Book excerpt: The Battle for China’s Spirit is the first comprehensive analysis of its kind, focusing on seven major religious groups in China that together account for over 350 million believers: Chinese Buddhism, Taoism, Catholicism, Protestantism, Islam, Tibetan Buddhism, and Falun Gong. The study examines the evolution of the Communist Party’s policies of religious control, how they are applied differently to diverse faith communities, and how citizens are responding to these policies. The study—which draws on hundreds of official documents and interviews with religious leaders, lay believers, and scholars—finds that Chinese government controls over religion have intensified since November 2012, seeping into new areas of daily life. Yet millions of religious believers defy official restrictions or engage in some form of direct protest, at times scoring significant victories. The report explores how these dynamics affect China’s overall social, political, and economic environment, while offering recommendations to both the Chinese government and international actors for how to increase the space for peaceful religious practice in a country where spirituality has been deeply embedded in its culture for millennia.

Book excerpt: Most twentieth-century Americans fail to appreciate the power of Christian conversion that characterized the eighteenth-century revivals, especially the Great Awakening of the 1740s. The common disdain in this secular age for impassioned religious emotion and language is merely symptomatic of the shift in values that has shunted revivals to the sidelines. The very magnitude of the previous revivals is one indication of their importance. Between 1740 and 1745 literally thousands were converted. From New England to the southern colonies, people of all ages and all ranks of society underwent the New Birth. Virtually every New England congregation was touched. It is safe to say that most of the colonists in the 1740s, if not converted themselves, knew someone who was, or at least heard revival preaching. The Awakening was a critical event in the intellectual and ecclesiastical life of the colonies. The colonists' view of the world placed much importance on conversion. Particularly, Calvinist theology viewed the bestowal of divine grace as the most crucial occurrence in human life. Besides assuring admission to God's presence in the hereafter, divine grace prepared a person for a fullness of life on earth. In the 1740s the colonists, in overwhelming numbers, laid claim to the divine power which their theology offered them. Many experienced the moral transformatoin as promised. In the Awakening the clergy's pleas of half a century came to dramatic fulfillment. Not everyone agreed that God was working in the Awakening. Many believed preachers to be demagogues, stirring up animal spirits. The revival was looked on as an emotional orgy that needlessly disturbed the churches and frustrated the true work of God. But from 1740 to 1745 no other subject received more attention in books and pamphlets. Through the stirring rhetoric of the sermons, theological treatises, and correspondence presented in this collection, readers can vicariously participate in the ecstasy as well as in the rage generated by America's first national revival.

Book excerpt: This book provides a fresh, in-depth examination of the Revival of 1857-58, a widespread religious awakening most famous for urban prayer meetings in major metropolitan centers across the United States. Often mentioned in religious history texts and articles but overshadowed by scholarly attention to the first and second "Great Awakenings," the revival has lacked a critical, book-length analysis. This study will help to fill this gap and to place the event within the context of Protestant revival traditions in America. The Revival of 1857-58 was a multifaceted religious movement that Long suggests may have been the closest thing to a truly national revival in American history. The awakening marked the coming together of formalist and populist evangelical groups, particularly in urban areas, and helped to create the beginnings of a transdenominational religious identity among middle-class American evangelicals. Long explores the revival from various angles, emphasizing the importance of historiography and examining the way Calvinist clergy and the editors of the daily press canonized particular versions of the revival story, most notably its role in the history of great awakenings and its character as a masculine "businessmen's revival." She gives attention to grassroots perspectives on the awakening and also pursues wider social and cultural questions, including whether the revival actually affected evangelical involvement in social reform. The book combines insights from contemporary scholarship concerning revivals, women's history, and nineteenth-century mass print with extensive primary source research. The result is a clearly written study that blends careful description with nuanced analysis.

Book excerpt: Joseph Tracy (1793-1874) was an American Congregationalist minister. His careful research draws together all the available contemporary sources to give a fascinating insight into the events surrounding the awakening that took place throughout New England in the eighteenth century. The immense roles played by Jonathan Edwards and George Whitefield are inevitably prominent, but all the other characters and the parts they played are also featured. It is estimated that between twenty-five and fifty thousand were converted during this period, from the local revivals in the 1730’s through the more extensive and widespread blessing of the early 1740’s and beyond. Tracy does not shirk the need to examine the aberrations and excesses that marked the revival in some parts, nor the controversies that raged between the friends and foes of the revival. From these, important lessons may be learned even now by all those looking for significant blessing on their ministries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the successful campaigns for national liberation in the years following World War II were initially based on democratic and secular ideals. Once established, however, the newly independent nations had to deal with entirely unexpected religious fierceness. Michael Walzer, one of America’s foremost political thinkers, examines this perplexing trend by studying India, Israel, and Algeria, three nations whose founding principles and institutions have been sharply attacked by three completely different groups of religious revivalists: Hindu militants, ultra-Orthodox Jews and messianic Zionists, and Islamic radicals. In his provocative, well-reasoned discussion, Walzer asks why these secular democratic movements have failed to sustain their hegemony: Why have they been unable to reproduce their political culture beyond one or two generations? In a postscript, he compares the difficulties of contemporary secularism to the successful establishment of secular politics in the early American republic—thereby making an argument for American exceptionalism but gravely noting that we may be less exceptional today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True Revival Begins With True Repentance. On Feb. 29th, 1892, in Church of the Holy Trinity v. United States, the US Supreme Court declared: "...this is a Christian nation." The USA was never founded as nor envisioned by its founders to be a theocracy run by any particular church or sect of Christianity. But, as The Court stated in rendering its decision, this nation was nonetheless founded on Christian principles for a people who by-and-large worshiped or at least lived by the precepts of JESUS.In the years which followed that decision, and with ever increasing ferocity, We The People have left our GOD and gone a-whoring after other gods. In Jeremiah 7:15-18, GOD lets it be known that He has finally had it with His People of that day and tells Jeremiah to stop praying for them...that He will no linger even hear any prayers offered up for them. As at least part of GOD's People of today...have we in The Christian Church in America also crossed that line GOD showed to Jeremiah? If we have...then this fire that is the United States is going to go out. We once were a bright beacon of hope to a lost and dying world. To our disgrace and disdain by many who may now be more righteous than we, these past few years have seen our exports to the world shift from hope to sin. But, it would appear that GOD is allowing us one more chance. As JESUS through the Apostle John told the church at Ephesus in Revelation 2...so He is telling us...His Church in America: "Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place."Notice that the fire on these covers is from above. My fellow Christian, will YOU strive to catch it before it's too late?

It is in the spirit of this call that the National Revival Network of Mission America, along with input from nearly 100 national Christian leaders, has drafted this appeal. What is the "urgent appeal"? It is a call for church leaders to agree on what true revival is, why they need it, and how we as bodies of believers can begin seeking it together.

Book excerpt: The provocative and authoritative history of the origins of Christian America in the New Deal era We're often told that the United States is, was, and always has been a Christian nation. But in One Nation Under God, historian Kevin M. Kruse reveals that the belief that America is fundamentally and formally Christian originated in the 1930s. To fight the "slavery" of FDR's New Deal, businessmen enlisted religious activists in a campaign for "freedom under God" that culminated in the election of their ally Dwight Eisenhower in 1952. The new president revolutionized the role of religion in American politics. He inaugurated new traditions like the National Prayer Breakfast, as Congress added the phrase "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance and made "In God We Trust" the country's first official motto. Church membership soon soared to an all-time high of 69 percent. Americans across the religious and political spectrum agreed that their country was "one nation under God." Provocative and authoritative, One Nation Under God reveals how an unholy alliance of money, religion, and politics created a false origin story that continues to define and divide American politics to this day.

Book excerpt: The call for revival has been heard across America for several years now. Truly, this is the time we need to see God move in our land. True believers in Christ need to understand what revival is and what is necessary to see it happen. The Bible has much to say about it, and gives us examples to help us know what it entails, as well as the powerful results that bring glory to God. Although revival is desperately needed, few believers today have ever seen it in their church or neighborhood. It is not too late ¿ but is getting close to it. In this book, Evangelist Michael Valles not only gives a fresh call to revival, but also reveals what steps must be taken to bring it about. Some of the topics covered in this book include: ¿The Urgent Need for Real Revival ¿America¿s Desperate Need for Revival! ¿Revivals in America ¿Hindrances to a Holy Ghost Revival ¿(Three Steps on) How to Get Revived ¿The Key to a Future Strong America ¿The Great Blessings That Revival May Bring ¿Can We Expect a National Revival Today? ¿And more - 15 chapters in all. The author emphasizes that we must have revival if we are to have a powerful and lasting impact on our homes, neighborhoods, churches and nation. It is time to stop playing religious games and get serious with God! He also believes that as long as II Chronicles 7:14 is in the Bible, that there may be revival here in these last days. It only takes Christians willing to meet the conditions. Are you willing to meet the challenge?
