Book excerpt: "Islands have captured the imagination of scientists and the public for centuries - unique and rare environments, their isolation makes them natural laboratories for ecology and evolution. This authoritative, alphabetically arranged reference, featuring more than 200 succinct articles by leading scientists from around the world, provides broad coverage of all the island sciences. But what exactly is an island? The volume editors define it here as any discrete habitat isolated from other habitats by inhospitable surroundings. The Encyclopedia of Islands examines many such insular settings - oceanic and continental islands as well as places such as caves, mountaintops, and whale falls at the bottom of the ocean. This essential, one-stop resource, extensively illustrated with color photographs, clear maps, and graphics will introduce island science to a wide audience and spur further research on some of the planet's most fascinating habitats." --Book Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norfolk Island (South Pacific) has some of the world’s rarest plant species. Of the 182 native plant species, 43 are endemic; that is they occur naturally nowhere else, 47 are listed nationally under Australian law as extinct or threatened and 30 more are already extinct, threatened or rare on the island. This book provides information (with illustrations) on each of the native species and some of the most important introduced plants which grow wild on the island. It also contains a chapter on the cultural use of plants from 1856. The book has previously unpublished paintings by John Doody from 1792 and paintings by famous botanical artist Ferdinand Bauer from 1804 in addition to more than 400 photographs. 192 pages 170 x 227 mm, full colour, with references and index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oceanic islands offer biologists unparalleled opportunities to study evolutionary processes and ecological phenomena. However, human activity threatens to alter or destroy many of these fragile ecosystems, with recent estimates suggesting that nearly half of the world's insular endemics are threatened with extinction. Bringing together researchers from around the world, this book illustrates how modern research methods and new concepts have challenged accepted theories and changed our understanding of island flora. Particular attention is given to the impact of molecular studies and the insights that they provide into topics such as colonisation, radiation, diversification and hybridisation. Examples are drawn from around the world, including the Hawaiian archipelago, Galapagos Islands, Madagascar and the Macronesian region. Conservation issues are also highlighted, with coverage of alien species and the role of ex situ conservation providing valuable information that will aid the formulation of management strategies and genetic rescue programmes.

Book excerpt: An outstanding and spectacular example of the devastation which feral animals – pigs, goats and rabbits – can cause, and the ecological restoration which can be achieved with hard work and frequent risks. Access to this remote island was difficult and often dangerous and all materials had be unloaded from the boat onto slippery rocks, handled up the surrounding cliffs and back-packed across the island. Diverse eradication techniques, using swimming, rock-climbing and archery for inaccessible sites, removed the last of the feral grazers. Revegetation and faunal recovery have been remarkable. This small island is the only natural habitat of some of the world’s rarest plant species. One was unknown to science previously, another was believed extinct, while a third has only one genetic individual in the wild. The number of bird species on the island has doubled. This book describes the geological, natural and human history of the island, the pest eradication program, and the extraordinary environmental response. It was very favourably reviewed in the international journal Restoration Ecology in 2014. Prices are for PDF file version. Paperback version also available.

Book excerpt: On the evening of 26 August 2009, the last known pipistrelle emerges from its day-time shelter on Christmas Island. Scientists, desperate about its conservation, set up a maze of netting to try to catch it. It is a forlorn and futile exercise – even if captured, there is little future in just one bat. But the bat evades the trap easily, and continues foraging. It is not recorded again that night, and not at all the next night. The bat is never again recorded. The scientists search all nearby areas over the following nights. It has gone. There are no more bats. Its corpse is not, will never be, found. It is the silent, unobtrusive death of the last individual. It is extinction. This book is about that bat, about those scientists, about that island. But mostly it is an attempt to understand that extinction; an unusual extinction, because it was predicted, witnessed and its timing is precise. A Bat's End is a compelling forensic examination of the circumstances and players surrounding the extinction of the Christmas Island pipistrelle. A must-read for environmental scientists, policy-makers, and organisations and individuals with an interest in conservation.

Book excerpt: Australia is the custodian of a diverse range of continental and oceanic islands. From Heard and Macquarie in the sub-Antarctic, to temperate Lord Howe and Norfolk, to the tropical Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, Australia’s islands contain some of the nation’s most iconic fauna, flora and ecosystems. They are a refuge for over 35% of Australia’s threatened species and for many others declining on mainland Australia. They also have significant cultural value, especially for Indigenous communities, and economic value as centres for tourism. Australian Island Arks presents a compelling case for restoring and managing islands to conserve our natural heritage. With contributions from island practitioners, researchers and policy-makers, it reviews current island management practices and discusses the need and options for future conservation work. Chapters focus on the management of invasive species, threatened species recovery, conservation planning, Indigenous cultural values and partnerships, tourism enterprises, visitor management, and policy and legislature. Case studies show how island restoration and conservation approaches are working in Australia and what the emerging themes are for the future. Australian Island Arks will help island communities, managers, visitors and decision-makers to understand the current status of Australia’s islands, their management challenges, and the opportunities that exist to make best use of these iconic landscapes.
