Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naturalist, 1909: A Monthly Journal of Natural History for the North of England IF scarcity be the touchstone of our interest in any bird, then surely the Stone Curlew is the most interesting resident species in Yorkshire, the northern limit of its breeding range in Britain. Some 150 years ago, prior to the introduction of the present system of agriculture on the high wolds and waste lands of the county, when huge stretches of sandy warren and sheep-walk existed, the bird must have been as common as it still is in some parts of Norfolk and Suffolk, but at the present day it is almost extinct in our county. This change of conditions may be traced to the introduction of the turnip, by which alone the present rotation of crops became possible. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Zoologist, 1909, Vol. 13: A Monthly Journal of Natural History In conclusion, the thought must be driven home to all of us, by the perusal of a single volume of this publication, how much can and is still to be done in British Zoology alone. A com petent zoologist could devote his life's work to studying the animal life - ih all its phases - of his own garden; he could soon compile a list of names, but a complete knowledge of the life-histories of these species is known to few indeed, while the bionomics of the whole of the living creatures to be found on a half-acre patch may be safely said to be at present outside the mental recognition of any one naturalist.
