Since Reconstruction, the Sea Islands region, comprised of the North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia coastal areas, offered a geographical isolation that fostered songs with a cultural distinctiveness as part of the Gullah traditions. Saint Helena Island, one of the largest of the Sea Islands, has provided the most studied body of Negro spirituals over two main periods of active research: 1860-1917, when William Allen, Natalie Curtis Burlin, and Carl Diton made their collections; and 1922-1939, when The Society for the Preservation of Spirituals and the N.G.J. Ballanta-Taylor, Samuel Lawton, and Guy B. Johnson collections were assembled. Yet in recent times, with the exception of a few efforts by Sally Plair (1972) and William Dargan (2006), the songs from Saint Helena Island have been virtually ignored by scholars since Lawton published his study, and now the survival of these songs in the repertoire is in question since the performance tradition is becoming scattered. Although transcriptions may differ from the actual performance, the availability of multiple renderings of many of the island's spirituals makes it possible to identify and examine important changes to the melodic, rhythmic, and textual makeup in the island's songs. In addition, transcriptions from both archival and fieldwork recordings have been compared to written sources to develop a clearer understanding of song retentions and alterations throughout the three targeted periods of concentration. In the first part of this study, I provide an analysis of the educational, social, and economic factors influencing the Saint Helena Island spirituals. Following a review of previous research conducted on the island's songs in Chapter 1, Chapter 2 begins with a discussion of the Penn School's educational and musical curricula that affected the use of Gullah in song texts and the singing of shouting songs. In Chapter 3, I concentrate on the Penn School's outreach efforts, such as the Saint Helena Quartet, house blessings, and the Community Sings that broadened the school's musical influence on the island. In Chapter 4, I examine the contrafacta and musical alterations made to the Saint Helena Island songs during the World Wars and Prohibition. In these periods, the island's songs gained national attention because of their effectiveness as patriotic songs, but they also offered social commentary to those islanders selling illegal alcohol. Chapter 5 opens the second part of this study with a musicological analysis of the Saint Helena Island spirituals extant from 1860-1917. I identify eighteen spirituals from the original Slave Songs of the United States collection and show resultant alterations and retentions that have occurred. In Chapter 6, I focus on 1922-1939, the most active period of scholarship on the island. I present a comparative analysis of transcriptions by Carl Diton and N.G.J. Ballanta-Taylor--the earliest collections--and include later contributions made by The Society for the Preservation of Spirituals, Guy Johnson, and Samuel Lawton. Finally, Chapter 7 concludes the second half with an analysis of the spirituals existing from 1972 to the present. Recordings, both from the Southern Historical Society at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and my own fieldwork, are used throughout this chapter.

Book excerpt: In Gullah Spirituals musicologist Eric Crawford traces Gullah Geechee songs from their beginnings in West Africa to their height as songs for social change and Black identity in the twentieth century American South. While much has been done to study, preserve, and interpret Gullah culture in the lowcountry and sea islands of South Carolina and Georgia, some traditions like the shouting and rowing songs have been all but forgotten. This work, which focuses primarily on South Carolina's St. Helena Island, illuminates the remarkable history, survival, and influence of spirituals since the earliest recordings in the 1860s. Grounded in an oral tradition with a dynamic and evolving character, spirituals proved equally adaptable for use during social and political unrest and in unlikely circumstances. Most notably, the island's songs were used at the turn of the century to help rally support for the United States' involvement in World War I and to calm racial tensions between black and white soldiers. In the 1960s, civil rights activists adopted spirituals as freedom songs, though many were unaware of their connection to the island. Gullah Spirituals uses fieldwork, personal recordings, and oral interviews to build upon earlier studies and includes an appendix with more than fifty transcriptions of St. Helena spirituals, many no longer performed and more than half derived from Crawford's own transcriptions. Through this work, Crawford hopes to restore the cultural memory lost to time while tracing the long arc and historical significance of the St. Helena spirituals.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spirituals originated among enslaved Africans in America during the colonial era. They resonate throughout African American history from that time to the civil rights movement, from the cotton fields to the concert stage, and influenced everything from gospel music to blues and rap. They have offered solace in times of suffering, served as clandestine signals on the Underground Railroad, and been a source of celebration and religious inspiration. Spirituals are born from the womb of African American experience, yet they transcend national, disciplinary, and linguistic boundaries as they connect music, theology, literature and poetry, history, society, and education. In doing so, they reach every aspect of human experience. To make sense of the immense impact spirituals have made on music, culture, and society, this bibliography cites writings from a multidisciplinary perspective. This annotated bibliography documents articles, books, and dissertations published since 1902. Of those, 150 are books; 80 are chapters within books; 615 are journal articles, and 150 are dissertations, along with a selection of highly significant items published before 1920. The most recent publications included date from early 2014. Disciplines researched include music, literature and poetry, American history, religion, and African American Studies. Items included in the annotated bibliography are limited to English-language sources that were published in the United States and focus on African American spirituals in the United States, but there are a few select citations that focus on spirituals outside of the United States. Of the one thousand annotations, they are divided, roughly evenly, between: general studies and geographical studies; information about early spirituals; use of spirituals in art music, church music, and popular music; composers who based music on spirituals; performers of spirituals (ensembles and individuals); Bible, theology, and religious education; literature and poetry; pedagogical considerations, including the teaching of spirituals as well as prominent educators; reference works and a list of resources that were unavailable for review but are potentially useful. This book also offers considerable depth on particular topics such as the Fisk Jubilee Singers and William Grant Still with over thirty citations devoted to each. At the same time, materials included are quite diverse, with topics such as spirituals in Zora Neale Hurston’s novels; bible studies based on spirituals; enriching the teaching of geography through spirituals; Marian Anderson’s historic concert at the Lincoln Memorial; spiritual roots of rap; teaching dialect to singers; expressing African American religion in spirituals; Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s music; slave tradition of singing among the Gullah. The book contains indices by author, subject, and spiritual title. Additionally, an appendix of spirituals by biblical reference, listing both spiritual title to scriptural reference as well as scripture to spiritual title is included. T. L. Collins, Christian educator, compiled the appendix.

This book was released on 2005-11-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Gullah people are one of our most distinctive cultural groups. Isolated off the South Carolina-Georgia coast for nearly three centuries, the native black population of the Sea Islands has developed a vibrant way of life that remains, in many ways, as African as it is American. This landmark volume tells a multifaceted story of this venerable society, emphasizing its roots in Africa, its unique imprint on America, and current threats to its survival. With a keen sense of the limits to establishing origins and tracing adaptations, William S. Pollitzer discusses such aspects of Gullah history and culture as language, religion, family and social relationships, music, folklore, trades and skills, and arts and crafts. Readers will learn of the indigo- and rice-growing skills that slaves taught to their masters, the echoes of an African past that are woven into baskets and stitched into quilts, the forms and phrasings that identify Gullah speech, and much more. Pollitzer also presents a wealth of data on blood composition, bone structure, disease, and other biological factors. This research not only underscores ongoing health challenges to the Gullah people but also helps to highlight their complex ties to various African peoples. Drawing on fields from archaeology and anthropology to linguistics and medicine, The Gullah People and Their African Heritage celebrates a remarkable people and calls on us to help protect their irreplaceable culture.
