inspirations. Tell what I do and why. So they can chose how to do them self. Therefor I wrote my first book back in 2000. Both to be an inspiration, but also to tell people about what Asatru is. Two years ago I wrote this book which contains more rituals an experience than the first one. A lot of people do not know anything about Asatru and have a huge number of prejudices. In this book I try to take Asatru down to earth, so to say. Make it more common. And explain what it is for me.

Book excerpt: An exhilarating introduction to the vivid, violent, boisterous world of the Norse myths and their cultural legacy—from Tolkien to Game of Thrones The Norse Myths presents the infamous Viking gods, from the mighty Asyr, led by Ó?inn, and the mysterious Vanir, to Thor and the mythological cosmos they inhabit. Passages translated from Old Norse bring this legendary world to life, from the myths of creation to ragnarök, the prophesied end of the world at the hands of Loki’s army of monsters and giants, and everything that comes in between: the long and problematic relationship between the gods and the giants, the (mis)adventures of human heroes and heroines, with their family feuds, revenges, marriages, and murders; and the interaction between the gods and mortals. Photographs and drawings show a range of Norse sites, objects, and characters, from Viking ship burials to dragons on runestones. Dr. Carolyne Larrington describes the Norse myths’ origins in pre-Christian Scandinavia and Iceland, and their survival in archaeological artifacts and written sources, from Old Norse sagas and poems to the less-approving accounts of medieval Christian writers. She traces their influences into the work of Wagner, William Morris, and J. R. R. Tolkien, and even Game of Thrones in the resurrection of the Fimbulvetr, or “Mighty Winter."
