Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commandant's Planning Guidance (CPG) provides the 38th Commandant's strategic direction for the Marine Corps and mirrors the function of the Secretary of Defense's Defense Planning Guidance (DPG). It serves as the authoritative document for Service-level planning and provides a common direction to the Marine Corps Total Force. It also serves as a road map describing where the Marine Corps is going and why; what the Marine Corps force development priorities are and are not; and, in some instances, how and when prescribed actions will be implemented. This CPG serves as my Commandant's Intent for the next four years. As Commandant Neller observed, "The Marine Corps is not organized, trained, equipped, or postured to meet the demands of the rapidly evolving future operating environment." I concur with his diagnosis. Significant change is required to ensure we are aligned with the 2018 National Defense Strategy (NDS) and DPG, and further, prepared to meet the demands of the Naval Fleet in executing current and emerging operational naval concepts. Effecting that change will be my top priority as your 38th Commandant. This CPG outlines my five priority focus areas: force design, warfighting, education and training, core values, and command and leadership. I will use these focal areas as logical lines of effort to frame my thinking, planning, and decision-making at Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC), as well as to communicate to our civilian leadership. This document explains how we will translate those focus areas into action with measurable outcomes. The institutional changes that follow this CPG will be based on a long-term view and singular focus on where we want the Marine Corps to be in the next 5-15 years, well beyond the tenure of any one Commandant, Presidential administration, or Congress. We cannot afford to retain outdated policies, doctrine, organizations, or force development strategies. The coming decade will be characterized by conflict, crisis, and rapid change - just as every decade preceding it. And despite our best efforts, history demonstrates that we will fail to accurately predict every conflict; will be surprised by an unforeseen crisis; and may be late to fully grasp the implications of rapid change around us. The Arab Spring, West African Ebola Outbreak, Scarborough Shoal standoff, Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine, and weaponization of social media are but a few recent examples illustrating the point. While we must accept an environment characterized by uncertainty, we cannot ignore strong signals of change nor be complacent when it comes to designing and preparing the force for the future. What is abundantly clear is that the future operating environment will place heavy demands on our Nation's Naval Services. Context and direction is clearly articulated in the NDS and DPG as well as testimony from our uniformed and civilian leadership. No further guidance is required; we are moving forward. The Marine Corps will be trained and equipped as a naval expeditionary force-in-readiness and prepared to operate inside actively contested maritime spaces in support of fleet operations. In crisis prevention and crisis response, the Fleet Marine Force - acting as an extension of the Fleet - will be first on the scene, first to help, first to contain a brewing crisis, and first to fight if required to do so. The Marine Corps will be the "force of choice" for the President, Secretary, and Combatant Commander - "a certain force for an uncertain world" as noted by Commandant Krulak. No matter what the crisis, our civilian leaders should always have one shared thought - Send in the Marines.

Versatile naval expeditionary forces are the nation's first responders, relied upon to influence the course of a crisis, control the early phases of hostilities, and set the conditions for decisive resolution. America's ability to protect its homeland, assure our friends and allies, and deter potential adversaries depends on maritime supremacy and credible projection of combat power. The transformation of naval forces is dedicated to greatly expanding the sovereign options available worldwide to the President across the full spectrum of warfare. The result of our transformation will be a Navy-Marine Corps Team providing sustainable, immediately employable U.S. combat power, ready to meet any challenge. The Roadmap describes the key naval concepts, capabilities, initiatives, processes and programs that will guide the transformation efforts of the Navy-Marine Corps Team.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Department of the Navy has enacted a broad range of forward looking programs, policies and organizational changes designed to keep the Navy and Marine Corps in step with rapidly changing national security challenges. The Navy's ability to successfully conduct a wide range of demanding, real-world operations over the last year has validated this approach, and the foundation on which it was based. The plan this year is to follow through on the changes already begun, making modest course corrections where practical and necessary. The goal is to maintain a balance in programs that will best provide for both the current and future readiness of America's Naval forces. The broad outlines of the program are well established: a commitment to a rightsized, recapitalized and ready force. These three themes- rightsizing, recapitalization and readiness- underpin this report. At the same time, The Navy and Marine Corps will remain focused on key continuing priorities, including people, appropriate technology, and efficiency.

CHOOSING A CAREER IS NOT A decision to be made casually. You could spend the rest of your life pursuing the goals you choose today. You owe it to yourself to gather as much information as you can about the career choices that interest you. Reading this report will get you off to a good start. A career is more than a succession of jobs. A career should come with a paycheck, but it should also come with deep personal satisfaction and the knowledge that your efforts are leading somewhere worth going. Feeling that you are contributing to something larger than yourself is an excellent motivator. The fact that you have chosen to read a report on careers in the United States Marine Corps says very clearly that you want a career that will definitely lead you to places worth going, and that you don't mind overcoming a few challenges to get there. Whether you commit to a long-term career or just stay in the service long enough to learn valuable skills and have an adventure or two, the Marine Corps may be the place for you. The smallest of the four military services (the smaller Coast Guard is the lead agency in the Department of Homeland Security and only falls under the Department of Defense in time of war), the Marine Corps has the most enviable reputation. The reputation is so unassailable that the Marine Corps is the only service never to have trouble gaining new recruits, even in time of war. To be a US Marine is to be part of one of the world's truly elite fighting forces. This reputation is fostered in part by the catchiest recruiting slogan ever used by a military service: "The Few. The Proud. The Marines." Created in the 1960s by advertising firm J. Walter Thompson, the slogan was conceived as a way to turn the relatively small size of the Corps into an asset. The slogan has proven to be so durable that Advertising Week, the largest and most prestigious annual gathering of advertising and media industry leaders in North America named it one of the top 100 advertising slogans of all time. There is much more to the Marines than a catchy recruiting slogan, however. Much more. Trained as assault troops, Marines specialize in a form of warfare known as amphibious assault. The word "marine," means "from the sea." What Marines have traditionally done in wartime is invade hostile territory from the sea. In the military, this is known as "kicking down doors" or "grabbing a bit of beach." It is a critical part of the continuum of warfare. Today's Marine Corps counts nearly 200,000 active-duty Marines and 40,000 reservists. Although the smallest of the US armed services, the Corps is still much larger than most of the rest of the world's fighting forces. Officially part of the Department of the Navy, the Corps functions as an independent service led by a commandant who serves on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Together, the Navy-Marine Corps Team can put more power in more places than any other force in history. Think you have what it takes to be a part of it?
