Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naturalists Library Nature which Paris could then present, his mind at ease, and occupied with his favourite pursuits, and he was conscious that he had won all honourably by his own exertions. His next desire was to show him self worthy of the confidence which had been re posed in him: he laboured incessantly to complete the collection of Comparative Anatomy, which he had commenced upon the basis of a few preparations and skeletons left by Bu 'on; while, at the same time, his lectures and demonstrations were already spread ing his fame as a teacher widely over Europe. It was in this same year of his appointment 9 that he so conspicuously shewed his intimate knowledge of comparative anatomy, in his memoir upon the Megalonix of Jefferson, which had been considered an immense carnivorous animal, the enemy of the Mastodon. Cuvier beautifully demonstrated the huge remains of this animal to belong to the family of the Sloths, pointing out their structure, and deducing his reasonings with a clearness which brought im mediate conviction, without leaving room for a doubt. This was among the first of those papers wherein he made use of the comparison of the recent with the fossil species, and which commenced a totally new era in our investigation of the structure of the world. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naturalist's Library: Ornithology William received the first rudiments of his education at a school in the village of Dudding stone, about a mile from his paternal residence, which was followed by a regular course of classical study at a grammar school, from whence he was taken, in 1752, at twelve years of age, and apprenticed on the lst of October, 1752, to Messrs Hamilton, Balfour, and Neil, printers in Edinburgh, for six years and a half; during which time he conducted himself with most exemplary diligence, and gave indication of superior intelligence; so that, two years before the expiration of his apprenticeship, his masters appointed him to the important em ployment of corrector of their press, with a weekly allowance of ten shillings. They also kindly permitted him to attend some of the classes of the University, an indulgence he appears to have turned to very good account. Although he appears to have travelled over a great part of Europe in the service of the state; to have visited Africa, and perhaps Egypt and Palestine, yet no record of these adventures has been preserved; and had it not been for the occasional notices that occur in his own writings, and especially the information respecting his private habits and li terary labours, contained in the Epistles of his ne phew and namesake, Pliny the Younger, posterity would have known nothing of the biography of this great historian of Nature, except the era in which he ourished, the works he produced, and the re markable circumstances attending his death. Of the different accounts of this illustrious author which we possess, the most ancient is that ascribed to Susto nius, - the most ample is given by Count Rezzonico. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Naturalist's Library, Vol. 7: Mammalia, Whales, &C It will occur to many of our Readers that the order of Mammalia, to which the present Volume of the Naturalist's Library is devoted, viz. the Cetacea or the ordinary or fish-like Whales, have some claims to a place in our series. It is true that these tribes have none of those rural charms which are connected with our flocks and herds; and still less can they attract the eye, as do the rich and golden hues which adorn the humming-bird and paint the wings of the butterfly; though it will be found that, even in this respect, they possess a richness and variety not generally supposed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naturalist's Library, Vol. 27: Mammalia; Monkeys Ir is' a remarkable circumstance, that among the many naturalists whose names at this period are re. Membered from the high reputation of their works, comparatively few, had their minds early directed by their parents or guardians to the study of this science. And by many, it was not commenced before a somewhat advanced age. The illustrious naturalist whom we have chosen for the subject of the present memoir, is an instance among many others and although he was fortunate in procuring an education of the most liberal kind, which embraced in its range polite literature and the sciences, and was extended by means of foreign travel and the companionship of polished minds, he had passed his thirtieth year before designing the plan of his extensive works on nature, and the first branches of the animal kingdom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naturalist's Library, Vol. 2: Entomology; Beetles John ray was born on the 29th November 1628, at a place named Black Notley, in Essex. Although the name of his family was Ray, he continued all the time he attended the university to write it Wray, a form in which it accordingly appears in the college registers, and in some of his earliest publi cations. This alteration was soon however aban doned, and he confesses himself to have adopted it inconsiderately, and contrary to the usage of his fore fathers. His parents were of humble condition, but they were enabled to provide for the liberal educa tion of their son. His early studies were pursued at the grammar school of Braintree, which was not far distant from the place of his birth. In his maturer years he used to lament that so much of his time had been spent there unprofitably, owing to the imperfect mode of education pursued - a complaint pretty generally applicable to such institutions at the period of which we speak. Our habitation'was about half a quarter of a league distant from his house at Hammarby, in a farm where we kept our own furniture and other requisites for housekeeping. He rose very early in summer, and mostly about four o'clock. At six he came to us because his house was then building, breakfasted with us, and gave lectures upon the na tural order of plants (ordines naturales plantaram), as long as he pleased, and generally till about ten o'clock. We then wandered about till twelve upon the adjacent rocks, the productions of which afforded us plenty of entertainment. In the afternoon we repaired to his garden, and in the evening we mostly played at the Swedish game of trissett, in company with his Spouse. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naturalist's Library, Vol. 31: Entomology; Foreign Butterflies France Was now occupied with the eventful struggle which commenced in 1756. His eldest brother had fallen in the siege of bergen-op-zoom; others of them were still in the army; and all his most cherished associations were connected with the pro fassion of arms. With so much to inspire an aver sion to seclusion and comparative inactivity, nothing could have induced him to remain at college but the authority of his father, who still enforced compliance with his wishes. That salutary restraint, however, having been removed by death, in 1760, no time was lost by young Lamarck in following his own inclinations. With nothing but a letter of recom mendation from a lady residing in the neighbourhood of his father, addressed to the colonel of a French regiment, he set out for the army, which was then in Germany. Lamarck's somewhat diminutive stature and boyish appearance, which made him lookyounger than he really was, were ill fitted to make amends for the want Of influential patronage. His reception was by no means flattering, but nothing could daunt the zeal of the young volunteer. He joined a com pany of grenadiers, and determined to trust to fortune and his own exertions for Obtaining that rank which individuals Of his birth and education commonly acquire by other means.
