Book excerpt: Unlike regimented football or stats-happy baseball, The National Basketball Association is above all else a league of characters. Over the course of a season, games are, of course, won or lost, but for millions of devoted fans, the final result is almost incidental to the way the league's best players perform on - and off - the court. This book is the indispensible companion to today's game - a roundball Rosetta Stone that hilariously decodes the trends and tendencies of this enormously popular game. The NBA of the moment is a league of hugely charismatic celebrities, crackling aesthetic intrigue, socio-political undercurrents, and raw humanity: every Kobe Bryant pump-fake or LeBron James dunk symbolizes the changing landscape of professional sports and holds within it a Shaq-sized load of meaning. Fans who know the sport recognize how much more there is to basketball than, well, basketball. The Macro-Phenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac is a brilliantly illustrated guide to this tumultuous and exciting landscape. It explains what each player--from Tim Duncan and Gilbert Arenas to Amare Stoudemire and Lamar Odom--reveals, through their play and conduct, about who they are and, more importantly, who the fans want them to be. Like the game it celebrates, The Macro-Phenomenal Pro Basketball Almanac is simultaneously authentic and cerebral, funny and accessible, wholly original, and always entertaining.

Book excerpt: Updated June 11th and includes analysis of the Julio Jones Trade! Have you noticed most 2021 Fantasy Football Magazines and Fantasy Football Books tend to recycle the same information, the same sleepers and the same tiers? This is because they're all using the same information: last year's stats! Last year's stats won't tell you how Justin Herbert will acclimate to his new offense or what new head coach Arthur Smith or the trade of Julio Jones will impact the Falcons offense. A few years ago, I was like everyone else. I scoured the Internet and Fantasy Football publications searching for any advantage. I found myself reading 10-15 different books that all wound up telling me the same thing. Making things worse - they were telling all of my competition as well. That's when "sleeper" picks become overhyped and over drafted. To avoid draft day misses, I knew I had to dig into the data. I knew I had to watch film and after a while, I came to realize Fantasy Football success comes from knowing the offensive schemes and how a player's talents will be used in an offense. This is why (as my Fantasy Football Book predicted) Josh Allen flourished last year. Think about this. If all my Fantasy Football Almanac and Draft Guide did was tell you about one sleeper who is so far forgotten you could draft him and start him in the last round, would it be worth it? My readers who picked up J.K. Dobbins and Antonio Gibson in the middle rounds last year certainly think so. Or if all this Fantasy Football Almanac and Draft Guide did was keep you from using your draft day picks on season-long busts? This is more than a fantasy football magazine. It's a fantasy football scouting agency. We blend next-gen sports analytics with good old fashion film study. I literally watch every single preseason game in order to properly calibrate this guide's rankings throughout the offseason. That's right, The Fantasy Football Almanac and Draft Guide comes with FREE updates. You don't have to pay $5 a month to access them. If you buy the book, we have you covered. Included Within: 300 detailed player writeups with three year statistical progression included Instructions on how to interact with Sean throughout the offseason Over half of the league has a new head coach or offensive coordinator. How does this impact fantasy potential? Sean's shares insights based on film study and statistical analysis to project the impact of new offensive schemes. We've updated our algorithms to include play calling tendency of coaching staffs Other guides use historical data to project their totals. The Fantasy Football Almanac and Draft Guide is the only fantasy football magazine that utilizes scouting for future rankings. Our draft strategy is primed to maximize the value of every draft pick. Defense and Kicker analysis has been completed to identify competitive advantage at these positions, which are commonly ignored We've completed an easy to follow draft guide with useful tips for fantasy football rookies and fantasy football experts alike Overall player "tiers" definition (which is more useful for draft strategy when playing in leagues with multiple team counts) Expanded sleeper list that is rooted in scouting, coaching analysis and analytics. You won't find these players in other guides! Risky players list, which identifies popular players that carry risk, are over-drafted based on our analysis and/or carry significant bust potential Fantasy Rankings for different league types: PPR, Non-PPR, 1⁄2 PPR, Superflex, Dynasty We track 2021 offseason movement, coaching changes and draft selections

Book excerpt: Along with the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, both of which have been the subject of “50 Greatest” treatments by Bob Cohen, the Boston Celtics is one of the most iconic professional basketball teams, representing a multi-state region rather than just a city or state. Some of the sport’s greatest played for the Celtics: Bill Russell in the 1950s, John Havlicek in the 70s, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Robert Parrish in the 80s, and recently Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, and Kevin Garnett. Sports historian Robert W. Cohen has chosen the best to ever wear the uniform, and he provides a short biographical profile, key stats, and details about each players exploits on the court.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how American sports, especially basketball, baseball and American football, have projected the US into the world, and brought the world into America. Taking a chronological approach it traces the development of American sports from the turn of the 20th century, highlighting how international forces such as immigration, geopolitics and war have influenced the trajectory of sport in the US, and thus the American experience. DuBois also considers the globalization of American sport and how this soft power shaped international relations throughout the American century. Addressing key questions about the role of sport in the rise of the United States, it frames themes that have come to define sports history; gender, race, economics and politics. It argues that while sport has not necessarily been a catalyst for change, it has often mirrored social issues, and sometimes served as an important tool of progress. Synthesizing major works alongside primary sources, the chapters study boxing, hockey, track and field and soccer alongside the 'big three' (basketball, baseball and American football) through a number of case studies to offer a novel interpretation of American sport history. Spanning early Native American sport, the export of baseball in the American empire, the role of basketball in the Cold War, the influence of immigrants and women in sports, and modern day sport culture, American Sport in International History asks what the role of sport has been and will be in a shifting international environment.

Book excerpt: The Michael Jordan era (1984-98) changed the home atmosphere of half-empty stands to SRO crowds, media hordes, downtown parades, Grant Park celebrations, and drama – perhaps too much drama before (and after!) MJ took a brief leave-of-absence. Led by coach Phil Jackson, it was Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, BJ Armstrong, Craig Hodges, John Paxson, Bill Cartwright, and Toni Kukoc who either joined him in the championship run or kept the team playoff-bound until he returned. The second 3-peat included Kukoc, former Detroit Pistons Bad Boy Dennis Rodman, Steve Kerr, and Luc Longley. The Bulls’ post-Jordan era brought 6 years of lean times, then back to the playoff hunt. Those who emerged and thrived were Elton Brand (2000 ROY), Ben Gordon (2005 6th Man), Andres Nocioni, Kirk Hinrich, Luol Deng, Joakim Noah (2014 Player of the Year), Derrick Rose (2008 ROY, 2011 MVP), Jimmy Butler, and current stars DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine, Nikola Vucevic, and Coby White. What you'll find inside... § End of the Year Standings, Home/Away records, and Best/Worst records vs. opponents. § Club & League news: rule changes, trends, trades, suspensions, and noteworthy games § Stat leaders: Top Scoring, Rebounding, Assists, Blocks, 3-point percentage, and FT percentage § Year End Awards include Hall of Fame inductees, First Team Offense & Defense, and Finals outcome

Book excerpt: The Knicks of the 1990s competed like champions but fell short of their goal. An eclectic group who took divergent, in many cases fascinating paths to New York, they forged an identity as a rugged, relentless squad. Led by a superstar center Patrick Ewing and two captivating coaches--Pat Riley and Jeff Van Gundy--they played David to the Chicago Bulls' Goliath. Despite not winning a championship, they were embraced as champions by New Yorkers and their rivalries with the Bulls, Indiana Pacers and Miami Heat defined NBA basketball for a decade. Drawing on original interviews with players, coaches and others, this narrative rediscovers the brilliance of the Knicks, Ewing and his colorful supporting cast--Charles Oakley, John Starks, Larry Johnson and Latrell Sprewell--in the glory days of Madison Square Garden.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1984, the Bulls were entering their 19th year as a franchise when they signed Michael Jeffrey Jordan to a contract. Lest anyone forget, the pre-Jordan Bulls sported some very good teams that included some very good players like Guy Rodgers, Bob Love, Chet Walker, Tom Boerwinkle, Jerry Sloan, Norm Van Lier, and Artis Gilmore. Their play brought winning seasons, plenty of loud excitement and hope at the Stadium, but alas none of those teams reached the Finals. By the time His Airness took the floor, the Bulls hadn't seen the playoffs in 3 years and the 1983-84 version lost twice as many games as they won. Jordan brought the team respect, but it took a total of 6 seasons, a coaching change, and a shrewd GM to make great draft choices and add role players for the club to hoist the hardware and raise the Bulls' first championship banner. This was the first of 6 (two three-peats). The heroes were many: Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, John Paxson, Bill Cartwright, Steve Kerr, Dennis Rodman, Ron Harper, and Toni Kukoc. And Jordan? The 5X NBA MVP was voted Finals MVP all 6 times. The tough times that followed included more coaching changes. But there were also some personal successes: two Bulls won Rookie of the Year honors (the second of the two was voted league MVP), another won a 6th Man Award (his rookie season), a fan-favorite from Duke made the 2011-12 All-Defense team, and a 7-foot center from Florida won the 2012-13 NBA Player of the Year. Yes, there were good times as well (think Bench Mob!). The current 2021-2022 Bulls, led by coach Billy Donovan, entered the playoffs with the addition of All NBA (2nd Team) forward DeMar DeRozan, Olympian Zach LeVine, center Nikola Vucevic, 3rd year guard Coby White, and rookie guard Ayu Dosunmu. This was truly DeRozan's year - tying NBA record first set by Larry Bird (1985) and breaking another set by Wilt Chamberlain in the 1960s. What's included? Year-by year Standings, Club news, draft choices, player trades, dozens of season games and all post-season summaries. For more context: there's League news, noteworthy league games, stat leaders, year-end award winners, and Finals outcomes.

Book excerpt: One of professional basketball's most iconic franchises, the Boston Celtics—along with the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, both of whom have been the subject of "50 Greatest" treatments by sports historian Robert W. Cohen—represent a multistate region rather than just a city or state. Many of the sport's very best have played for the Celtics, including Bill Russell, Bob Cousy, John Havlicek, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, and Paul Pierce. But who is the greatest of them all? In The 50 Greatest Players in Boston Celtics History, Cohen attempts to determine just that. Using as measuring sticks the degree to which these players impacted the fortunes of the team, the extent to which they added to the Celtics legacy, and the levels of statistical compilation and overall dominance they attained while wearing a Celtics uniform, this book ranks, from 1 to 50, the top 50 players in team history. Quotes from opposing players and former teammates are provided along the way, as are summaries of each player’s greatest season, most memorable performances, and most notable achievements.

Book excerpt: Front office executives have become high-profile commentators, movie and video game protagonists, and role models for a generation raised in the data-driven, financialized world of contemporary sports. Branden Buehler examines the media transformation of these once obscure management figures into esteemed experts and sporting idols. Moving from Moneyball and Football Manager to coverage of analytics gurus like Daryl Morey, Buehler shows how a fixation on managerial moves has taken hold across the entire sports media landscape. Buehler’s chapter-by-chapter look at specific media forms illustrates different facets of the managerial craze while analyzing the related effects on what fans see, hear, and play. Throughout, Buehler explores the unsettling implications of exalting the management class and its logics, in the process arguing that sports media’s managerial lionization serves as one of the clearest reflections of major material and ideological changes taking place across culture and society. Insightful and timely, Front Office Fantasies reveals how sports media moved the action from the field to the executive suite.
